This is true. You can read what I said and what we did about this in last month's Who's Hiring post: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=15602225

Clarification!

Right now we're based in PST (California) and have been considering remote folks within three time zones in either direction (so roughly North/South America). It's possible that could change in the future though, so do feel free to reach out if you'd like to be considered/contacted in the future if that happens!

Elation Health | Senior Software Engineers | SFO or Remote | Full Time

I want to post an apology. A few months ago our recruiting process was going well enough that we had a comment in our HN post from a candidate we'd passed on who was happy enough with the experience that they recommended us in the thread [1]. Last month, however we had the exact opposite experience. Two candidates commented about investing significant effort in the process, only to be ghosted [2].

I arrived at those comments too late to reply, so I'm using this month's post to apologize. I dug into what happened here and found that we did indeed drop the ball with a few candidates and failed to follow up. Certainly it wasn't our intent and doesn't reflect our values. We've audited the entire candidate pool and have reached out to anyone that fell through the cracks to properly close the loop. I personally apologize for your poor experiences and the criticism is well deserved.

I also want to thank the people who commented. I think posting that kind of feedback warning others is an excellent way to keep other members of the community informed, and hold each-other accountable. In this case we've overhauled and streamlined our processes so that we're confident this won't happen again in the future. So thank you for helping us do better, and I'm very sorry that this improvement came at the expense of your time.

We are hiring, positions are here: https://boards.greenhouse.io/elationhealth and more about what we do at https://elationhealth.com

As always, my contact info is in my profile and I'm happy to chat with anyone directly or answer any questions transparently in the comments (I'll monitor those today).

Elation Health | (Senior) Software Engineer | (REMOTE &) San Francisco, CA | Full Time

At Elation we make tools for physicians and their patients that improve the efficiency and fidelity of their relationship, and help to make the delivery of excellent, proactive healthcare possible.

We've got a number of roles available in engineering, product, design, sales, and customer experience. See them all here: https://www.elationhealth.com/careers/

Specifically I'm closely involved with trying to fill our engineering positions. Right now we've got a couple of development roles to fill. One is a senior role (4+ years) backend heavy with python experience, and ideally Django. This role can be filled in SF or we're open to REMOTE candidates, particularly those with experience working remotely. The other position is a front-end focused (but still full stack) role. 2-3 years of Javascript and some ReactJS, with some backend experience (any stack, some RDBMS/SQL). That role we're hiring for the SF team locally.

Stack is Python/Django/MySQL/ReactJS/Elasticsearch/Redis/AWS. Team culture is awesome. Engineering team is ~30% remote. High empathy, low ego. Lots of interactions with passionate users, and generally in the company of people who care a lot about the quality of the product experience.

Apply online or reach out to me directly if you have any questions or are curious! I'm always happy to chat with folks about healthcare, startups, whatever. Contact info's in profile.

Specifically I'm closely involved with trying to fill our engineering positions. We're looking for folks at a variety of experience levels interested in working on full-stack projects. For these roles we're looking for folks to join our SF team, but we do have a mix of remote and local devs and do open REMOTE positions fairly frequently -- so feel free to reach out if you're curious about those as well!

Specifically I'm closely involved with trying to fill our engineering positions. The EO frame is definitely one of my favorite technology purchases of the last few years, so this announcement makes me sad. I hope the space continues to grow though. My family gets a lot of value out of having one of these in our home...though we use it pretty differently than EO seemed to intend.. their model appeared pretty dependent on users having paid art subscriptions, which we never signed up for.

famousactress··on How Bad Are Zillow “Zestimates”?
I concur. Though I tend to find this attitude pretty ridiculous since the status-quo home valuation process is just as bullshit at the zillow strategy is.

Status Quo in my experience goes:

1. List your house (usually at slightly above whatever the realtor thinks it might sell at)

2. Someone's willing to buy at listing price +/- 5%

3. Bank sends an appraiser whose job it is to figure out what a house is worth (guess what: see #2 for relevant demand evidence), and magically the number comes remarkably close to the price sorted out in #2 massively most of the time

I've never heard a real estate agent complain that zillow's numbers are too low, mind you... only ever that they're too high, which makes sense to be frustrated by if your biggest challenge is controlling your time-costs.

famousactress··on Shopping coming to Instagram
It's pretty nuts to me how many people already use Instagram as a business platform, literally for sales. I have a couple of friends for instance who own a vintage clothing/furnishings store and do MOST of their business posting items on Instagram, getting DM'd from people wanting to purchase, and then handling payments and pick up or delivery off of the platform. They're only one case of many I've noticed from folks who'd otherwise be on Etsy (or are also on Etsy, but have an easier time curating customers on Instagram and avoid the high fees).

