is there a law i must always contribute 2 million paragraphs to show my opinion?
It's natural investments may turn out wrong. Especially when expectations are larger than the potential, which is what happens..
He can do whatever he wants with his free time. I don't care. But telling everyone that is pointless if you don't solve a computer science problem, he is really illusionating himself. And raising his recomendation engine as the ultimate computer science problem is really ridicilus.
I will put it this way:
It was said during the International Symposium in Computer Architecture this year, although, i'd be mistaken who said it. I think it was put something like this to the crowd:
"We asked teenagers to tell us what is the most significant discovery. Their answer? YouTube That's what happened, we've gone so far with technology that we neglected what is important to the people."
by the way his idea is already implemented by others: www.feeds2.com
"All these companies will keep getting bought up, but the acquirers are not going to see great returns."
gettting acquired without the potential of revenue? show us these dump acquirers, others would be interested too!
he sais he likes companies like Joost, that have real technology behind them. Yeah, it also has 100 employees.
But in the future there be a place that will concentrate and host those people ready to build this ecosystem.
It's more a culture problem Europe is facing. There may be ventures geographically descentralized that succeed but they wont be concentrated anytime soon, because there arent enough attempts and often the very comptetent people move to US.
The huge irony is Loic Le Meur, the French guy who is hosting LeWeb3, who is supposed to be working towards that purpose. Interestingly enough, his new startup is now in San Fransisco..
p.s. even if the beach is cold, I guess the sun is there and the lifestyle and life is non-stop, and must have been a catalyst in the beggining when Silicon Vally began to attract people. Anyhow, of what I now real estate was pretty cheap even 25 years ago, which must have been a very important role. Paris is already big and expensive and cloudy. London the same. Cities in Germany the same.
The people and the prices are not startup friendly.
Everybody loves sun and beaches!
depends of the content of the site, thus the user type.
And there are a tons of reasons that make it clear to a technology person, that bussiness persons will ignore and some will get the money and others lose big.
Google is nearly impossible to replicate where as social networks is and will always be a trend. Also people tend to use more than one of these social networks.
PG pondered once in one of his essays, if I remember correctly, that naturally myspace or any other current social network will not be the only one in the years to come.
update: "So in a hundred years the only social networking sites will be the Facebook, MySpace, Flickr, and Del.icio.us? Not likely." http://www.paulgraham.com/startuplessons.html
The internet population is already 1 billion. Thats plenty of people and opportunities.
Microsoft and Google with all that money should just buy all the startups they can and kill Facebook for good...
Or we should just expect the new "Norton" to invent the NEW anti-"socialnetwork"/virus
So basically we are all derivatives of that process. Everybody knows that.
The point is that philosophy is not about getting a claim and considering it substantial to eliminate other probabilities.
Metaphysics is not feasible they are part of a material world. they react with it of course but it exists whether you can accept it or not.
Everyone is trying to understand what happened to all that antimatter that was created during the bing bang. For every molecule there is another anti.
And what about time? who can explain that mystical concept? in the possibility that you can go beyond it, means it may not even be valid as a concept as we know it.
In all these strange ideas, it's impossible to be satisfied that everything is only molecules.
If everything is a chemical random chain reaction how can we all have similar ideas or visions of the future? and note that Greeks never considered chemistry as different from Physics. Only recently did Chemistry claim it's independence.
We are not cells and molecules. We are souls. Strange that an essay that talks about philosophy doesn't have even once the word soul.
Ancient Greek philosopher Aristotel seperates animals from humans as beings that have soul and the ability to think.
His work "Physics" tried to capture concepts people ignore even these days, and tried to examine in an amazing use of reason various metaphysical phenomena trying to find balance between whats real, fake and imaginary.
If you read the works of Aristotel and others, in original Greek you will be amazed by his astonishing ability to convey truth in a wonderful ingenious word of speech.

Plato talked about many not-connected subjects in a very indirect way to put the reader in becoming part of his works. Ingenius!
A very important concept of Socrates and Plato is the world of ideas. A seperate existance/entity/world that we all have access to. Modern science doesn't accept that, as there is not proof for that. But doesn't the fact that a lot of people share similar ideas at different place and time may be a small clue of exactly that?
Do you believe they would ignore a good startup and not invest in it even if they didn't win a prize?

there are enough and not enough startups already comprised of those beautiful creatures you call geeks!
laughing at the code of others is not the right start for learning programming!
having a non-technical co-founder is one thing, and having a person of a different field learn being technical a tottaly unnecessary thing and probably harder and needs totally different drive to pursue...technical persons tend to choose like minded ones. its easier for them to become business minded, at least one of them from the team...
good luck!
because 90% the time I read a comment during March it was like it was sent through s-mail and was stucked between a stamp and an envelope
In every YC funding cycle there will be those that will fail to get accepted. Of those, some will pursue their dream.
There is more risk in choosing potentially good founders, than a startup that you failed to recognize early that may had potential but now is in the process of proofing concept and on good track.
Thus, I am not talking about pre-launch startups.
