falk··on Snowden asylum still under review, stays in airport for now
The United States government traffics drugs such as heroin [1], has started wars under false pretenses to profit multi-national corporations [2] [3], backs death squads in Indonesia [4], tried to convince Martin Luther King Jr. to commit suicide [5], has conducted covert operations to dismantle and replace government structures across the world [6], has conducted experiments involving drugs like LSD on unwilling participants [7], is known to kidnap and torture people [8] [9], intercepts phone calls in the United States and collects every piece of information they can disregarding the constitution [10] [11] [12], performs drone strikes that kill innocent civilians [13], and kills American citizens without due process [14] [15]. Do you honestly believe they haven't killed any vocal opponents including journalists? If so, that is massively dangerous thinking.

Edit: Saw another comment and did some more digging. Found a great article which I'll quote some of. You can find a link to it below.

"On April 8, 2003, during the US-led invasion of Iraq, Al Jazeera correspondent Tareq Ayoub was killed when a US warplane bombed Al Jazeera's headquarters in Baghdad."

"Disturbingly, more journalists were murdered in targeted killings in Iraq than died in combat-related circumstances, according to the group Committee to Protect Journalists."

""Between 2003 and 2010 more than 30 Iraqi journalists were detained and held in prisons in Iraq by the Americans," she explained. "All of these journalists were arbitrarily arrested by the Americans, just as they continue to be arrested by the Iraqi government today.""

"I mean, Putin straight kills journalists."

So does the United States of America.

The United States government wants to make an example out of Snowden. There's no way he would serve just two years in prison.

falk··on Snowden asylum still under review, stays in airport for now
He and other writers at the Guardian have written about Snowden on multiple occasions. I haven't seen any other news outlets reporting that Snowden has been cleared or is on the verge of being cleared.

Edit: I just found some additional sources.

I wonder why Glenn Greenwald or the Guardian hasn't written anything about this yet?

falk··on Block NSA funding for collecting the call records of all Americans
Other comments made in this thread by snitko.

"Police officers, firefighters, teachers... Could it be that we don't really need any government to finance them? The demand is there. Private companies will be more than happy to fill it."

"I agree. Let's use Bitcoin. It's possible right here today and you don't give anyone a cut."

I hope people read the books OP mentioned. Anyone who advocates that we get rid police officers, firefighters, and teachers in place of private entities is an extremist. Plain and simple.

He mentions David D. Friedman and Stefan Molyneux whom are libertarians. It doesn't matter if the government is funding private prisons, private prisons have one goal and one goal only: to get as many prisoners as possible. They will do whatever they can to get more prisoners. They've permanently damaged families across the country. How would you fund prisons beyond taxes? Bill the prisoner? The family? What about someone who maintains their innocence? The point of the matter is that snitko has come into a thread and contributed absolutely nothing.

This guy is nothing more than an extremist. Ask him about his prison system and I'm sure he'll parrot how privatized prisons are the solution to our woes. Alas, they aren't. Be weary of someone trying to tell you that if we just did X everything would be so much better.

This may sound farfetched, but it's not. If you're interested in learning more about the CIA and drugs, I recommend the following:

"We elected Bush in 2004 when he had Tom Ridge upping the terror alert every week before the election."

You hit the nail right on the head. The problem in America isn't the politicians, it's the people.

It's been working pretty well for Somalia I hear.

I found this Wikipedia article on tax resistance to be full of interesting information.

falk··on Bootstrapped, Profitable and Proud
I was being hyperbolic. Sorry. Amazon has made a minuscule amount of profit. Their numbers are horrible. I can't believe their shareholders put up with them.

Their most profitable year, 2010, they only made $1.15-billion of profit off of $34-billion in revenue.

In 2011 they made only $631-million off $48-billion.