Elation (http://elationemr.com) - SF, CA (Remote considered) Software & Site Reliability Engineers, Product Designer, and a number of other positions (see http://elationemr.com/jobs)

We build really great clinical tools for doctors and their patients. We've built a product-driven company around asking and answering questions in this space very differently from the way the rest of the market has approached these problems. We value empathy, pragmatism, and reasoning from first principles. Founded in 2010, we've raised money from some really incredible folks and spent the past five years doing lots of the challenging/messy early pathfinding - now we're looking to really grow the team and start taking on some really innovative challenges.

The tech stack is currently Python/Django/Javascript/ReactJS/MySQL/Redis/ElasticSearch/AWS/Java

Here are a couple of links to give you some idea about what we do and how we think:

This Quora post was written by one of our engineers explaining what we're building: https://www.quora.com/What-product-is-ElationEMR-building

Here's a blog post I wrote about one of the ways we stay close to our users: https://blog.elationemr.com/shadowing-a-physician-a-first-pe...

Here's an overview of how the company got started, from our co-founders Kyna and Conan: https://www.elationemr.com/philosophy/

My contact information is in my profile. I was the first engineering hire in 2010, now head the product org for Elation and I'm available in real time if you'd like to hit me up on skype/email/twitter with any questions about Elation or the Healthcare IT industry in general!

famousactress··on The Art of Tidying Up
I enjoyed the book but agree that it was pretty pedantic and for lots of people that's overkill. That said, I think you missed the two points that I found most useful:

1. When deciding what to keep/discard, keep things that "spark joy in your heart". That is, don't use rules like "If I haven't worn this in X".. The book's explanations around this are pretty helpful. 2. Do the big purge in order of type-of-thing... not room by room. I think the specific order prescribed is something like Clothes, Books, Papers, [I forget, I forget], Keepsakes. Going by type makes it easier to make sound decisions, and the sequence of types warms you up for hard purges (keepsakes, etc) that will otherwise likely hang you up in room #1.

All of that said, I only really got through Clothes, books, and papers... but even just that was massively helpful.

famousactress··on Advent of Code – solve a puzzle every day
"The first character in the instructions has position 1, the second character has position 2"

This project seems awesome but playful -1 for non-zero-based-indexing :)

[Edit:]

another note (obviously I'm hooked).. This instruction isn't 100% parseable. It's not clear whether the desire is for three unique vowels need to appear or if three positions in the string need to be vowels. For instance, would 'aaa' qualify?

"It contains at least three vowels (aeiou only), like aei, xazegov, or aeiouaeiouaeiou"

[Edit Again: Nevermind... the test example 'aaa' clears it up]

famousactress··on Repair is a Radical Act

famousactress··on Repair is a Radical Act
I want to add an anecdote to inject some reality into this discussion. I bought a wetsuit from Patagonia in 2009 (I think). They were super new to the wetsuit industry and I paid 300+$ during their "half price" sale. Full price was ~600$ and 300 was the price for the top of the line "money is no object" wetsuit.

For someone who surfs a lot (me) wetsuits traditionally last about three years/seasons. Last year my patagonia wetsuit was showing it's age and I brought it to the store. They sent it to their repair shop and the repair folks re-taped every seam, put new knee patches in and installed a new car-key-loop (original suit lacked one) free of charge.

The neoprene is starting to break down and the suit isn't as warm as it used to be. I anticipate I'll get this season out of it and maybe 1-2 more.

The company is fanatical about the quality of the products they produce and even more fanatical about their support/repair for those products.

famousactress··on Repair is a Radical Act
That's literally happening at Patagonia and has been for more than twenty years.

It's worth reading Yvonne's book [1]. In it, he talks about Patagonia clothes becoming fashionable in the 80's which led to a spike in demand, then a trough when fashion shifted and layoffs which deeply hurt him and the company. The reaction was to focus severely on attracting customers that were using the products for utility and to discourage others from purchasing. Wonder why you can't buy everything Patagonia makes in black, like you can for anything North Face? This is why. Wondering why effectively everything they make with a hood has an oversized hood that fits a helmet instead of being geared to bay geeks that have to walk two blocks from their Uber in the rain? This is why.

Yah, but I still declare that a pretty insane and incredibly myopic outlook on making something beautiful. You and I both have two year olds... How much commercial or reputational return are you counting on for yours?

Mine seems pretty smart, and plausibly in the height percentile to be headed to WNBA... but not really counting on returns, and she's the most labor intensive experience in my life so far :)
