falsandtru··on jQuery v4.0 Beta
Just removed "Automatic" JSONP "promotion". JSONP is still available.
falsandtru··on jQuery v4.0 Beta
jQuery remains the best JSONP library. It can get data even when other libraries are blocked.
falsandtru··on True LRU: LRU is false
LRU and Clock are significantly low performance due to their wrong algorithm based on false recency. True recency outperforms false recency.

There are three kinds of recency relationships between entries, used and used, used and unused, and unused and unused. However, LRU and Clock violate some recency. True LRU outperforms LRU and Clock by observing all recency.

The fundamental error is that new entries are considered most recently used. In fact, they have never been used in the cache. Therefore, new entries must to be added after the entries actually used.

  Sequence: 1, 2, 3, 3, 2, 4

  LRU

  MRU |4 2 3 1| LRU
  Hit |0 1 1 0|
^ Violation of the recency between used and unused.

  Clock

  N-1 |4 3 2 1| 0
  Hit |0 1 1 0|
^ Violation of the recency between used and used.

  True LRU

  MRU |2 3 4 1| LRU
  Hit |1 1 0 0|
        ^ ^ ^ Ideal recency.
falsandtru··on Stories removed from the Hacker News Front Page, updated in real time
Can you also list the original times on the front page for consistency in rankings?
falsandtru··on Stories removed from the Hacker News Front Page, updated in real time
Dang explained here that it could happen.
falsandtru··on Stories removed from the Hacker News Front Page, updated in real time
If you don't know it could be a bug. Next time I find it, I will report it.

I have heard that sometimes the submission time is reset, such as when returning from the second chance pool. This could also create an unnatural ranking order, so the original time before the reset should be listed as well.

falsandtru··on Stories removed from the Hacker News Front Page, updated in real time
There are several low-point, long-lived but highly ranked unnatural posts on the top page that appear to be manipulated. Such unnaturalness and opacity make users feel that the ranking is arbitrary and unfair, even if for good reasons. Can you display the manipulation that has been done on the ranking and other lists per post? For example, a reset of the submission time should be easily displayed.
falsandtru··on Google search drops cache link from search results
Those don't work on PDFs.
falsandtru··on Google search drops cache link from search results
It looks like nothing more than a cost-cutting measure.

Cache is needed for machine translation of PDFs. This change has made it difficult to read PDFs written in other languages.

falsandtru··on On the dimensionality of spacetime (1997) [pdf]
It is possible by deforming it in the fourth dimension, like folding paper. However, the shapes that can be created by folding are considered limited.
falsandtru··on On the dimensionality of spacetime (1997) [pdf]
A CPU, a planar object, does so by extending its fins in the three-dimensional direction, but not without limit. Similarly, even if the fourth dimension can be used, it cannot be used without limit. Also, just as there are no two-dimensional objects without thickness in three-dimensional space, there are no three-dimensional objects without thickness in four-dimensional space, and all three-dimensional objects are considered to have size in the fourth-dimensional direction in four-dimensional space. However, if there is such a simple fourth spatial dimension, it should be easily recognizable, so if there is a fourth spatial dimension, it should be closely attached to other known dimensions so that it cannot be found. Finding or creating a usable space out of a closely attached fourth spatial dimension would be a large cost.
falsandtru··on Google search is losing the fight with SEO spam, study says
New posts on my blog have been getting steady inflows from Bing for over a month now, but zero from Google. I never thought the day would come when Google's search quality would be worse than Bing's. Google's search quality for the long tail seems to have declined very much.
falsandtru··on Remote work doesn't seem to affect productivity, Fed study finds
It is interesting that this opinion is getting high marks in HN. Useful information for employers.
falsandtru··on Remote work doesn't seem to affect productivity, Fed study finds
That's a right incentive for workers, but what is needed here for workers is an incentive for companies to expand remote work.
falsandtru··on Remote work doesn't seem to affect productivity, Fed study finds
The fact that productivity did not increase would also mean that few people used the freed up commuting time to improve their skills. Anybody here?
falsandtru··on Is htmx Just Another JavaScript Framework?
An example on the top page shows that this is an operation that should be written as a program. Therefore, this is not markup. Syntax that is not markup will not be the HTML specification.

falsandtru··on Bottled water has 'up to 100 times' more bits of plastic than previously feared
> "Previous studies found the major chemical composition to be PET, which is expected since the bottle is made of PET," Yan told us. "Therefore, for a long time, we had the impression that the majority of plastic particles inside bottled water would be Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) particles of a few hundred nanometers in size."

