I call this auto-colonialism. Certainly in the West (if not globally since as we know our “owners and masters” just met in Davos) there is clearly a super-layer that went ‘transnational’ and has been extracting wealth from its own people. And speaking of “own people” this is precisely why they do not give a flying F about “cultural heritage” and anything whatsoever that ‘conditions mind’ (such as national myths) that is not under their narrative control.
If you study history, you will note that the elite have always used mind control means to lord it over the masses. Our current crop can not even claim ‘noble blood’ or anything remotely like that so their strategy of exploitive rule is to pyschologically confuse (and upset) the subject population.
I’ll give you an example. The memes around certain words that were/are directly targeting the sexual vulnerabilities of white(-ish) young men, coupled with pornographic content to reinforce these social and sexual vulnerabilities. I mean, if I wanted to create ultra right wing shock troops, that is what I would do.
We’re being played. We’re being fucked with. Because the elite know they can not tell us the full scope of their ‘progressive plans’ for controlling their cattle on Human plantation.
So they have us fighing each other. It works. [edit: see sibling comments. The discussion immediately turns into a polarization around secondary effects, such as ‘welfare benefits’, etc. Meanwhile they are laughing their way to the bank. Oh wait, they own the banks ..]
p.s. am imigrant myself. Even I am upset at what they are doing to my new Western homeland. After all, I came here precisely for the cultural heritage that the elite decided to destroy over the past 3 decades. Ever since USSR fell...

It actually makes sense, doesn’t it? Heating the object adds energy constructively. In cooling, energy removed from one particle may in fact be absorbed again by neighboring particles, so it is not ‘efficient’. So I’d venture a guess at saying the object cools from outside until it is entirely cooled.
No one is afraid anymore so the ‘filter’ that selected ‘confirmed urbanites’ was lifted. The city reflects its new demographics. The OP and myself and the rest of urbanite that got a ‘buzz’ just walking in the city now mostly decamp to Brooklyn.
Speaking of Brooklyn, I must register my public approval of gentrification of Williamsburg. I actually lived in Williamsburg when the only (only) sign of civilization was a bagel shop next to the L. But let’s take Domino Park. That’s not ugly, is it?
So, two items: Money, and Taste. Now we people of ‘taste’ were priced out of Manhattan. And now you have what you have.
Let’s blame Giulliani for this. I never liked the man /g
p.s. and how could I forget. “Journalism” fleet street style, also England.
Been away from Java land for a while. How did something like that even get into release? That’s like a pretty big loaded shotgun to leave lying around with lots of kids playing, no?
It wants perm to “Access ip address and host information”. Why does no script want this?

This post of yours sent me looking for this and I ended up with (now reading) Agassi’s provocative (& brutal) takedown of this book. As to the content of the book, Agassi pointedly mentioned Weiner. I will of course read Weizenbaum after this. (thanks.)

p.s. continuing on, the review turns very positive. Initial vitriol apparently more related to the “two worlds” matter.
1: “very well”: methodology can help those without software design talent. You should stick to it if you know you can’t design software.
2: “don’t know”: Design can be learned but for the lazy there is methodology.

More generally, AI introduces yet another systemic mechanism for wealth extraction by the wealthy. The wealth here is creative power of the !wealthy. More sinister than the grand larceny by a thousand minor borrowings is the fact that meaning, ideals, motivating energy to move masses is taken away from the candidate pool — anyone of us can be the next demagogue, it’s not too late yet — which may include genuine thought leaders are going to be buried by the electric demagogue working for the proverbial man. “We need to hire more copyrighters for our propaganda using these ‘word processors’” becomes “Who could resist the onslaught of “our” creative efforts? Surrender now Dorothy.”
tldr:
Humanity has reached the absolute limit of the utility of ancient means of governance. New technology demands that we comprehensively review socio-economic order in society. Failure to do so will gift the current “winning” players in the ‘zero-sum-game’ of the du jour regime near guarantee of perpetual habitation in their very very special social perch.
