To be fair, all researchers are aging.
fahrvrgnugen··on Claude discovers a novel enzyme system with CRISPR-like repeats
This can't be described as cringe. That's such an odd adjective to use, it seems to me.
fahrvrgnugen··on Why I'm still bearish on LLMs after Navier-Stokes
It's not my experience at all. If you find yourself in a novel position within 10-15 moves it's likely a resignable one.

Edit: maybe you don't understand what i mean by novel position. I mean any position that has never been reached in the billions of lichess games, including bullet games among beginners.

Also yes I will concede that it's possible to make "quiet" moves. pawn nudges that barely affect anything. If you're doing those you're not 1500 ELO. You're intentionally trying to throw wrenches and I just don't see why an ELO bot even needs to bother with nonsense like that. This is supposed to be for fun / training!

Not sure about souls but I know a fair bit about distilling spirits.
fahrvrgnugen··on Why I'm still bearish on LLMs after Navier-Stokes
It's much smaller than that. You would be unlikely to find yourself in a novel position after 40 moves even if you were trying.

In my house you don't heat the water but it's been sitting in a metal water tank at equitorial latitude for hours so is generally quite warm for evening dishes.

Is it safe? Not for a restaurant where the temps need to get to parasite killing temps to pass muster.. but if I had to guess, the odds of getting killed by a bad-tempered cow outweigh it by 10x.

fahrvrgnugen··on Saving Jet Fuel
Carbon offsets for that wasted fuel would run $500. Pay that and I will be happy.
fahrvrgnugen··on Saving Jet Fuel
At that point it's too late for the cow either way.
fahrvrgnugen··on Saving Jet Fuel
It's frustrating to bother at all then hear about someone blowing 3x your annual carbon on a whim. Oh well.

And meanwhile here I am feeling guilty when I eat a cheeseburger.
fahrvrgnugen··on Why I'm still bearish on LLMs after Navier-Stokes
I feel like every position is in the database so you could just lookup the most popular move for an arbitrary elo and that's the bot.
fahrvrgnugen··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (September 2026)
Timing is the strategy though. Buying Moderna is either a good idea or a bad idea depending on when you do it.
fahrvrgnugen··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (September 2026)
Spaghetti on tuesday and tacos on friday? Anarchy.
fahrvrgnugen··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (September 2026)
Why would that matter? It's either a good strategy or it isn't.

Personally I think hobbyists that think they can second guess institutional finance are just fooling themselves.

fahrvrgnugen··on Show HN: What if the speed of light was 5 km/h?
light is 186k miles per second, the other side of the globe is 12.5k miles away - so 67 ms / 130ms+ round trip in optimum conditions. Add more for network hops and consider that fiber is not quite as fast as vacuum.

300ms feels extremely optimistic coming from my perspective of someone living on an island in SE Asia
