eumoria··on The CPSC is on a mission that has nothing to do with safety
It's an interesting phenomenon; at its core is the "correct" idea that gas stoves aren't the most efficient and lead to indoor pollution but it is such a negligible problem that the effort put into legislation against it seems like a giant waste of time an resources.

I feel like most people are in the camp of, "Who cares? Is this really something we're worried about?" At least I am in that camp but there's also likely a term for ignoring the small problems because of the big problems.

Yea this is a GitHub repository that is an advertisement to purchase a book.
eumoria··on The McNamara fallacy: Measurement is not understanding
McNamara basically admits this himself in the documentary The Fog of War:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fog_of_War

It's worth a watch but it's very soft on him and his role. Still a very good documentary.

eumoria··on Giant Pyrosome

I'm not going in there. That's scary.

eumoria··on Windows 11’s first update makes AMD CPU performance even worse
I've had 0 problems *but I am working on very new hardware that the manufacturer already claims support for Win11.

I dislike the interface changes but I haven't liked changes since Windows 7 so I'm just in grumpy old man territory it seems.

What is the hardware configuration you're experiencing these problems on?

eumoria··on TikTok Remix Culture
Absolutely, sorry about that.
eumoria··on TikTok Remix Culture
Thank you new account praising TikTok and saying HN is a waste of time and proving my point.

I didn't ask "what's there to hate" but rather almost NO posts on HN get critical praise for an invasive social media app.

Wow.

eumoria··on TikTok Remix Culture
The endless praise for TikTok here is very confusing. I don't think it's in bad faith the account age of the commenters all seem normal and the like.

I don't have any strong hatred of TikTok myself but usually HN are a privacy concerned skeptical bunch and this is very weird.

eumoria··on M1 Macs have another hidden boot mode
I'm sure this is already known but no one else has mentioned it, you don't boot into recovery mode anymore with Command+R.

New M1 mini you just hold down the power button.

I know that's not people's issue here but just thought it should be said for anyone new to the new mini.

The Lenovo P52 models I ordered for my company have a physical slider that covers the camera. This is the 100% sure way nothing can see out of it. Too bad the microphone doesn't have the same level of assuredness. But it's also Lenovo who's already been caught doing hardware spying so...
eumoria··on How to Reverse-Engineer a Satellite TV Smart Card (2008)
The 'CableCard' system where I lived was pretty big during the TiVO era before cable companies started providing their own DVR systems.

You had to get 2 cards one for each tuner card in the TiVO and they would constantly fail and had endless issues. I was a Cablevision (a New York cable company) technician at the time.

eumoria··on Samsung: Anyone's thumbprint can unlock Galaxy S10 phone
Yubikeys can do FIDO along with storing a static complex password. I know android phones can lock with a password so it seems possible but it would be extremely clunky to have to plug in your key every time you unlock your phone.

Little outside of the topic but:

Haha, really? No one would expect a intemperate response out of this cool and collected admin.

That's super interesting was it mostly from cash crops? What benefits were paid to the north exclusively from that?

eumoria··on Using Countdown Clock Data to Understand the New York City Subway
Yea I figured this may be mentioned, it's the same in the UK they were running very old train stock of the same vintage until (I think) this year? I know it's also not the only problem but both the Japanese and UK cartridges aren't complete shit and falling apart.

Three times in the past 2 years (since I moved to the G line) the train had to be evacuated because the brakes locked on a car and someone smelled the awful burning it thinking it was an actual fire in the car. THREE TIMES.

If you maintain the cartridges there's no problem at all but there are so many problems it's way beyond that.

I'm a little of a train nerd (if not obvious) so I went to the train stock as an example but other underground systems prove that proper, well funded and well managed maintenance will make this a non-issue.

"Proper. Well Funded. Well Managed." - Not the MTA Subway System

eumoria··on Using Countdown Clock Data to Understand the New York City Subway
I don't mind paying a man to sit at the head of the train even if they're autonomous. I also don't believe making all the lines CBTC are going to solve the core issues of breakdowns outside of an ancient signaling system.

Some of the lines in NYC are still using R32 cars[1]. They were built in 1965 that is ludicrous. Granted, they were refurbished in the late 80s but that's still 30 years ago.

That said most of the lines are running "newer" stock (either from the late 80s[2] or mid-2000s[3]) but the focus on signaling, while at the core of many delays, is a band-aid on a system that is fundamentally broken by way of funding EVERYTHING appropriately. While I do appreciate the wifi in stations I completely don't care about it if the train doesn't arrive. While I do appreciate the "wait time" clocks they're meaningless when they say "5 minutes" for 15 minutes then switch to DELAY. You might as well not have a sign at all.

There are fundamental bureaucratic issues going on causing many of these problems and technology is not a root solution. It's a patch. You won't be able to argue with me that one of the busiest transport system in one of the richest cities on the planet cannot manage to fund serious upgrades.

Also wary of politicians blaming the unions like they're the cause of everything. This is an ongoing tactic that makes sure that nothing continues to happen. They aren't the problem directly even if there's a lot of dead weight. They're, again, a symptom of higher level management problems.

eumoria··on Samsung's 970 EVO SSDs Reviewed – 500GB and 1TB
As another user stated Startech makes one and I use it as a technician. It's not fast at all... it's mainly for recovery when you don't have a motherboard with an available M.2 slot you can still pull the data off it.

For that purpose it does the trick. The drive is capable of speeds 100x above USB 3.0 so there really isn't good to use that bus for anything other than emergency.

- Here is an image of the circuit it uses (ASM1163E Controller) https://i.imgur.com/ZmwppR4.jpg

- I can't find that IC anywhere but here's the closest thing: http://images.100y.com.tw/pdf_file/35-Asmedia-ASM1042A.pdf

PCI-E to USB 3.0 host bridge. Hopefully that helps.

eumoria··on Reddit's redesign could kill discussion subreddits
Because it isn't possible for them to make sure all jurisdictional compliance is there. Do they have an FFL? Does the person they're selling to across state lines also allowed to accept?

They're just covering their asses; it's not possible for them to watch every exchange so they have to ban all of it unfortunately.
