factormeta··on Things the guys who stole my phone have texted me to try to get me to unlock it
>2. They do not care about foreigners or crimes unless they involve Chinese citizens.

Don't know if they really care that much about Chinese citizens. Probably just the ones in the politburo.

factormeta··on An animated introduction to Fourier series
The link to source code is broken. Looks like someone forgot to put a '/' in the href link. The actual link is:

https://www.andreinc.net/2024/04/24/assets/js/2024-04-24-fro...

Looks like it is using processing to do the animation.

factormeta··on L(O*62).ONG: Make your URL longer
thanks to the need for ES to accommodate SPA (one of the worse thing that has ever happens to the web), that allows ES/JS to change the URL of the page as long as it is within the same domain. What could go wrong. Don't try to make web a QT replacement. Crete your own freaking interface. Stop hijacking web as document based platform to squeeze everything in there.

factormeta··on Llama3 implemented from scratch
>Comparing LLMs to the Manhattan Project based on budget alone is stupid and arrogant

Just want to clarify. The comparison to Manhattan Project or CERN is referencing "the countless small hands feeding the machine." In projects such as these, roles and jobs are divided into small parts, that people who are working on it don't really see the forest from the tree, and that only a few that has the picture of the whole project.

factormeta··on Llama3 implemented from scratch
>There is something grim and dystopian, thinking about the countless small hands feeding the machine.

Dystopian indeed, this is pretty much how Manhattan Project and CERN were done, with many independent contractors doing different parts, and only a few has the overview. A page out of corporate management book, it very much allows concentration of power in the hands of a few.

factormeta··on Consistency LLM: converting LLMs to parallel decoders accelerates inference 3.5x
Kinda like the aiff -> mp3 conversion process. A lot of data is lost, but we human can really tell the too much of a difference?

factormeta··on JavaScript Naked Day
>You could make all of that without JS. I'm not sure why people keep conflating the language with the design decisions the website author took. Just HTML+CSS is enough to make all the badly designed sites you want.

Yup, now days you can make pretty good animation site with out JS! Why are people insisting on using JS to be a criteria to see a web page? Could be that the some big players are using it to fingerprint users?

factormeta··on Hackers found a way to open any of 3M hotel keycard locks
>Even if your cards are encrypted, it still can't guarantee you protection, because in most cases card readers are connected to controllers (not in the case of all-in-one devices like this lock) via Wiegand protocol, which doesn't provide any data encryption, so the identifier ID is transmitted over two wires in the clear form.

It is true, seems like probably better to go back to keys and lock.

factormeta··on Apple announces ability to download apps directly from websites in EU

Yup. Allow index db persistence, and push notification for PWA + WASAM support in mobile safari should do it.

factormeta··on Pulsar, the best code editor since Atom
VSCode extension store are controlled by MS, think it has being mentioned here on HN as on the control point. I don't totally avoid VSCode, but would ONLY use it as VSCodium and extensions that works in that.

It is not that hard to believe that "Microsoft also wanted as many developers as possible to do all their coding using an editor controlled by Microsoft" Seems like pretty standard MS practice.

factormeta··on A steep rise of Hacker News in Google rankings
HN can always change their robot.txt and prevent google from crawling. Many of copy left friends do that to their blog and site to prevent google/bing from indexing them.

factormeta··on Sent – Simple plaintext presentation tool
I get that it may sucks, but it is better to get an alert message? Or just do the rendering glitches?

What is cool about this project is stuff like this. >The presentation is displayed in a simple X11 window colored black on white for maximum contrast even if the sun shines directly onto the projected image. The content of each slide is automatically scaled to fit the window so you don't have to worry about alignment. Instead you can really focus on the content.

One can tell the author really had to use this deck in real situations.

factormeta··on EU to hit Apple with first ever fine in €500M penalty over music streaming
In deed, I wouldn't say Tim is a crack head. He is just NOT Steve. And Steve had an influence on the culture of the company that Tim can replicate. e.g: what Steve expressed at the Stanford commencement speech, was one of things that had many talented people got inspired about Apple. Now days it is just another MS/IBM/Oracle type corp with better design and brand with everything driven by market share, TV/Ads streams, etc.
factormeta··on Apple broke iPhone web apps in the EU for anticompetitive reasons – Tim Sweeney
>As much as I would love to agree, the general population really does not care about features like "home screen web apps". Nobody outside of HN even knows what they are.

This is always being thrown people when mentioning web app. How about let's start educating normal people outside of HN. Mozilla, Google, dump a bunch of campaign on it. Most app can be web, and don't need to be native.

factormeta··on EU to hit Apple with first ever fine in €500M penalty over music streaming
If Steve is the revolutionary, then Tim is the professional business/bureaucratic guy, whom I'm sure has optimized Apple a bunch from an operational and business perspective.

And when you have a business person running for too long, the company is going to focus on maintaining what is the growing revenue stream, market share, etc.

That is like traditions chicken farming vs free range chicken farming.

Keep in mind while free range chicken farming is better to market, it is also more messy.

It is fair to note, that JavascriptCore outperforms V8 already. However, it is in Zig. And Deno is in Rust.

Thanks for sharing that info!

Would like to see more runtime independent JS project such Hono. Although I'm not sure if it supports QuickJS.

factormeta··on YDB – an open source distributed SQL database
>Interesting, the separate compute and storage tiers is another system going that direction which I think is becoming almost the standard at this point, especially for "cloud-native" things designed to run on k8s. From what I can tell (it isn't very explicit on this point) they are avoiding a distributed consensus at the storage layer and instead relying on a single writer/multiple reader model with the single writer being enforced by assignment of the tablets in the compute tier, with the tablet being responsible for writing to multiple storage nodes for durability? (But I might be wrong)

Hmmm, 4D around the 90's/early 2000's also keep the data and code separated in 2 different files. They maybe still do, but haven't touched it in a while. Tech is more and more like fashion, if you wait around long enough it will come back. ;-)

factormeta··on Show HN: Boardzilla, a framework for making web-based board games
I get you, jsx is the most useful part about React. However, there is nanojsx now, which would be great to for mobile. React tend to push out large bundles. For example, MatterMost, it is great open source initiative, but the React front end often lags it quite a bit on older computers.
factormeta··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (February 2024)
>- functional programming, and/or Lisp, and/or statically typed ML-descendants;

Nice to see functional programming is being used compiler development R&D on quantum computing. Have you guys considered Ocaml and/or Haskell. Just wonder if there are certain quality that functional programming that is more suited for quantum computing related role?
