eyelovewe··on The 'Fuck You' Pattern
You do realize that their data includes half of humanities personal lives, if you count WhatsApp and tinder. It ain’t all cat pictures, I’m afraid
eyelovewe··on JavaScript Is Weird
I was a comp sci major.

Do you know what a Pointer is?

Do you know what passing by reference means?

Do you know what a heap allocation is vs pushing something into the stack?

Do you know what code and bss segments are and what they are for?

This is not about being right or wrong, I just can’t stand to watch total nonsense go unchallenged.

No, you cannot write a hardware device driver in a dynamic language, which is not to preclude code generation approaches, but to point out what low level hardware programming actually consists of: manipulating memory, registers included

eyelovewe··on Why did we ever think a student's first programming language didn't matter?
I recall struggling in algebra as I didn’t follow the particular process that the teacher went through, while some friends seemed to readily follow this same teacher, and yet upon one on one discussion, I had no problem comprehending the same.

Writing too much CRUD code makes me unable to complete sentences…
eyelovewe··on JavaScript Is Weird
Hey so can I write a device driver in JavaScript and is it a good language for that? How about my dma controller and python? What am I reading here. Not a comp sci major eh? Pass me something by reference in JavaScript, please
eyelovewe··on Judge dismisses FTC and state antitrust complaints against Facebook
Sorry, half of humanity has an account on Facebook or one of its satraps, numerically speaking. It is the singular only social network one can always find nearly everyone on. There is nothing even remotely close to comparable. Tiktok has some people lip syncing in the mirror to pop songs, I don’t know about local community centers tiktok profiles, sorry. Facebook is inevitable for doing literally anything in this world. It’s like linked-in but for realz. Facebook? (Inter) nationalize it! (How would that work. Interesting concept, turning something over to the world as community property)
eyelovewe··on The 'Fuck You' Pattern
Sounds like overkill, mate. I’ll go with your comments parent. Maybe 5 peanuts. In all seriousness, I’ll agree on cdn at 20 a month plus 3 @ 15 dollar nodes running out app and db, let’s go multimaster with a local db node on each app server, screw the c go for a and p, and yeah a single haproxy hardware thread, ha, so make that 2 single core nodes 1gb will do fine for 300k connections per second, um you mentioned staff? For what exactly?

Anyway, you can do anything the hard way, but what’s your point? That serving millions of cats per second requires big investment that must be recouped? I see most of this as rent seeking, and the infrastructure is economy of scale. Maybe you use tensor flow and Kafka inside Kubernetes, I dunno…

I agree that one can expect lame websites to act lame, but it’s out of sheer churlishness rather than necessity

eyelovewe··on Hacker deleted all of NewsBlur’s Mongo data and is now holding the data hostage
I must be a bit out of the loop, what’s the usecase to run a database inside Docker?

What is the general trend for Dockerizing everything based upon? Are we not already largely running in virtualized hypervisor instances on our clouds and do folks actually run multiple contained apps on one cloud instance? Not referring to using ones cloud providers scalable Kubernetes systems, of course, as I see where Docker comes in to play in that case.

eyelovewe··on Can programming be liberated from the von Neumann style? (1978)
I’m under the impression that it must actually function in the contrary: i.e. exotic non von Neumann hardware requires new programming approaches.

Example: a systolic array, which you are only likely to encounter as an FPGA bitstream, by its very nature requires a different approach. Flow based programming is a better match for this specific system.

What we have seen since this paper was written is often the shoehorning of new concepts under control of standard von Neumann style programming, whatever the reasons may be, often including programmer familiarity.

Central Asia… Apple being a relative of rose, a major wild plant all over from Kazhakistan, Altai Republic, Mongolia, etc… along with cannabis. You see these two plants just everywhere in the southern regions… I’ve also heard of likely Persian origin for many related fruits, such as peaches and apricots
eyelovewe··on Sen. Manchin call with billionaire donors re fillibuster and Jan 6 commission
This is the unvarnished truth at the heart of the matter. Your comment should not be grayed out, as our survival as a species depends largely upon getting past the individual vs society dichotomy and waking up to the realization that our singular species has to be able to act as a singular unit with regards to preserving life on planet earth and making better designed systems. Most of our so-called intractable problems could be solved in short order if badly designed systems that serve vested interests against the wellbeing of the group were altered. (Major long term conflicts, so-called “border crisis”, climate change, desertification, deforestation, overfishing, increasing economic disparities during pandemics, etc…)

All my opinion, of course, but God told me to mention this here, stone tablets being out of fashion and the likelihood of readers viewing this on other sorts of tablets being higher, etc

eyelovewe··on The home computer as a cultural object is physically vanishing (2007)
Per usual, clickbait polemics that propose absolutes cause controversy.

I realize that the comments here will largely be filled with people variously proposing that one do EVERYTHING with the iPad, and folks opposed to that. As this article is from 2007 and desktops are not extinct may I humbly suggest that a tablet device SUPPLEMENTS and COMPLEMENTS desktop and laptop computers running “full featured” operating systems (ones that allow you to manage files conveniently, for example, or configure the system as you wish it to be).