> "That was incorrect," Yan said.

> Ironically enough, the most commonly detected plastic was polyamide, a material commonly used in water filtration systems and "the most popular membrane material used in reverse osmosis … a common water purification method shared by all three brands [of water tested]," the team wrote in the paper.

Too different from the title. And the other comments seem to have been written without reading the text.

falsandtru··on Sieve is simpler than LRU
> This isn't exactly a paper on room temperature superconductors...

Same in every field.

> I read plenty of compsci papers and whitepapers, I just don't have to work with this specific niche of web caching.

You clearly have no expertise in this field. Over.

falsandtru··on Sieve is simpler than LRU
> The actual papers themselves seem pretty solid from a surface reading as a non-expert, at least in terms of having clear explanations and easily verifiable results.

If you only read one paper in an unfamiliar field, you will not know if it lacks the necessary analysis.

falsandtru··on Sieve is simpler than LRU
I probably should have written the opposite. English is unfamiliar.
falsandtru··on Sieve is simpler than LRU
Just to clarify, this means hype cache algorithms are basically not replaceable with common cache algorithms such as LRU or ARC.
falsandtru··on Sieve is simpler than LRU
Recent hype cache algorithms are characterized by cherry-picking hit rates in content caching such as CDNs. Common cache algorithms such as ARC, LIRS, and TinyLFU have made consistent and common comparisons across a variety of disk access patterns, but hype cache algorithms boast hit/miss rates for network accesses without these comparisons. Hype cache algorithms have only been validated in a very narrow domain, and their general superiority has not been validated at all.
falsandtru··on JAL A359 at Tokyo collided with Coast Guard DH8C on runway and burst into flames
A person in the back who appears to be a crew is standing with her seatbelt unbuckled, so the aircraft is probably stopped. The behavior of the passengers also indicates that it was after landing.
falsandtru··on JAL A359 at Tokyo collided with Coast Guard DH8C on runway and burst into flames
> There was confusion and no evacuation was ordered by the crew over the PA. The passengers managed it themselves.

Here is an in-flight video. It appears that the passengers did not manage the evacuation.

falsandtru··on Otter, Fastest Go in-memory cache based on S3-FIFO algorithm
I am disgusted by people who are repulsed by even the correction of a complete error. They must have bad grades in college. From now on, we have no choice but to leave it alone even if a false rumor is spread.
falsandtru··on Otter, Fastest Go in-memory cache based on S3-FIFO algorithm
I did a comparison on your data sets such as DS1, and S3-FIFO had very lower hit ratios than LRU in most cases. I think there are very limited situations where S3-FIFO is best.
falsandtru··on Otter, Fastest Go in-memory cache based on S3-FIFO algorithm
My implementation is reviewed and linked from the official S3-FIFO page.

https://s3fifo.com

A benchmark is as follows.

https://github.com/ben-manes/caffeine/wiki/Efficiency

I can't deal with you any longer. Over.

falsandtru··on Otter, Fastest Go in-memory cache based on S3-FIFO algorithm
There is an established benchmark for testing loop resistance (GLI, Loop). S3-FIFO has not passed this test. And I have already confirmed that S3-FIFO does not pass the test.
falsandtru··on Otter, Fastest Go in-memory cache based on S3-FIFO algorithm
Sometimes referred to as tolerance. There is no established terminology, so the only way to find out is to use scan or loop as keywords.
falsandtru··on Otter, Fastest Go in-memory cache based on S3-FIFO algorithm
Not equivalent completely. Scan is a one-time access, so it never hits in scanning. Loop is multi-time accesses, so it can get many hits in looping if it has loop resistance. No hits on scan resistance in looping. Over.
