fahrradflucht··on WordSafety: Check a name for unwanted meanings in foreign languages
I was about to complain about the lack of https. But for a five year old side-project you may be forgiven .
fahrradflucht··on Apple commits to be 100% carbon neutral for supply chain and products by 2030
But "no footprint" seams pretty far away if not impossible. They claim _carbon_ neutrality in 10 years. There will still be pollution and resource over consumption which product lifecycle extension could work to improve up on.
fahrradflucht··on NewPipe – ad-free, open-source Android YouTube client
I read a lot of people's experiences here in the thread and I think a lot of you really should give YouTube Premium a try. It solves most of the problems you are describing, while also paying the creators
fahrradflucht··on Uber CEO Wants to Shift More Engineering Jobs to India, Sparking Internal Debate
Yes. But remember that this includes health insurance, basic retirement, unemployment benefits and so on.
fahrradflucht··on Uber CEO Wants to Shift More Engineering Jobs to India, Sparking Internal Debate
For a single without kids, 50%, meaning 40k in your pocket, is a good rule of thumb, yes.
fahrradflucht··on Uber CEO Wants to Shift More Engineering Jobs to India, Sparking Internal Debate
At least in Germany, $80k salary would mean costs of nearly $100k for the employer because of additional social security payments required. So it really isn't a fair comparison.
fahrradflucht··on Roll Your Own Frameworks
There is a long page in morepath's documentation explaining how it differs from others. [0]

fahrradflucht··on Backblaze B2 Cloud Storage Now Has S3 Compatible APIs
Hetzner offers S3 compatible storage? I didn't find anything about that...
fahrradflucht··on Phoenix LiveDashboard
What I don't understand with these technologies, is how you do continuous deployment without breaking all running client sessions evertime.
fahrradflucht··on EventReduce: An algorithm to optimize database queries that run multiple times
There is also noria [0] which is basically a SQL database with integrated materialized views with memcached like perf. - But I think it is more in a research state.

fahrradflucht··on YouTube to limit default video quality around the world for a month
Judging from DE-CIX Frankfurt stats [0], there is still a peak, but normal day time level is now above, what was the peak 2 weeks ago.

fahrradflucht··on A 7KB AWS lambda Node.js library with zero runtime dependencies
But you can still have concurrency while handling a single invocation.
fahrradflucht··on A 7KB AWS lambda Node.js library with zero runtime dependencies
I agree, although for server side rendering of web frontends, it is still the best choice even though producing vdom and rendering it to string is usually cpu bound.
fahrradflucht··on Stocks Up $1T Since October
Why does this stand in conflict with acknowledging the fact that massive gains for stock prices (or property for that matter) caused by things like QE and alike, have massive social consequences since the ones that were already wealthy profit a lot more than the average Joes's 401k?

You can be a happy investor and still think about the dangers of rising inequality fueled by the market, no?

fahrradflucht··on Show HN: The best technology podcast episodes
Came here to say that. On mobile there is no way to read the full title of an episode. No detail page, no click through to the original post.
fahrradflucht··on A computer built from NOR gates: inside the Apollo Guidance Computer
That is basically the premise of the awesome Nand2Tetris[0] book/project.

[0] https://www.nand2tetris.org/

Edit: Just saw that it is even referenced[1] in the article itself.

fahrradflucht··on Rest-client gem is hijacked
The argument for automated releases is always that it is quite easy to do silly mistakes like forgetting a build step while doing manual releases. This also happened to high profile npm packages in the past and people complained that there was no automation.
fahrradflucht··on Facebook adds 5 divs, 9 spans and 30 CSS classes to every post in the timeline
I'm not sure this has anything to do with adblockers. It could just be that they generate class names which is common in modern frontend build chains, wrap things in a lot of divs because they compose the styles in some kind of design system and have some kind of <span>S</span> hack to let UI text wrap at syllables.
fahrradflucht··on Dear Spotify, please let me unlink my Facebook account
Yeah, there is also the thing where they don't allow you to change your address when you are on family [0].

fahrradflucht··on Javascript: call functions without using parentheses
Try adding interpolations to your example to make sense of this.

  console.log`foo${123}baz`
You get an array so that you later can interleaf the parts with the interpolations you get as additional arguments.
fahrradflucht··on Faster – Fast key-value store from Microsoft Research
To compare it to rocksdb or leveldb: it looks like there is no iteration support or the notion of ordered keys to support partial scans...
fahrradflucht··on How open is too open?
archive.org link since at least for me the page seems overloaded: https://web.archive.org/web/20180702100253/http://ivory.idyl...
fahrradflucht··on Simplify Login with Application Load Balancer Built-In Authentication
I'm a big fan of this stuff myself so don't get me wrong, but I think it is still a little bit worse to be locked into a cloud provider which can change rates/pricing on you any time, then being locked into a framework.
fahrradflucht··on You know how HTTP GET requests are meant to be idempotent?
Isn't the point of this thread that the OT says that he shouldn't have used GET for this?
fahrradflucht··on Hyper 2, Electron based terminal
That has already been done [0].

fahrradflucht··on Show HN: LambdaPHP – Host any PHP website on AWS Lambda instantly
Why is that? Couldn't you keep php running for the lambda lifetime? That way only when the lambda cold starts there would be no cache.
fahrradflucht··on Chrome 68 will mark all HTTP sites as “not secure”
Interestingly the german lawyers association build a software that does nearly this. Just with a small design change that made it a total flaw:

To communicate out of a https secured web mailer to a local IP and Port where a security card reader driver would respond they registered bealocalhost.de which resolves to 127.0.0.1. To prevent mixed content errors they then shipped the private key for a https certificate for bealocalhost compiled into the card reader driver.

Obviously after someone noticed that the cert got instantly revoked...

fahrradflucht··on Show HN: Hiding code from Git diff
Obviously you have to test the combination but the merging allows an easier rollback.
fahrradflucht··on Post a boarding pass on Facebook, get your account stolen
Or in a lot of different formats and also for download on media.ccc.de:

fahrradflucht··on JavaScript is Eating the World
npm always did this. The OC said that he likes that yarn can also run local binaries that are not a npm script.
