faebi··on Ask HN: Is an union for sw developers still a bad idea?
Even that depends. The one's in Switzerland are absolutely useless and are just used by the core members to make it impossible to fire them. I must pay the union, can not opt-out and they waste my money since a decade. Ours has an unemployment insurance which didn't pay for half a year instead of a few weeks. When I once needed their help, nobody answered. This despite them being available across our whole organization. None out of many helped. I am looking at you Complan, you are the worst. /r
faebi··on Why is Chat GPT so expensive to operate?
Maybe that will be the next use case to make larger amounts of memory mainstream. At the same time, somehow Tesla still manages to cram more and more neural nets into that small memory. So it could also be that many neural nets are just not really efficient yet.
faebi··on Ask HN: Does anyone have a cold storage for their cloud photo backups?
I just buy a hard disk every other year and throw a google export there.
faebi··on Ask HN: What supplements do you take that have good scientific backing?
- Caffeine

- Some local "Probiotic" pills, but they seem to be from a culture which actually has some scientific testing. They made my belly a lot happier. Seems to help after alcohol too. Not sure how international this is. A lot of science is pointing to the fact that many things can support the microbiome. I take irregular for a few days in a row.

- Electrolytes on demand

- I plan to take very low doses of Aspirin as I get older as it seems to be helpful in preventing heart attacks.

faebi··on Switzerland: snow flown in by helicopter in attempt to keep ski slopes open
I'm from Zürich, and they literally transported half the forest away using helicopters. Took them weeks. I have no idea how that made sense.
faebi··on Ask HN: Best Uses for Old iPads?
A NTP synchronized digital clock with battery backup and NTP failover to 3G. Just install a clock app. It‘s also a great alarm.
faebi··on Ruby 3.2.0
Nearly, except when using fish shell on non MacOS devices
faebi··on News for Ruby 3.2.0
While on the topic, I still don‘t get it why we have [].last but {}.last fails with a NoMethodError.
faebi··on 24-core CPU and I can’t move my mouse (2017)
My windows literally doesn‘t boot today due to a bluescreen. No idea why or how that happened. Had it a few times in life before, but never on macos.
faebi··on Ask HN: How do you overcome decision paralysis when shopping?
Today it took me 2 hours in the pub to choose a dish, and then they told me it was sold out. I might have some of that decision paralysis.
faebi··on Ask HN: Programs that saved you 100 hours? (2022 edition)
Switching to Vscode saved me a lot of time, especially the multi cursor behavior. I was using VIM, Tmux and iTerm before. Remote development is a breeze, connections and sessions are never lost. Many extensions get better and better, even a hated maintenance task is easier if you have a nice and easy language integration.

Docker, but these days I take it as granted.

faebi··on YouTube spam comments are out of control. Many comments with 1000s of upvotes
The content is extremely controversial, yes. But check all the scammers in the comment section. It‘s truly mindblowing.
faebi··on Just use Postgres for everything
Can I use a few postgres tables as redis style in memory database? Can I finally have more connections to postgres without using pgbouncer?
faebi··on The Tesla Semi cab from the practical POV of someone who drives trucks
I do really wonder what the Euro-style Semi will look like. Will it be complete redesign or will the just replace the cabin?
faebi··on Simulate Asteroid Impacts on Earth
I didn't think about going that far, but yes, that would have been the way to go.
faebi··on Simulate Asteroid Impacts on Earth
I'm not very good in successful HN titles, therefore I let ChatGPT write that one for me with this prompt:

Rewrite the following twitter message as a hackernews title. It should be as successfull as possible and attract many readers

Original Tweet: New page! Make your own asteroid and launch it at Earth to see the effects.

faebi··on Building a Virtual Machine Inside ChatGPT
I already replaced a paragraph in our documentation about a system we use with a chapter generated by ChatGPT. Nobody noticed...
faebi··on Ruby adds a core class called Data to represent simple immutable value objects
Or ... you just ignore the rules

  john.instance_variable_set(:@name, "John Doe")

  john.send(:"instance_exec") do @name = "John Doe" end
I love ruby.
faebi··on Tailwind is a leaky abstraction
Sometimes I wonder why we don‘t use inline css more often instead of tailwind.
faebi··on Ruby concurrency is hard: how I became a Ruby on Rails contributor
And each release is a release train
faebi··on Audio over Bluetooth: detailed information about profiles, codecs, and devices
I just recently bought a Ugreen Bluetooth 5.3 Adapter in the hope of a more stable bluetooth connection for gaming with my xbox elite controller. I also hoped that my Airpods may have an acceptable latency under windows. I was disappointed, as with any Bluetooth dongle before it. This time I am experiencing multi 100ms jitter every other second. Has anyone had luck using Bluetooth? My only positive experience was on iOS with Airpods and with recent Macbooks.
faebi··on Unix time is bad and needs replacement, not UTC
Yes. Even storing a datetime from the future requires you to choose the correct DST the date is in, instead of the current one.
faebi··on Ask HN: What newsletters are you currently reading?
Ruby weekly has been really great for years
faebi··on Ask HN: What are you waiting to buy with a Black Friday / Cyber Monday deal?
2 TB SSD and maybe I can fulfill my dream of a 30'+, 4K, 144hz, 1000 nits screen.
faebi··on Ask HN: Is there editors and IDE crisis?
I think it's the opposite. Lots of developers seem to move to vscode. I have been using VIM for a decade and yet vscode also convinced me. The ecosystem seems to be striving. Ruby has been hard to integrate into any IDE and vscode seems to be able to somehow manage to convince the whole community to move towards a better integration. I haven't seen that before.
faebi··on HTML is all you need to make a website
I just wish we had something like Turbo Frames and Turbo Streams in a native browser format. Just set the endpoint, maybe some animation, and it will load it async. Add POST support and it's a pretty interactive app. https://turbo.hotwired.dev/handbook/frames
faebi··on A crash dummy aimed at protecting women drivers
I assume the numbers are even worse for very obese people and exceptionally tall people. Are obese dummies in use?
faebi··on 3D OpenStreetMap
It looks like my link has been edited by a mod. I purposefully placed the view in an area of Zürich with nice colorful roofs:

https://demo.f4map.com/#lat=47.3558590&lon=8.5115912&zoom=17

Also one needs to press the 3D Button on the top right, and maybe enable elevation in the graphic options menu hidden behind the burger menu.

faebi··on Ask HN: Is the YouTube shorts algorithm broken?
Perfect description of my shorts recommendations. Pretty strange, and feels like I'm not alone.
faebi··on Every day, I commit a new and more complicated version of some simple code