In 2012 they had a worldwide loss of $39-million.

falk··on Bootstrapped, Profitable and Proud
The companies are proud because they're profitable, unlike Amazon or Salesforce.
falk··on iWork for iCloud beta
Perhaps, but this is just something I said in passing by the thread, so I shouldn't have to seek out another forum. If people want to down vote me because they can't accept that Apple isn't perfect then I reckon that's their prerogative. I own and use Apple products exclusively and I think it's important to point out their flaws. Google has much better web applications.
falk··on iWork for iCloud beta
iWork for iCloud which is a part of iCloud.com. I'm strictly speaking of the website for iCloud. It's awful. It takes a long time to load and is stuck with a clunky user-interface that mimics iOS/OS X. It doesn't look right and it doesn't feel right. Apple needs to hire people who know how to design a web application.
falk··on Canada's Start-up Visa
If Canada wants to attract start-ups, they should get rid of software patents.
falk··on iWork for iCloud beta
iCloud.com sucks. They're trying to replicate iOS UI and functionality in the browser and it's an abysmal failure. Steve Jobs always liked to tout Apple and their employees as artists. Well artists have to know their medium and that's something Apple really needs to work on.

Edit: What's with all the down votes? This is valid criticism.

falk··on Leaked report shows high civilian death toll from CIA drone strikes
"By comparison, our press and government practiced transparency -- they may have lied, but not on the scale the others did."

"I keep slipping back into believing the United States government believes in honesty and transparency..."

The U.S. government never believed in honesty and transparency and you're lying to yourself thinking that they did. Our press has constantly manipulated us. Lies and secrets are just getting easier to expose.

I suggest you read the following:

- A People's History of the United States: 1492 to Present by Howard Zinn

- Manufacturing Consent: The Political Economy of the Mass Media by Edward S. Herman and Noam Chomsky

falk··on Why the war on drugs has been made redundant
Because marijuana is a schedule 1 drug it's rather hard to study. Not that it should matter because any adult should be able to put whatever they want in their body.

falk··on Questions about Cameron’s ‘new’ porn-blocking
This makes a nice tagline, but the first amendment, like almost all of the other ones, has been eroded over time. For example, having to have a permit to protest in high traffic areas.
falk··on Mastering Modern Payments Using Stripe with Rails
I'm not the author, just stumbled upon the website while searching for a a thorough tutorial on integrating Stripe and Rails. I agree that he should let us know the pricing ahead of time.
falk··on Move over NSA, here comes the Obamacare Big Brother database
This article is nothing but partisan politics. People voted for Obama twice knowing his healthcare plan/stance, but we didn't vote for the guy to have him spy on us and take away our 4th amendment rights.
falk··on Foundation 4.3: Paving the Road to 5
Thank you for the link.
falk··on Foundation 4.3: Paving the Road to 5
This looks great. I have a feeling that Foundation is going to gain more traction than Bootstrap in the long term. I've seen @mdo and @fat asked several times online when Bootstrap 3 is coming out and they've said soon for the last few months. Very vague. Foundation has the weight of a company, Zurb, pushing it forward.
falk··on The PRISM letter Google, Yahoo, Apple, Facebook, Microsoft are sending Congress
Yahoo! should pivot into a privacy and security conscious company. They're already on record for fighting against government tyranny.
falk··on Yahoo Mail is not catching up anymore
I'd love to see Yahoo! differentiate itself from its competitors by becoming a privacy conscious company.
falk··on Show HN: HireMyFriend – Get your friends to help you find a new job
Awesome, I'm glad your really thinking everything over. To be honest, it wasn't entirely clear to be that you can pick the friends you want to tweet about you. I guess now looking at it that seems rather obvious, haha. It would be really cool to see a recommendation engine, for example, "We think you should ask your friend John Doe to endorse you because he has a massive Twitter following, speaks regularly to companies X, Y, and Z, whom are all hiring. We've analyzed his profile and it looks pretty non-controversial." It's good to see you guys are making use of Twitter and not Facebook. That's a huge selling point for me. Good luck to you guys.

It sounds like you guys are doing all the right things. Keep it up and you'll have many paying customers.
falk··on White Coke
Socialism is essentially when the worker's own the means of production, so I'd look into worker owned companies.

Here's a list of worker owned companies that have a Wikipedia page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_employee-owned_companie...

falk··on Infinit is a new simple file sharing app for OSX, using P2P
Can we get more information on the privacy and encryption aspects of Infinit? I like what you guys are doing but in light of all this NSA/PRISM hullabaloo, I'm becoming really cautious about what online services I use. Are your servers in Paris as well? I don't mean to put you on the spot or anything.
