eyelovewe··on The Bezos backlash is bigger than Blue Origin’s success
I’m personally rather bored with the hobbies and tastes of these modern tech billionaires like Jeff and Elon. A few years back, there was a total global circumnavigation of the world in a solar powered 2 person airplane based in Switzerland, I forget the project name. This thing did not have to land to charge batteries but could stay aloft indefinitely, albeit at a very floppy wing surface area to weight ratio, and the resulting vulnerability to wind and low speed. Such a project or something that presents and actual investment that only a billionaire could provide are eschewed in favor of juvenile pissing contests like Mr. Branson and Mr. Bezos pursue
eyelovewe··on Programming by Poking: Why MIT Stopped Teaching SICP (2016)
To me, this reads as an admission that software complexity leads to lower determinacy and lower systemic coherence. That bottom up design is dead, at least with regards to the industry they are preparing people for. I still think that SICP teaches sound thinking, as do compositional agglomerative syncretic approaches, even if you never do write any systems in forth.

FOSS failed?

Chances are that it’s intimately involved in your client, my client, and the HN services

Last I checked, both major mobile platforms have their OS roots in FOSS, Linux and BSD, respectively.

eyelovewe··on We will win the war for general-purpose computing
Or not remove the configuration utility, in some cases. No one here asked for telepathy and amazing defaults, but take away my configurability and I get upset.
eyelovewe··on We will win the war for general-purpose computing
I think, rather, that parent posts were complaining that these manufacturers defaults were:

1) constantly changing Willy Nilly

2) less than useable, né breaking functionality

A proprietary OS has no obligation to care about your needs, but more importantly, does not allow you TO do anything about it.

This is why I am moving everything to FOSS over the long haul

Where does Linux fit into your story?

I hate new features in familiar applications. I think it’s marketing you are referring to, not consumer demand. While I’m only positing an anecdotal personal reaction, I’m also not seeing data behind the premise you proposed.

Slack is puzzling to me, as it’s a terrible product, IMO, which I feel bandwagoned from a few top down decisions by some larger companies to risk their essential internal communications on a third party proprietary app. It makes no sense to me and I would never specify it’s use on any team I lead.

eyelovewe··on Electric aircraft set to take flight by 2026 under new agreements
And that must and is changing. Green transport is predicated upon a green grid.

Additionally, a “wasteful” process, like electrolysis of water to make hydrogen, can be usefully inserted at onsite wind generation sites for when the grid isn’t requiring/buying vs sitting idle. When you see large wind turbines stopped and you know that there is a constant stream of wind at 50m above that ridge line it’s simply because the grid is not buying atm. I’m positing that aluminum air batteries are viable for aviation for the same reason.

eyelovewe··on Dividend Cripples Saudi Aramco
Cultural values that would mean MBS and the House of Saud loses face and honor. (And future access to money)
eyelovewe··on Dividend Cripples Saudi Aramco
It’s but a matter of positioning, IIRC BP has this slogan “beyond petroleum” and my guess is that MBS is not the most sensitive human, but rather one of those “impose your will at any cost” golden children who think they actually earned their status, etc, so I’m gonna chalk this up to incompetence meets ostentatious for 100 points, Alex

eyelovewe··on The Death of the Festival
Well that certainly added every ingredient in the kitchen. Who can argue with such a sprawling word associative piece of prose? I’m not entirely sure I understood the latent threat, nor do I see any attempt to apply these concepts to seriously “modernly” repressed societies, oh let’s just take North Korea. Are they all just going to socially explode? What are the concrete consequences of removing all dangerous festivals from society?
eyelovewe··on Don’t submit to conformity
Maybe everyone in America “knows” this already, but it’s an alien concept in much of Europe and Asia.
eyelovewe··on Don’t submit to conformity
Aesthetic revulsion at software bloat is the intuitively derived conclusion of logically derived facticity.

eyelovewe··on Automating programming: AI is transforming the coding of computer programs
That’s a very strange metaphor. How about giving plans away for a bathroom. Last I heard, integrating your app for you and doing it in house wasn’t part of putting a repo on GitHub
eyelovewe··on What does 100% mean in CSS? (2020)
That you have to redo it all the time, as in kitchen remodels.

