eulerphi··on Competing with a Mac
Re-defining what is a well-defined english word using hipster-startup-hack-bias is contrived and self-fulfilling. The phone caused disruption in the world, done, done, and done. Now quit trying to fit the word disrupt into every conversation. Products create a rift, or they don't. Products are worth their value, or they're not. There's no magical "disrupt" criteria to satisfy the startup hivemind rubric.
eulerphi··on JavaScript Allongé is free
A rant about Mozilla, a non-profit FSF company and then corporate sycophantism for GitHub?
eulerphi··on Show HN: UI improvements for Jenkins
Having used CircleCI for a trial period, I can say Jenkins is definitely the way to go. CI on a PaaS is a bit of a black box, and when things go wrong you will suffer. The only real thing CircleCI does is put some pretty CSS around what Jenkins already does. Nice try though...

Good job on having the typical non-biased flak-attack and also spamming your startup.
eulerphi··on Ask HN: Did your side project become your main source of income in 2013?
I can't mention the specific degree because it would probably let the firm know who I am but I did not major in math, most of my knowledge of statistics, calculus, number theory, was self-learned out of curiosity.
eulerphi··on Ask HN: Did your side project become your main source of income in 2013?
This is going to be a long one.

I started working on Wall Street shortly after the housing bubble in late 2007 for a very well-known firm. After two years of building various computational models based on esoteric distributions purposed for HFT, I realized that I could do it myself on albeit a smaller scale. I decided to target bitcoin because it is highly volatile and makes for a good asset to hedge against. I'm now making about 20,000 a week just on bitcoin trading with about 100k liquid (80k earned from trading itself, 20k from savings originally.)

I look at jobs as a good way to learn what is profitable, and self-projects to make the real cash. Salaried jobs are never going to give a person the freedom they need. And no programmers are "rockstars", musicians are..

eulerphi··on Surface Blades – true innovation from Microsoft
Hm right, bidirectional input/output for lightshows and whatnot. We have to be careful not to tread into full peripheral territory - because the whole point of these things is to be covers as well? I guess we'll just have to see what M$ offers and hope it's innovative. Because I have no reason to buy yet another tablet unless there truly is something that makes me excited.
eulerphi··on Surface Blades – true innovation from Microsoft
You might be looking at it the wrong way. From what I can gander, these blades are going to be for application-specific use. I can see a double-folding math-character keyboard for Mathematica or design-tool for Photoshop being quite useful. Yes, this whole thing is novel, but as we've seen with the iPhone-era, novel gidgets and quirkets make people go bananas. Nothing new, yes, but still a cool thing if executed right. The big difference that people aren't getting here, is that touchscreen UIs take away screen real estate and are limited in size, these covers can be double or triple-folding and can have all kinds of LED-driven knobs, sliders, and whatnot.
eulerphi··on FlameStower - USB charger powered by fire
People in Africa aren't going to be using a USB generator. They will generate to a battery and then use that battery later. This device will _waste_ the output of the fire for the most part, it's open..not closed like a calorimeter. It's a joke of a device.
eulerphi··on Disrupting “Disruption” Rhetoric
It is juvenile. And it is inherently carnal. A business shouldn't need to screw with other businesses to be successful. It's much better to have a business that stands on its own merit rather than one that parasitically targets other businesses. Disruption is a natural process, not a goal. Making it a goal just causes impurity in the realm of what the company actually is vying to do.
eulerphi··on Transfer a secret audio message by poking someone with your finger
Care to explain your pedantry? Especially is connoting a favored preference, whereas even is denoting an absolute preference.
eulerphi··on FreeBSD 10.0 Alpha 1 now available
I had FreeBSD running on my old Dell Studio 1737. It took some effort but most of the linux drivers will work with BSD if you edit the source and recompile.
eulerphi··on Airless energy return wheel
The "less energy" is only true for an uneven surface. A normal tire would have to fight against the up/down movement. The sprung tire would act somewhat like a cam and transfer the up/down movement into forward movement.
eulerphi··on How Vacations Affect Your Happiness
It's less the vacation itself and moreover the absence of work and refractory recovery of creative and physical energies

eulerphi··on Is Anything Better Than Rice to Fix a Wet iPhone?
No need to waste money on a "beasty bag."

Desiccants are the generic name for water-removing substances: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desiccant

Amazon has silica gel (the most common desiccant) at $13 per 25-pack of 3"x1" 10 gram bags. That's a crap ton of desiccant. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B003DKQB02/B004D9R9OM...

eulerphi··on Guy who hacked Zuckerberg gets a well-deserved career change
Well-deserved is a bit of an overstatement. All we know is that he was able to do an HTTP parameter switcheroo. Does that mean he can build things? No, it just means he as the ability to tinker. A start, yes, but well-deserved does not belong in the title.
