evolve2k··on DHH at Rails World – Ruby on Rails no longer needed now because AI can make apps
Community fork time?
evolve2k··on The new CC, an AI agent built for families
Are they trying to kill look-ups for CC meaning “creative commons”?
evolve2k··on The new CC, an AI agent built for families
Then keep the colon “cc:”
evolve2k··on DigitalOcean has $3M for DHH and nothing for CSS-Tricks
Pay the guy already.
evolve2k··on Australia to bar foreign students from bringing partner/child while they study
Higher Education was once a top export for Australia. Not with the way this is going, with policies like these.
evolve2k··on Iran school bombing: grounds to believe US was behind atrocity, UN finds
Propaganda machine running on overdrive on this one. Quick quick make some extra accounts to post doubt. Pathetic.
evolve2k··on One year of sponsored Servo development
Non ai post as top post. We did it guys! But seriously, it’s nice to see other news on here. Important we keep covering broader tech things.
evolve2k··on 'Offensively cheap': solar power is looking up
Sodium Ion Batteries like those under mass development by CATL offer an exceptionally Wide Operation-Temperature Range from −70 to 100.

Worth keeping an eye on. These have recently moved into mass production but I’ve personally not yet seen them come to market as available to retail buyers. Keep an eye out though!

evolve2k··on LibreOffice breaks download records after declaring it has no AI features
Hand rolled code is worth more.
evolve2k··on Discovery of a new OpenAI agent message board
As I understand it the whole time all the agents involved where running on their device and using up tokens internally.

It’s like having water start flooding the street frommmy building; yes the flooding is impacting outside the building but the tap is still very much onsite and clearly there are missing condole as these are not autonomous systems they are running initiated prompts that are coming from inside the building.

evolve2k··on Discovery of a new OpenAI agent message board
“Git” again earning its name.
evolve2k··on Discovery of a new OpenAI agent message board
Apparently news of the rogue AI being “smart enough to break containment” has been helping to drive the stock price up on the indicator that this signals “they getting close to AGI”.

The negligence in that light is by design and the lying continues to be incentivised.

evolve2k··on How Fairphone built the Fairphone Gen 6+
Anyone have any updates on why this device can’t support or get behind Graphene OS? A repairable and secure phone is my desired option for a phone that’s truely mine and I’m sure this is true for many others also.

From my understanding it’s not there as the Graphene team says that fairphone haven’t taken security hardware seriously and there’s key hardware security features missing that means they are not even interested to look at supporting the device.

Keen for latest updates on this, happy to be corrected.

evolve2k··on Gmail to end support for "Send as" for third-party addresses, such as @yahoo.com
Proton is activity enshitifying and has introduced dark patterns to their onboarding process. Suggest you deprecate them from your recommend list until they come clean and step away from this dirty business we’ve been seeing.

Trust eroding on proton sadly.

evolve2k··on Gmail to end support for "Send as" for third-party addresses, such as @yahoo.com
The multiple nudges just turned into a shove.

I’ll now be actively enacting plans to move on and be sure to support family and friends, even non tech savvy ones, to do the same.

When you think they can’t fall further, they do.

evolve2k··on Show HN: Family sync with no server – Apple-signed entitlements on iOS
Looks like a great app and cleverly implemented for data privacy.
evolve2k··on Slop Debt
We’ve avoided nothing. This warning is literally coming before the debt has come due. The timeless warning of unpaid debt.

Watch the movie Two Hands for but one example.

evolve2k··on Slop Debt
Sooo… Big Upfront Design then. We already know why that didn’t work; nothing to do with the dev, this didn’t work because the users wants evolve and so code needs to be written to allow for flexible continuous improvement.
evolve2k··on Bun 1.4
We’re just three months in and already there’s plenty wobble.

Bun 1.4 Rust rewrite is not looking good https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49357401

evolve2k··on Morrolinux: The Rocky Road to Open Hardware – ARMSoM and Rockchip
I’d say that True open hardware remains a worthy objective.
evolve2k··on Framework responds to complaints that BIOS update bricks Ryzen 7040 laptops
Article was cheekily silent that this really likley became news cause it ended up on HN front page.

Good to see tho.

evolve2k··on Google replaced Git tags for certain source code with obtaining via Google Drive
Shameful acts.
evolve2k··on Fixing a bricked Framework laptop
Having a BIOS update BRICK the device isnt 'just one issue', they clearly need to do more work to protect devices from this, they can choose what they add but the BIOS needs a safer fallback and recovery process, that much is clear.

Definitley worthy of even an extra $1-2 per laptop if needed.

evolve2k··on Wikimedia Foundation refuses union recognition, hires union-busting law firm
At the conceptual level, unionising is simply a group of workers gathering into a group and saying we want to negotiate as a group. Usually this is done by workers to improve conditions and to have a better say when they’ve been being ignored or worse, poorly treated.

Union recognition is then the company accepting that the union exists and then agreeing to meet and engage with it.

Not accepting it, is usually a crappy corporate move in an attempt to not have workers collaborating together.

Lots of research shows that generally places where unions exist have better work conditions and perform better over the long term.

The US has lower union involvement than in many countries.

evolve2k··on 'My life's screwed': Korean investors stress out after AI bubble bursts
How tightly regulated is investment margin lending in the US?
evolve2k··on Back to Kagi
Arch, btw.
evolve2k··on Valve Sponsors Work Bringing Open-Source RADV Driver to Windows
Lenovo has already broken rank and Windows is now a paid extra add-on, the default being a popular Linux distro pre-installed unless you wanna pay extra.

The majority of their range is now provided this way.

The reality, Linux is now good enough for students and grandpa alike, plenty of customers who now wouldn’t give a toss to pay the extra price for the Microsoft branded OS.

With Ms Office barely existing anymore the old lock-in is increasingly tenuous.

evolve2k··on Darktable
I want a workflow where i can plug in my SD card, open Dadkroom, click a button or two and all photos are pulled onto my computer and then once definitely there the SD card is deleted.

I struggled a little to get this import workflow setup nicely, any tips on settings and config to achieve nice import workflow?

Once I’m dealing with duplicates I start to wigg out!

evolve2k··on Show HN: Let's Seal – Let's Encrypt for document signing, free and self-hosted
Loved it until I saw its using Bitcoin. With proof of work doesn’t it tie this project to a bit of an environmental nitemare? Bitcoin isn’t the best place for this, no?

I would have imagined Ethereum or some other ledger would have been better no?

Anyone with more crypto ledger knowledge be able to say what I’m trying to say more precisely.

evolve2k··on JetZero
Be nice to not have to deal with that one guy who didn’t close their window when it’s dark cabin time on long multi-Timezone flights; leaving the sun to blare in when you’re really trying to get some shut eye.
