exolab··on Our position on open-weights models
It is pretty much what Suleyman describes in The Coming Wave as one of the measures we need to take to contain the risks of AI.

What Dario does not mention is that concentration in a few states or companies also poses a risk.

exolab··on Pac-Man, but you're the ghost
AI generated? The humanity!
exolab··on Conway's Game of Life, in real life
> I figured out what would be a reasonable amount to spend on the project and then multiplied that by 10.

I like the way you think.

exolab··on Cook: A simple CLI for orchestrating Claude Code
> So if you were to use the CLI to perform a review of some code. This tool would allow you to loop the output of the code review 5 times onto itself.

Claude already does that if you ask nicely.

exolab··on Launch HN: Nango (YC W23) – Source-available unified API
How does the "scale plan" work and how much is it?
exolab··on Blockchains explained visually (part 1 of 2)
Where is part 2? :)
exolab··on Show HN: TB-303 Synth, Drum Machine and Sequencer in Web Audio
You should take a look at Andre Michelle's work. https://www.audiotool.com/
exolab··on Show HN: Untrusted, a JavaScript adventure game you play by modifying its source
Just a hint: you can set your player's colour.
exolab··on Show HN: Unbabel API – Human Corrected Machine Translation
I just saw a machine-translated text that was given to a translator I know for "post-editing". Basically you have to delete everything that the machine translated and do it all over again.

If you want to offer that for 1 cent per word you are going to get exactly what you are paying for. 90% of qualified translators are bad enough that I would never let them translate anything for me. I cannot imagine the remaining 10% will work for 1 ct/word.

exolab··on Why I stopped using the phrase “This is not rocket science.”
That is probably the reason new models are en vogue every other decade.
exolab··on Show HN: Add 3D gestures to your applications
Could you be a little more precise?
exolab··on Lockitron: $500K of Reservations in One Day
Nice product, nice website, nice video. But I wager not many people want to see chest hair in a commercial video.
exolab··on Functional Programming Principles in Scala starts today
I don't really care about Karma on this site (mine or other people's). If I did I certainly would have checked this comment earlier ;)

If people post for Karma instead of for content, IMHO it is their problem. It won't make the site much better, but it won't make it much worse, either.

"Shame on you" was my way of saying "who cares?".

exolab··on Show HN: Bubbles - my unfinished HTML5 Particle Game
a) Far too difficult b) Addictive c) Ouch, my fingers.
exolab··on Functional Programming Principles in Scala starts today
Shame on you.
exolab··on RIP Andre Hedrick: The engineer who kept the PC open
I don't think other people in similar situations are helped by you period.
exolab··on Just pay me.
I would never work with anyone who even proposes such terms. Not because I don't want to pay on time (we always do) but because those terms are unprofessional, to put it mildly. If you want to be treated like a pro, act like one.

Update: Having looked at your resumé, I probably wouldn't work with you anyway.

exolab··on "therefore, starting now, waffles are now $450.00 each"
True. And I think the way Groupon handles this is unjustifiable. I still think that you should be able to work "out of pockets" for at least 3 months. If you can't do that, why start a business? Seems very risky...
exolab··on 17 Year Old Builds a Better Search Engine
I think he wasn't very good. He was obviously underprepared, or he would have had a couple of nicely phrased questions in his head. For a media professional, he was just too inarticulate.
exolab··on Show HN: gist.io, blogless writing for hackers
Please tell me that the end of your scale of permanence with regard to writing isn't blogs :)
exolab··on Live CERN Higgs Announcement in 20 Mins
I am having a lot of fun watching this, although I don't understand a single word of what he is saying :D
exolab··on Dial-up modem sound slowed 700% is 100% creepy

exolab··on Recursive Drawing
Pure genius.
exolab··on Show HN: Tired of entering map directions on iPhone? I've streamlined it
I don't really see the point. Getting from my favourite places to my favourite places I usually don't need a map.
exolab··on 5 years away from programming, boy have things changed
I never use it, but Safari's Reader will actually make the text readable with no need for an additional tool.
exolab··on Watching Apple win
Bad case of fan-boyism. Go see a doctor.

JFTR: I like many Apple products, but come on.

exolab··on An Ad Blocker Opens the Gate, Ever So Slightly
There are size-limits on ads. Actually there have always (read: for the last 10+ years) been limits. Also, ad servers are usually rigorously tested with regards to performance, speed etc.

Not all sites enforce these limits, but major publishers are very aware of users' interests.

The problem is that if you visit an average website, there will probably be 20+ servers involved in serving the page, the javascripts, analytics, ads, etc.

One of those systems occasionally underperforms, which would not be a problem if everything but the main content was simply loaded asynchronously, possibly in the order of importance a website owner attaches to each content type.
