exolymph··on Roblox Studio boss: children making money on the platform isn't exploitation
> would be financially better off just using a standalone toolkit to make their own app and selling it on Itch or Gumroad.

Arguably not, because Roblox offers distribution. It's like selling on Amazon or Etsy — you give up an onerous-seeming cut to the platform, but people do it because a percentage of something is more than 100% of nothing.

exolymph··on Ask HN: Which tools are the best for internet safety for kids?
My kid is only 11 months old, but I worry about this a lot. My parents gave me all the talks that you're supposed to and attempted to supervise my online activities (though they were woefully out of their depth and I was very sneaky). Despite their best efforts, I still self-groomed via social media, then managed to find predators who were eager to take it to the next level.

exolymph··on The Divorce Colony (2015)
> Compare poor Asian Americans, who have very low divorce rates (similar to rich Asians), to poor whites, who have very high divorce rates. Poor Asian kids have double or triple the chance of becoming upper middle class as adults compared to poor whites.

I'm not pro-divorce, but it's difficult to isolate just one variable here. There are numerous other cultural differences.

exolymph··on Common infections can spark psychiatric illnesses in children
Nerd-sniped: Free will is an incoherent idea. We don't choose our preferences, which dictate our choices. (And even supposing you can choose a preference, that's only due to the preexisting desire to have such a preference. Turtles all the way down.) What would an unconstrained choice even be? Just random, arbitrary? That doesn't sound "free" either.

exolymph··on Tony Hsieh’s Friends/Family Milked Millions in His Drug-Fueled Final Months
A tragic tale. It is morbidly fascinating from the outside, the results of combining mental illness with lots of money. I hope his family and other loved ones can find peace and closure at some point.
