exlurker··on Ask HN: I have $450K cash, what should I do to maximize my return?
Looking over the wiki so far, looks like a great resource. Thank you!

Disqus? Just joking. Any good alternatives?
exlurker··on Making a miniature IBM 1401 scale model
This is what the internet is made for. Beautiful, skilled, passionate. Wow!
exlurker··on Guerrilla Public Service Redux (2017)
Lovely, funny story!
exlurker··on The Vanishing Of Ashlar: 4kb demo using GPU for sound and pathtracing
It actually started on the C64, as a by-product of game cracking. People would first add their "handles" into cracked games, then some small intros before the game. These intros soon became competetive, and were made stand-alone, known as demos. There was some overlap of game and demo-scene, but not much until around 1992 or so, on the Amiga.
exlurker··on Zork source code, 1977
Thank you for that, very interesting read!
exlurker··on Ask HN: Anyone else feeling HN posts quality dropping down?
The tech posts are mostly good - politics are too US-centric, no surprise. Quality of comments going down, for sure. There's an abundance of "libertarian" views. Make of that what you will, but when you see it enough, you know the conversation here is dominated by a lot of young techies spending most of their days in a bubble.
exlurker··on Finland adds the demoscene as a UNESCO intangible world cultural heritage
This weekend I was lucky enough to witness Revision 2020 demo compos on Twitch. It was really a warming experience, as I'm an old-gen scener myself. Still some familiar names (e.g. Jogeir, Romeo Knight) out there producing top-notch stuff!
exlurker··on Ask HN: Is HN a ‘healthy online community’? I’m doing a case study for a class
Agreed. I think it's a combination of maturity in the participants (the symbolic $5 helps here), and also tough but fair moderating really helps.
exlurker··on Ask HN: Utility for syncing a folder across two devices?
Agreed with syncthing. I replaced Dropbox on my devices, but it's not as simple to set up, for sure. But it works, when you get it up.
exlurker··on Gmail of an old man with 0 mails blocked
Sad story, indeed :( I'm currently slowly, but steadily migrating to fastmail, and I can feel the burden off my shoulders each service i re-reroute.

I hope this gets resolved soon, I also recommend switching mail providers.

exlurker··on Ask HN: Search engines as good as “old Google” for finding information?
I feel you. And I hope someone, somewhere is working on a search engine for personal websites only...
exlurker··on To everything there is a season – 8tracks streaming service shutting down
Tip for medium haters on Firefox: Click the link, ignore the popups, hit F9.
exlurker··on VVVVVV’s source code is now public, 10 year anniversary jam happening now
Pico8 for you, if you're OK with a retro look. Very quick and satisfying. :)
exlurker··on The Polygons of Another World
The magic of CRT :)
exlurker··on Using Binary Space Partitioning in Doom
It's nice if you could link us a good article on the guy, I'd love to read it.
exlurker··on The making of E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, the “worst” video game
Possibly auto-corrected "very"
exlurker··on Show HN: Space Invaders in C
Thank you for this, amazing labour of love! And this article really gets my mind churning ... :)
exlurker··on Ask HN: What is the ops architecture like for AAA multiplayer game servers?
I found this article very enlightening: https://www.gabrielgambetta.com/client-server-game-architect...
exlurker··on Alcohol Belts of Europe
Yes, generally speaking, the northern countries have had very strict restrictions on alcohol, which somehow developed an unhealthy attitude in that, once your job is over on friday, get as drunk as fast as possible, preferably until sunday.

But it's changing - now there's an appreciation of the taste of good wines, craft beers and liquors during the week, although still going hardcore during the weekend.

I don't know if it's for the better, but it's changing.

exlurker··on Dan Bunten and M.U.L.E. (2013)
The music is very catchy, indeed: http://deepsid.chordian.net/?file=/GAMES/M-R/M_U_L_E.sid
exlurker··on Habitat (video game)
Be sure to look at F. Randall Farmer's articles under "Literature", really fascinating and entertaining!

exlurker··on Some items from my “reliability list”
SRE: Site Reliability Engineer
exlurker··on IT Runs on Java 8
Hehe... Cool, I'm a "dark matter developer" and I like it. Edit: Because of downvotes, I'll expand a bit for more interesting comment. I work in a pretty large corp. as a developer, and solve a lot of smaller day-to-day business problems - let's say it begins with Excel and ends with a web form. I also set up the server, database and anything else I need on Azure in co-operation with our (very big) IT provider. I find it quite interesting, but my workday ends at 16.
exlurker··on Have a personal web site
In addition, there should be a search site that only indexes personal web sites.
exlurker··on Setting Up a Pi Hole Made My Home Network Faster
Yes, yes, yes, yes! I dream about the same thing. And an overlay with a light gun to shoot holes in whatever's on. And this device could do some processing, like SETI, or whatever other useful thing.
