fahadkhan··on “Common view” that Japanese are typically collectivists is not supported by data
That's probably why people think it's okay to listen to music or have conversations on speakerphone. I'm not saying you are obligated to attempt to stop antisocial behaviour. You are proving his assumptions that people don't really mind.
fahadkhan··on The nature of our experience of reality remains elusive
In this case I see reason. Philosophy is often seen as a soft subject in the UK, saying that he studied at Oxford removes any doubt that it was a serious degree.

I might be biased though, I've enjoyed reading a fair few Will Self books.

fahadkhan··on Reasons not to use Netflix
Which? I only really see my little bubble of Netflix, of course, but a prominent part of that is Black Mirror and Big Bang Theory so it could go either way.
fahadkhan··on Facebook JavaScript SDK is often illegal under GDPR
Assuming every person (worldwide) read the post.
fahadkhan··on ‘My Hovercraft Is Full of Eels’ in Many Languages
Machli (fish) is too generic, I think. "Hawai kashti" is probably right. I don't know if it's in use. Most likely the word is Hovercraft.
fahadkhan··on ‘My Hovercraft Is Full of Eels’ in Many Languages
There's a invitation to contact the author with additions at the bottom of the page. I would if I knew what eel and hovercraft are in Urdu.
fahadkhan··on iOS 11.4 to Disable USB Port After 7 Days: What It Means for Mobile Forensics
To kill the competition? Not saying that that is the case, only that it maybe a possible motive
fahadkhan··on The Very First Animal Appeared Amid an Explosion of DNA
I believe it's called "convergent evolution". But I am not a geneticist, biologist,...

fahadkhan··on Is there a fix for impostor syndrome?
"The best lack all conviction, while the worst Are full of passionate intensity." -- 1920 W. B. Yeats

Somewhat true of our industry.

fahadkhan··on Facebook has auto-enrolled users into a facial recognition test in Europe
And 99.999% of Facebook users won't care. Most of those that do, can't leave Facebook because of "events." The rest of us will keep preaching to each other about how we're in a better place having never been of Facebook or having deleted our accounts.
fahadkhan··on Decades-Old Graph Problem Yields to Amateur Mathematician
From a bank balance perspective, yes!

(Probably anyway, I don't personally know anyone that is Thiel backed)

fahadkhan··on We work for Google. Our employer shouldn't be in the business of war
World Wars have not been the normal state in history.
fahadkhan··on We work for Google. Our employer shouldn't be in the business of war
> The world is relatively peaceful because the US is more powerful than all other nations combined.

This not true. The US and it's allies are constantly at war somewhere in the world. Chomsky has written extensively about this

fahadkhan··on We work for Google. Our employer shouldn't be in the business of war
3. Being good at avoiding wars is a great thing.

(Which I believe is the intent of the signatories)

fahadkhan··on The time spent on practising white board test may not be worthy
I find this useful https://airtable.com/shr5TdnpVYVTpeRrN/tbluCbToxQ2knSLhh

Companies interested getting placed on it should raise PRs on https://github.com/poteto/hiring-without-whiteboards

fahadkhan··on Facebook spamming users via their 2FA phone numbers
Some of what I need to arrange can be done with calendar invites.
fahadkhan··on Facebook spamming users via their 2FA phone numbers
I left Facebook. But mainly because I realised that it's a real poor way to keep in touch with anyone. Gives you the feeling that you are keeping in touch when in reality you are just sharing photos and quotes in a medium that's very noisy with adverts.
fahadkhan··on Samsung’s Galaxy S9 looks set to retain the headphone jack
Didn't think of that, haven't tested it but strongly doubt it. I'd expect a faulty wire to crackle predictably when moved which isn't what I experience.
fahadkhan··on Samsung’s Galaxy S9 looks set to retain the headphone jack
Audio quality on my headphones (Senheiser M2) is better via Bluetooth than wired. Not sure why.
fahadkhan··on Is developer compensation becoming bimodal?
According to www.itjobswatch.co.uk a senior Java developer earns £70k. But can command day rate of £575. That works out at about double. Suggestion it is bimodal.
fahadkhan··on Shotcut: Free, open source, cross-platform video editor
Thanks, I see. Unfortunately I don't have my Linux machine with. I'll try it later and report my experience.
fahadkhan··on Shotcut: Free, open source, cross-platform video editor
There is a snap package, does that not work for you?
fahadkhan··on A sample of brilliance
Seems like the distribution of S will be different to the the others. Guessing the probability of picking card N is greater than picking a card less than N. I haven't given it much thought.
fahadkhan··on Graham's Number Is Too Big to Tell How Big It Is
"And in Go, which has a 19-by-19 board and over 10150 possible positions, even an amateur human can still rout the world’s top-ranked computer programs."

When was this written? Evidently before 2017.

fahadkhan··on My Forgotten Language: the brain can lose and reclaim an abandoned mother tongue
My kids seem manage Shanghainese, Urdu, English (in RP, cockney and a Pakistani accent) pretty well.

I was surprised to hear my son (at the time only four) say "Hiro is the hero Big Hero 6." Pronouncing both Hiro and hero correctly.

fahadkhan··on James Damore has filed a class action lawsuit against Google
I don't much like what Damore appears to say but in fairness that sentence does not say "less capable". That he uses "in part" and "may explain" means that it doesn't say much at all while appearing to say something, to me at least.
fahadkhan··on Chess champion to miss Saudi Arabia tournament over women's rights
In the down voter's defence the comment is somewhat trollish. But it's hard to be anything but trollish about the subject.
fahadkhan··on Chess champion to miss Saudi Arabia tournament over women's rights
> Luckily this nonsense hasn't spread to Europe and North America for the most part.

Isn't that what Trump's "Muslim ban" is?

fahadkhan··on Kids Praised for Being Smart Are More Likely to Cheat
Interestingly, in the London, UK at least, demonstrating that you made an effort to pay a parking ticket but were not able to will normally mean you do not have to pay the fine.

For instance, I was fined for not displaying a parking ticket. But I took a picture of the machine that wasn't able to process my payment. I emailed picture to the appeals process and was forgiven the fine. Which essentially meant I got to park for free (shiny sticker)

fahadkhan··on When did software go off the rails?
I don't disagree, but the counter is also true. If the developers didn't care about front end performance there wouldn't books on the topic.
