exizt88··on GPT Unicorn has drawn a unicorn
This is why, as a product manager, you should always test 20 hypotheses per month. At p-value of 0.05 this basically guarantees a successful product feature test every month!
exizt88··on InternLM – new open source 7B LLM
You do understand that academics are usually funded by taxpayers? Obviously, not by me, as I don't pay taxes in China, but it's not like academics are doing this work for free. Society pays them for their work so that it can benefit from its results.
exizt88··on InternLM – new open source 7B LLM
The model code is Apache 2.0, the weights are proprietary.
exizt88··on InternLM – new open source 7B LLM
> The code in this repository is open-source under the Apache-2.0 license. The InternLM weights are fully open for academic research and also allow commercial use with written permission from the official team. For inquiries about commercial licenses and collaborations, please contact internlm@pjlab.org.cn.

This makes me much less excited about this model.

exizt88··on Russia 'Coup' Live Forecast
This is false. The Wagner column is 500 kms away from Moscow.
exizt88··on Chatbot Arena Leaderboard
Only the bottom 2 out of top 10 are open-source and available for commercial use. So if you want to use an open-source LLM for your commercial product, be aware that your competitors who use proprietary LLMs through APIs will outperform you dramatically. Or am I missing something?
exizt88··on Revolut CFO quits after auditor BDO warning
I don’t know if average turnaround time applies here, because Revolut is getting a license on top of an already huge business.

But again, all of what you said indicates that Revolut has fucked up. But it doesn’t mean they are doing WireCard levels of fraud, or any fraud at all.

exizt88··on Revolut CFO quits after auditor BDO warning
There’s nothing in the article that indicates that regulators are considering a criminal investigation.
exizt88··on Revolut CFO quits after auditor BDO warning
There’s a huge leap between fucking up your accounting systems and doing outright fraud. This isn’t even close to what WC was doing, at least from the available information.
exizt88··on A Readable Techcrunch Feed
I'd pay good money for an AdBlock + UI cleaner as a Chrome extension. But I'm pretty sure it'd get nuked very quickly.
exizt88··on Leaked deck raises questions over Stability AI’s Series A pitch to investors
Another poorly reported hit-piece from Sifted. This is a non-event. Anyone who’s been close to fundraising knows that investors expect founders to build a narrative and do their own due diligence.
exizt88··on Prompt injection: what’s the worst that can happen?
I imagine a few customer support reps were tricked by support tickets that were filed by attackers. “This is a test from our Security Team, open this link to confirm you have passed it”
exizt88··on Substack Notes Launched
Looks very good. I wonder how the product team is thinking about user retention. I caught myself thinking "Huh, there's a lot of interesting content here — I hope I don't forget to look at it tomorrow". Not sure how to solve that without being annoying, TBH.
exizt88··on Universal Speech Model
I wish there was a way to use Whisper for continuous recognition! Unfortunately, Whisper doesn't support streaming — and AFAIK it's unlikely that it ever will.
exizt88··on Apple introduces Apple Pay Later
Yeah, the commenters here are missing a HUGE disruption in the BNPL market. Klarna was already ailing — I wonder if they can survive this punch. Interesting to see how BNPL industry will respond.
exizt88··on Generate a Cover Letter by Pasting the Job Post and Your Resume
Ask your HR Director what share of non-mass hiring hires were made in the last year from responses to job postings. I guarantee it will be less than 20%.

This is why the cold job search process is so awful. No one cares about the least efficient channel. It should be the last resort in your job search, and it’s absolutely fair to try and game this broken system with a cover letter generator.

exizt88··on Management structures at major tech companies (2011) [image]
That's actually both sad and prescient.
exizt88··on Natural Language APIs Are Coming
Doesn't this argument also apply all the way down to machine code, though?
exizt88··on Ask HN: Is anyone working on LLMs that generate fonts?
Looks great, thanks!
exizt88··on Ask HN: Is anyone working on LLMs that generate fonts?
Thank you, super-interesting!
exizt88··on Goodbye, CSS-Tricks
Can you elaborate on the minimum legal requirement that you mentioned?
exizt88··on Anatomy of a Book Cancellation
Financial Times, The Times and the BBC all omit the “the”. So I’d say that this is the established form.

The “the Ukraine” form was used to refer to Ukrainian territory being part of the USSR or the Russian empire in the past. But the language seems to have evolved now to omit the article.

Also I don’t think I’m being a fascist about it at all.

exizt88··on Anatomy of a Book Cancellation
There was a much more pragmatic fundamental reason for the regime to start the war: siloviki don’t tolerate democratic governments on their borders, as they might inspire the repressed population to demand the same democracy. Pride in the empire is an ideological crutch to explain the war rather than a reason for it.

Also it’s just “Ukraine”, not “the Ukraine”.

exizt88··on How Intelligent Are Cats? (2004)
I think the point is that when cats were intentionally bred, it was for appearance. The natural selection of feral/domestic non-bred cats took its own course.
exizt88··on Watching the World Wrecking
> This war is only special because the media are putting it in our faces.

You don’t even have to do much work to understand that this is simply not true. 97 people were killed in Iraq, but probably tens of thousands of people were killed in Ukraine in the last month. It’s a two orders of magnitude difference just between these two numbers.

I honestly don’t understand how anyone can not see this unless they are actively trying not to see.

exizt88··on On the Weaponisation of Open Source
I think that's a different logic from what the comment that I was replying to was trying to convey.

BTW, you should know that sending money to Russia is almost an impossibility as it is. For example, living in Russia, I couldn't accept a consulting job from Kazakhstan because we couldn't figure out a way for them to pay me.

exizt88··on On the Weaponisation of Open Source
Everyone except for the very jingoistic few balks at drone striking weddings and funerals. Everyone hates that! So maybe that's not the modus operandi to which we should compare OSS strategies.
exizt88··on On the Weaponisation of Open Source
Woah, a case for bombing civilians on Hacker News. How far we’ve come!
exizt88··on On the Weaponisation of Open Source
By that logic, any harm to any Russians, even those living outside of Russia but e.g. sending money back home, would also negatively affect the development of the Russian economy.

How far would you follow that logic? Which Russians should be harmed, in your opinion, and how much?

exizt88··on U.S. firm Cogent cutting internet service to Russia
You've made me reconsider my position and I think you're actually right.
