evoltix··on Ask HN: Developers with kids, how do you skill up?
It's all about finding a routine and following it as closely as possible, and adapting as needed. For me, it's at night when everyone is asleep.

Family is the most important. Cherish every moment. Reflect on those cherished moments. Time is but a fleeting thing.

evoltix··on Project delays: why good software estimates are impossible
Do you have a source for this equation or did you derive this yourself?
evoltix··on Project delays: why good software estimates are impossible
True. But it does no good if management is dismissive. But that's another problem outside of the topic of estimating.

> And the best thing is if they then get 'their 10x code slinger' who does it indeed very fast, sends the code back to you and you are stuck with something akin to a broken toilet with diarrhea coming out the sides

A grim picture to think about but I find this to be true a lot of the time.

evoltix··on Project delays: why good software estimates are impossible
Another thing to note here that I have experienced is when management has an incompetent mentality that, for a given project, that all tasks for this project are created equal. For example, they expect that if task X took 1 hour that surely task Y will also take 1 hour despite the fact that task X and task Y vary greatly in complexity.
evoltix··on Introducing Stack Overflow Documentation Beta
I would definitely be interested in this as well.
evoltix··on Stealing Facebook access_tokens using CSRF in device login flow
Out of curiosity, was there any particular reason why you decided to write a blog post about this vulnerability 5 months after the bug was fixed?
evoltix··on What are your rabbit holes on the internet? (For instance, HN one we all share)
Currently, most of the links within this thread are becoming rabbit holes for me.
evoltix··on Code Is Never “Perfect”, Code Is Only Ever “Good Enough”
I try to follow this mantra from Kent Beck: "Make it work. Make it right. Make it fast."

I find that most of the development environments that I have worked in, the focus usually ends up being on getting new features completed in order to help facilitate the sales department to make sales. It's a never-ending cycle that will gradually accumulate technical debt such that pushing new features out the door will eventually come to a halt.

Yes, I agree that code can never truly be perfect. However, as developers we should always strive to make our code better.

evoltix··on Letting go
Since when do you have to be productive when hanging out with friends?
evoltix··on BitTorrent’s Secure Dropbox Alternative Goes Public
Good point.

Not sure if this has anything to do with it but by default, "Use relay server when required" is checked for each folder you share. But I would hope that it doesn't go through a relay server all the time.

evoltix··on BitTorrent’s Secure Dropbox Alternative Goes Public
I wonder how this will affect Space Monkey. Thoughts?
evoltix··on Ask HN: Any advice for a lead developer starting a new development team?
Great video. I really enjoyed it.
evoltix··on Ask HN: Any advice for a lead developer starting a new development team?
Could you elaborate on letting them pick their own hardware?
evoltix··on Show HN: clipboard.com, the best way to save anything online
Obviously there's no obligation. It was just a smug move to decline to share the price.
evoltix··on REST is over
I think the term "hypermedia" will catch on just like REST did. People will begin to slap on the hypermedia label to their APIs whether or not they are true hypermedia APIs. Developing hypermedia APIs will be the new craze until some other revolutionary terminology is introduced to describe yet another way to correctly develop APIs.
evoltix··on The desks of 37signals
Nice setup. I think it depends on your line of work and personal preference.
evoltix··on The desks of 37signals
I think the one major thing that sticks out in these photos is that all these people work from home or some other remote location. Everyone's work space has a relaxed and zen-like feeling to it.
evoltix··on Show HN: Hackershelf. Community curated collection of legally free books
Maybe you should delete ones that have fewer points :)
evoltix··on Show HN: Hackershelf. Community curated collection of legally free books
I submitted a dupe and wanted to remove it but couldn't find that option.
evoltix··on How Your Cat Is Making You Crazy
The article is very interesting but seems to inflate the fact that if you have a cat you're most likely going to contract T. gondii.

If indoor cats don't carry T. gondii and outdoor cats only carry the parasite for three weeks of their life, isn't the risk of getting this parasite very low since there is only a three week window? Perhaps I'm misinterpreting this. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

evoltix··on Stop reading this blog and learn something
When it comes to programming books, I tend to prefer paper-based books versus e-books.

With paper-based book it's easier for me to flip back and forth through the book to quickly reference something. Also, reading code snippets is a whole lot easier since you don't have to worry about screen size messing up the code readability and formatting.

evoltix··on Why Startups Could Use .NET, But Don’t
Same here. :)
evoltix··on Why Startups Could Use .NET, But Don’t
Programmers may indeed lean toward using PHP, Python, or Ruby because of a cultural influence but I truly believe that the deciding factor is cost. New startups typically can't afford to use .NET because of the expense of licensing IDEs, MSSQL instances, etc.

I do agree that programmers should be generalists so they can quickly adapt to new languages and frameworks.

evoltix··on Poll: Did you transfer your domains from GoDaddy today?
Over the past year I have been slowly migrating my domains from GoDaddy to Hover. Best decision ever.
evoltix··on CoffeeScript is not a language worth learning
The title is still misleading. It doesn't become clear that the author is advocating CoffeeScript until the end of the article.
evoltix··on At the End of a Procrastinated Day
I find that writing things down on paper in a divide-and-conquer fashion really help in battling procrastination.
evoltix··on How I Made $19,000 on the App Store While Learning to Code
Great job.

Although, I'm particularly interested in how you made the decision to quit your full-time job and create a startup based on one-time sales? Is there a service behind this startup?

evoltix··on Are We in Lust With in Startups?
I could see how the majority of people are "in lust" rather than "in love" with startups because of the opportunities they present. Independence, self-sustainability, and escape from the corporate world are all things I think certain people lust for.
evoltix··on Tangle is a JavaScript library for creating reactive documents.
Funny how this submission got more attention than the one 9 days ago.
evoltix··on HP begins TouchPad clearance with $99 fire sale
Yep. You can't beat a $99 tablet that has a colored Kindle app.
