"thoughtful considerations about practical applications"

eurekin··on Pyinfra: Automate Infrastructure Using Python
Can concur, used puppet a bit at the dayjob and agent issues were common at some point.

Also, for bigger inventories on a single vm runtimes shot up quickly in the hour realm

Just did a quick chat about docker services, backing up volume mounts and hosting a git with CI. It held up really well. GPT-4 level well in this simple task
eurekin··on Visualizing Attention, a Transformer's Heart [video]
> TBF there is no good explanation why it works

I thought the general consesus was: "transformers allow neural networks to have adaptive weights".

As opposed to the previous architectures, were every edge connecting two neurons always has the same weight.

EDIT: a good video, where it's actually explained better: https://youtu.be/OFS90-FX6pg?t=750&si=A_HrX1P3TEfFvLay

eurekin··on Re-creating Disney's sodium vapor process [video]
So, a second beamsplitter with low-pass filter wouldn't cut it?
eurekin··on Re-creating Disney's sodium vapor process [video]
Maybe... it would get too hot?

EDIT: actually, since it's outside of the visible spectrum, typical lens design correcting longitudinal chromatic aberration and doing the spherical to rectlinear projection simply might be off, resulting in soft edged and general artifacts unwanted in a clean mask

Thanks for mentioning it - I wouldn't go and see that otherwise

It does look great!

eurekin··on JetMoE: Reaching LLaMA2 performance with 0.1M dollars

Just had a quick chat about kubernetes, very simple discussion. It held well

eurekin··on Mutt on Windows Without WSL
I'm using wsl2 and noticed general responsiveness drops way down during finetuning (comparing to any other heavy cpu+gpu usage natively) . How's that working in your setup?
eurekin··on PFAS in blood are ubiquitous and associated with risk of cardiovascular diseases
Can you expand a bit? Seems very interesting...

How do you manage to keep 100g of protein daily?

What is fixing macros?

How do you know you were in catabolic state, were you constantly loosing weight?

eurekin··on Show HN: Let's Build AI

eurekin··on How we engineer feedback at Figma with eng crits
I'd love to see that link!

The only page I found through kagi is:

    http://www.blablameter.com/index.php
but seems broken, because returns:

Your text: 14741 characters, 2454 words
    BS Index :0.27
Your text shows some indications of 'BS'-English, but is still within an acceptable range.
eurekin··on Fine tune a 70B language model at home
This might be the most interesting constructive approach in "Open Source" LLMs I've seen. Grounded, reasonable and inviting to replicate! I wish academia took that as a standard.

Great job!

eurekin··on "AI, no ads please": 4 words to wipe out $1T
I once had a pleasure of delving into the automotive mechanical engineering. Of course, most, if not all, materials ingested by OpenAI were obvious marketing straight from the brands website.

I started out the conversation multiple times anew, with explicit rules forbidding certain phrases. I couldn't make it stop throwing stuff like "best in class", "advanced", "sophisticated" no matter, what I did.

There will be demand for gpt's trained on an actual engineering material and it could actually be a huge gamechanger for that market.

eurekin··on Pg_vectorize: Vector search and RAG on Postgres
Is phi actually able to follow those instructions? How do you handle errors?

Another fellow Bezier enthusiast here!

I fell down deep into the rabbit hole of Beziers in the Rhinoceros modelling app. There is something special about clean higher order curvature continuity across shapes. It's simply beautiful.

That said, I have big issues with learning any other tool. So much of the app interface learning was required to be able to freely draw... I really do see, why the bitmap simplicity wins over in "I just need to have it done; needs to be published by x" cases

eurekin··on Meta outage
There was for a brief moment. I got that once
eurekin··on Generative AI and the widening software developer knowledge gap
And it's not even online machine learning, depending how does one see the very limited in context learning.

The offline learning is also a multi million dollar endeavor atm for most capable models. That does not take into account the cost of acquiring gpus.

Somehow all of this is missing from most articles.

I'm very happy people start pointing that out

What I'm more surprised of is that it's so defended, as if "I'm using it wrong"

Of course I do, I have a 16 and 32 pros as well.

That solves the browser.

What about colima vm for docker? Intellij, gradle daemon, android studio, xcode, electron apps, android virtual device, slack, spring boot apps, iMovie, Davinci Resolve, python notebooks?

eurekin··on Effect of gut microbiome modulation on muscle function and cognition
That's mind boggling. Is this published anywhere?
eurekin··on New 13- and 15‑inch MacBook Air with M3 chip
That's so extremely backwards in relation to everything else it's mind boggling. 16 gb being considered and priced at premium, where I had a single chrome tab eating 3gb easily few time's recently.

eurekin··on Keycloak: Modern Authentication and Access Management
I only briefly used Keycloak at my "home lab" (a SBC with traefik and few services) and felt nice: it had that feature of syncing with ldap, which I believe makes it special in that space
