Oh wow. This would be excellent for language dependencies - ruby gems, node_modules, etc. Integrating this with something like pnpm [1], which already keeps a global store of dependencies would excellent. [1] - https://pnpm.js.org

evantahler··on Randy Pausch Last Lecture: Achieving Your Childhood Dreams (2007) [video]
Previous CMU/ETC student here - I was lucky enough to be there, and I still remember it.

I was a student at the ETC that year, and it was the first year Randy wasn't teaching, as he was sick. I hadn't met him yet, but the reverence the second-year students had for him was more than enough to convince the whole department to attend. I'm so glad I did. The values and ethics he built into the ETC made it a truly amazing place, and was great to hear his story.

As we are on a forum for startups - I sometimes think about how Randy might have been sharing his Mission/Vision/Values with us, but by other names; how his personal beliefs could be imbued into his lessons and the department itself. He did an amazing job.

Seriously - watch the video. You'll be inspired. You'll cry. You'll want to program really odd VR games just for fun :D

Grouparoo | Senior Full Stack Engineer / Founding Engineer | Full-Time | Remote - USA

Grouparoo is a venture-backed software company building the open-source framework for managing, syncing, and syndicating data between your app(s) and all the marketing and operations tools your company needs to run. Do you need to keep your product database in-sync with Hubspot, Salesforce or Zendesk? Do you want to limit the PII that leaves your firewall but still build robust email-marketing cohorts to use in Mailchimp or Marketo? Do you want to experiment with new definitions of who “high LTV customers about to churn” are, and try new ways to re-engage them? That’s what Grouparoo does.

We are a small team looking for generalist engineers who are interested in Open Source, Javascript/Typescript, and connecting the world's data. Learn more about the position @ www.grouparoo.com/jobs

I’ve been a beta user for a while, and it’s been awesome - I’ve been hosting node.js sites on my phone! But... the version that made it into the App Store had ‘apk’ removed.... it’s going to be harder now to install stuff

Grouparoo (https://www.grouparoo.com/) is a venture-backed software company building the open-source framework for managing, syncing, and syndicating data between your app(s) and all the marketing and operations tools your company needs to run. Do you need to keep your product data (Postgres) in-sync with Hubspot, Marketo and Zendesk? Do you want to limit the PII that leaves your firewall but still build robust email-marketing cohorts to use in Mailchimp? Do you want to enable your Marketing team to experiment with new definitions of what “high LTV customers” are, and try new ways to re-engage them… without you needing to write any code? That’s what Grouparoo does.

As our first hire, you’ll be a Founding Engineer at Grouparoo. You will be responsible for helping to craft the roadmap, developing features, fixing bugs, and building products that make our customers happy. We are a small team, and so we are looking for generalist engineers who are interested in learning about a wide variety of tools and technologies rather than becoming experts in any one part of the stack. We connect many different APIs, databases, and vendors, so there’s always something new to learn.

Grouparoo | Senior Full Stack Engineer - Founding Engineer | Full-Time | Remote - USA

Grouparoo is a venture-backed software company building open source data infrastructure that make data reliable, accessible, and actionable. Our aim is to make a no-code tool for business users to understand and take action on their customer data, while making it easy for technical users to install and maintain. Funded by top-tier investors, Grouparoo is creating open-core applications to simplify and automate the data syncing process within companies, solving both technical and organizational challenges.

As our first hire, you’ll be responsible for helping to craft the roadmap, developing features, fixing bugs, and building products that make our customers happy. We are a small team, and so we are looking for generalist engineers who are interested in learning about a wide variety of tools and technologies rather than becoming experts in any one part of the stack. We connect many different APIs, databases, and vendors, so there’s always something new to learn.

We work in the open using an XP-inspired, open-source process driven by Stories and Pull Requests. Grouparoo is written in Typescript, and we use React, Actionhero, and Next.js as our major building blocks. Since we are building tools for others to use, we care a lot about the developer experience and how easy it is to install and run our products.

evantahler··on There Are No Bugs, Just TODOs
There’s a great tool - pivotal tracker - that acts in the way that the author describes. It’s great because it’s opinionated.

It also includes pretty good PM tools like burn down charts, predicted velocity, etc.

I've seen a number of news RSS feeds that only give you the first paragraph or a summary in RSS, and to get the rest, you need to log into the site (paywall). I think this is quite an OK RSS business model - it's like a preview, and you pay to get the rest.

evantahler··on Changes to accessing and using Geolite2 databases
This is fascinating and I’m sure will have lots of far-reaching effects for the courts to chew on... For example, do I “own” the IP address that my ISP assigned me? Is it really my PII? If enough people ask to be removed, have I harmed the ISPs property? What about dynamic IPs? I like that I know have the power to opt-out... but will it last?

As a developer, thinking about this is a great mental exercise for switching my thinking from “use public datasets” to “use user opt-in data” - what would I have used IP->GEO info for before? Guessing a user’s language? I can use Accept headers. Guessing a user’s real location? Better to use the web/mobile GPS api and get explicit consent. I guess the internal maps we make from our server logs will get less accurate... fine?

evantahler··on A podcast that hacks Ring camera owners live
This is a tech community, and I like tech metaphors - it’s like old CCTVs were inside the firewall and these new services our outside the firewall. In the old model, sharing your data (videos) was opt in each time. You could be sure that only you had access to the data unless you chose to share it. In the new model, you are always sharing, and these hacks show you don’t really even know who you are sharing with.

Because of redundancies in the US system, there are like 5:1 administrators for each doctor. That’s a huge source of the costs.

Medicare for all will likely cut a lot of those jobs to gain the savings. This show talks about if that’s good or bad for society.

evantahler··on How we reduced deployment times by 95%
Cool! I’m curious if this is something that nodemon/pm2 could do as task runners. You could call “npm update” and then hup your process...

This is sort of how Capistrano handled deployments, changing a symlink to all project deps and then signaling the process to reload

evantahler··on How we reduced deployment times by 95%
Pretty cool! Actionhero uses the ‘require cache’ trick in development mode to hot-reload your changes as you go. It’s risky in that even though you’ve change the required file, you may not have recreated all you objects again. For that reason Actinhero doesn’t allow this is NodeEnv is anything besides development.