Blame it on folks outside of dev? I would ban the word “modern” if possible. Everyone thinks that it’s obvious but no one seems to be able to define it once and for all, lol

eyelovewe··on BGP in a Nutshell
The pseudo formal notation says “look but don’t touch” when an actual example of the advertisement or message would clarify things. Additionally, providing context on BGP with respect to other routing protocols would be useful
eyelovewe··on The future of programming with certified program synthesis
Java and C# are not capable of programming hardware, in the sense that C and C++ are. There’s nothing “nonmodern” about C or C++ and LLVM was written in such a language that compiles to literal processor instructions. The JVM and dot net runtimes were also written in a lower level language with semantics for memory access via pointers. Despite all the hullabaloo about dangers and footguns, embedded dev, HALs, device drivers, OS schedulers and sundry all are written in C or C++. I’m not even bringing up garbage collection but it’s also a whole big dealbreaker for any low level systems programming. One cannot use malloc inside of boot code or inside of a low latency system call, etc

It turns out that Rust has gained some attention and is capable of operating in this space. The inertia of Linux kernel code needing to inter link and being largely in C is one reason why you don’t see random bits of Rust in Linux, but this is not to preclude designing low level systems in Rust.

eyelovewe··on Why a Chinese invasion of Taiwan would be a catastrophe for China and the world
I thought the standard argument was that demopublicans (ya know that publican thing ain’t nothing to brag about lol) aka bipartisans all agreed that the foreign war gig was good . Trumpian inconsistency ensures that a well timed Sabre rattle is perceived as indigestion. I doubt that emperor Xi was concerned. They know a thing or two about the futility of walls unlike our homegrown lot who still believe in King Santa Grinch
eyelovewe··on Nearly 80% of households in Lebanon don't have food or money to buy food
However if you reference it a decade earlier you find female rock bands smoking hashish after a gig, etc. I’ll not be so simplistic as to blame a particular power, but the place was dismantled, and didn’t just fall apart. Regardless of Roman and Ottoman provincial divisions, it ended up an accidental buffer zone. Bear in mind which group legs are required for a consensus government there and bear witness to ground zero of where Shia Sunni and Copt meet etc. and yes, when you see Lebanese in Israel it is due to them having to flee during the war as they had sided against Hezbollah. The Middle East is a complicated place but the complications are largely the result of trying winner take all policies on all sides, not to mention a fair dose of”enemy of my enemy is my frenemy” compounded with colonialism in onion layers and a distinct lack of shanti shanti all around.
eyelovewe··on Students flee field as computer 'fad fades' (1987)
I just want to add that technology is political. The directions specific entities push for become de facto standards. I have heard and seen many technical hiring staff express the idea that some technology or practice is wrong or obsolete when they are simply unaware of either the full picture or how the underlying tech works. There was a medium article that recently suggested that developer competence be measured by a number of standards that are quite obviously the result of the authors misperception about how web browsers, JavaScript, modern front end coding idioms, and modern front end build tool chains work. What was worse was the condescending disdainful tone the author had while they clearly had no idea what they were talking about.

Developers who understand the fundamentals of a particular area may not be ignorant of so-called developments in that area , but rather may be able to see where trends and modern approaches fail or lack. I know a Swiss developer who never used react in his life, but he coded up a rough approximation in an hour in front of me. He has his own tool belt, naturally. Would he be a good front end factory grunt? No. Smart companies use his services to design them tools.

eyelovewe··on Audacity may collect “Data necessary for law enforcement, litigation” and more
The bad actor in question has a known history of smash and grab “audacity” with copyright and guitar tablature, Ultimate Guitar. It sounds like some of the historically aggrieved parties need to get together and do something about these trolls
eyelovewe··on Audacity may collect “Data necessary for law enforcement, litigation” and more
Like loan sharks care about helping poor people. No thanks to predators offering help. Audacity ui worked fine for me for over a decade. Your opinion otherwise doesn’t justify such rapacious behavior on the part of Ultimate Guitar, who basically hijacked a community project for their own ends. Bad faith actor, and I’m having trouble seeing your comment as innocent. Who do you work for here? I find your association of good ui and telemetry to be highly suspect and certainly not logical. Feel free to correct my ignorance and elaborate on your strange proposal. NSA backdoors don’t make themselves, there’s always that special someone on every committee
eyelovewe··on Audacity may collect “Data necessary for law enforcement, litigation” and more
Audacity is a GPL licensed public domain offline audio editor. There is nothing to compel such a nebulous community driven software effort to behave as you suggest. Not everything is made by companies, you know. This community software is being hijacked by a slimy corporate operator who is doing things we don’t have to accept, as such a code license means that they are not the owners of the code, we are. All that is required is a telemetry-free fork and bad publicity and removal from distros for the bad corporate actor. Ultimate Guitar are bad actors. Denounce them. They certainly are cheeky, putting something they didn’t make out with a new skin that phones home.
eyelovewe··on Apple Makes Mac OS X Lion and Mountain Lion Free to Download
Great! So my 2011 mbp that originally came with Lion now won’t internet recovery earlier than High Sierra, I think it updated the firmware, but I would love to bring it back to Lion, as it was so much faster, heck Snow Leopard would be even better if possible. Use case: strictly offline running old audio software that I like better than new audio software