The question is not so much about processing power, but of form factors. A PCI(e) based audio interface is still superior to a USB one in latency and jitter, commodity RAM in standardized slots as an easy consumer upgrade, one can speak of the physical space required for proper USB ports if OTG and a zillion fragile dongles aren’t going to work for you.

The vast majority of content creators that I know, (including myself) use a tablet in conjunction with a traditional computer form factor. They use the tablet variously as a remote control, as an input device, and as a portable idea capturing device. It doesn’t replace a sound or video studio, it’s a welcome addition to one.

eyelovewe··on The home computer as a cultural object is physically vanishing (2007)
If you are suggesting that desktop computers will be replaced by tablets, I say NO. They are supplemented by them.

I have an earnest question, as I have had to resort to mounting an SMB share in “Files” app because iTunes is an insufferable PÓS: How can you access files on the device and transfer them to a computer, for example?

I think that proprietary platform limited software on iPad is not typically mature as a main video editor or DAW. I record audio and produce music, and while my iPhone and iPad are great for making midi sequences, and even though I CAN connect a usb audio interface, it’s clunky and the opposite of why I would use the device, aka on the train or away from home. I typically record my drum set or guitar or trumpet with a rather large setup involving a rackmount audio interface, hardware mic preamps of good quality, and let’s face it: drum sets are large.

I know many folks that use their tablet connected to their desktop DAW over the LAN to control parameters on a synth or effects processor. In live sound setups it’s a great remote. It’s not a replacement for a larger computer, and size and scale of peripherals and the tasks involved are large. The form factors have legitimately distinct purposes.

If flagging is abused to shut down civilly expressed imminent criticism, what is to stop me from just flagging everything I don’t like on HN? Is it not presumed that one is a good faith actor, at least initially? Are not downvotes also something one should be “reasonable” about, aka also requiring trust, community mindedness etc?

Shall HN turn into a subreddit per thread, as crowds defend post “territories”?

eyelovewe··on The Electrification of Everything
The fact is material and pertinent. It is absolutely objectively pertinent to whether the WSJ journal is earnestly acting in good faith with a long history of anti-electrification articles. Whether you AGREE with my assessment that, no they are not a good faith actor, is perhaps an open question. My flagged comment below expressed my OPINION that the WSJ is a bad faith actor in this topic, arguably Rupert Murdoch is responsible for much of climate change denialism. However, flagging a civilly expressed opinion that has a pertinent bearing on the thread is abusing flagging for the sake of suppressing criticism.
eyelovewe··on The Electrification of Everything
@dang, your moderation is needed here. I am being flagged unjustly
eyelovewe··on Some Americans are breaking out of political echo chambers
It seems to me that culture war posturing is one thing, a deliberate source of divisive power that some milk for outrage.

It seems to me that there are some issues with a clear right and wrong: the climate emergency. We essentially cannot overreact, we should be doing 309% of what we are currently doing to go zero carbon. In such a case as the “real world outside our society” id involved, it would seem that there are objectively right and wrong courses of action, in addition to many complex calculi that can have mixed value even if implemented with purely good faith and intentions. (Aka actual error)

It would seem that legions of conservative and prudent scientists from diverse fields are to be considered “political radicals” for merely telling the truth.

eyelovewe··on The pedantic checklist for changing your data model in a web application
It’s a very good topic. I currently use Ansible for deployment. I typically run the equivalent of a db migration as a custom application based upon a proven core, that, after extensive testing on copies of the production db, eventually runs against the production dB, as part of an orchestrated deployment. Verifying individual app nodes behaviors prior to moving onto the next is important, but also knowing the difference between data migrations that break old code vs ones that are agnostic, ak just make new data structures and slowly prune old ones, slowly meaning one or two deployments in the future, but before forgotten
eyelovewe··on Web Applications from the Future: A Database in the Browser
We had Meteor with “mini mongo” and you locally subscribed to streams and it was all a quite bloated PÓS IIRC. At some point someone will make a virtual browser that runs in the browser, or maybe a kubernetes that runs in the browser and the circle of ironic self referencing will be complete. Just replace the browser and use ports 80 and 443 and be done with it, instead of pretending that cpu cycles and RAM are free. The browser is not the app platform of the future, it’s the current bandaid solution is all. I also don’t agree that this article is well written. It exclusively addresses the world according to front end dev, mulch as graphql does. I’m sorry that coding elaborate stuff requires you to keep track of your elaborate stuff. Set your global var equal to the parsed xhr.result and redraw your GUI and get over it, IMO

eyelovewe··on Why are American workers becoming harder to find?
Let me know how your gig economy retirement plan goes. May you never have an accident on job. May you never need healthcare. I don’t see much future in such gig economy jobs. Our grandparents often worked for the same company all their lives. Your gig economy is a one way trap with no exit or promotional path. You have the equivalent of a fancy summer college kid job, but it’s not a career path.

eyelovewe··on Medium sees employee exits after CEO publishes ‘culture memo’
I’m still trying to figure out what Medium provides that a wordpress site or html webpage doesn’t provide. Oh that’s right, a boatload of bloat and a paywall. I tend to avoid Medium articles. The actual content tends to be as fluffy as the platform, these days. I’m not surprised that such a fluff engine produces leadership like this. Sinking ship, IMO. I have no basis for this beyond sentiment and observations.
