Wouldn't an increase in co2 in the atmosphere spur a massive plant growth, both on land and in the oceans? I have no qualifications nor merit in this field as well, so anyone please feel free to correct me if I am wrong.
ethor··on The U.S. birth rate has fallen by 20% since 2007
These statistics [1] would suggest that sociological factors are in play, especially if you look at the graphs for young people. The number of young men not having sex is at record numbers.

ethor··on Ask HN: Why is news about fusion ignition not a bigger deal in popular media?
It has been extensively covered here in Sweden.
ethor··on Ask HN: Best way to stop bot traffic?
They do cater to a need and their solution is effective.
ethor··on Ask HN: Best way to stop bot traffic?
Most of the bots concerns the frontpage.
ethor··on Ask HN: Best way to stop bot traffic?
How do you differ from Cloudflare?
ethor··on Ask HN: Best way to stop bot traffic?
I am concerned about false positives - but I will weigh cons and pros. Thank you for your suggestion.
ethor··on Ask HN: Best way to stop bot traffic?
1. Bots are more than half of my traffic right now and they don't provide any benefits except using my bandwidth and distort my statistics. 2. Strange behavior + technology 2a-c. Could be a part of a solution. 3. Good idea

The purpose of this thread is to gather ideas and experiences. A silver bullet would be great, but since it's not realistic, all ideas are more than welcome.

ethor··on Ask HN: Best way to stop bot traffic?
Blocking real users is not an option - but I can see that this would be a good setup if blocking bots were of the absolute highest priority.
ethor··on Ask HN: Best way to stop bot traffic?
In my case I am concerned about false positives since visitor experience is a higher priority than blocking all bots. Cloudflare, in my experience, do generate too many false positives when it's too aggressive. A very nice idea though in other cases.
ethor··on Ask HN: Best way to stop bot traffic?
Good suggestions. A priority is to not in any way diminish the visitor experience, I am therefore very wary of false positives.
ethor··on Ask HN: Best way to stop bot traffic?
Excellent idea!

Well done!

I love generating generic cartoons from input. Very useful when creating icons / avatars!

ethor··on Which housing markets are most exposed to the coming interest-rate storm?
Very interesting, thank you for sharing. Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Iceland have seemingly all chosen the same path, will Finland has remained conservative. The future will tell what was the best policy.
ethor··on Which housing markets are most exposed to the coming interest-rate storm?
An increase in supply of housing would also dampen the demand for renting, thus decreasing the willingness of speculators to buy new rental units.
ethor··on Which housing markets are most exposed to the coming interest-rate storm?
Most of your suggestions would cause other problems. The root of the current situation is seemingly a lack of supply which in turn is mostly due to government regulations.

For instance, here in Sweden, it's very bizarre since we very much don't lack land suitable for new homes. Nimby regulations together with construction laws have however created a situation where prices for new homes have skyrocketed. Demand is overshooting supply by a lot (for the last decades), when there is nothing but government regulations keeping the market from beeing able to supply this demand.

ethor··on Canada to ban foreigners from buying homes
It would have been true if the supply side of the market was working. Low interest rates have increased demand but the market has not been apply to increase the number of available homes to meet the demand, hence existing properties have increased in price.

ethor··on Ask HN: Best open source icon SVG pack?
Fixed, and updated the title.
ethor··on Ask HN: Can web scraping be the basis of a viable business model?
In my opinion you should start with defining your value proposition and target market, i.e. how do I create value for customers, and who are my customers?

ethor··on The origin of Covid: Did people or nature open Pandora’s box?
I think you should be wary of your semantics, there is seemingly a consensus that the virus is not man-made - the question is if the virus "escaped" from a laboratory in Wuhan (originating from nature, however studied in a controlled environment).

The link you provided does discuss the probability of the virus accidentally leaking from a laboratory, however the reasons provided does not really provide much facts, seemingly more speculation (except for facts regarding who we think is patient zero):

"The WIV, and Dr. Zhengli-Li Shi’s lab group, are extremely well-respected in the virology community. As well respected as many US scientists.

● All the WIV’s sampling of bats and the genomes that they find in bats are publicly available information. Why isn’t SARS-CoV-2 on any of those lists? We would know.

● This doesn’t look anything like any laboratory accident that we’ve seen before.

● The evidence we have points to Patient Zero being nowhere near the City of Wuhan." (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1kAHSEx9-eIyVIahczH8itHaUm9j...)

ethor··on Cloudflare’s privacy-first Web Analytics is now available for everyone
I don’t know if it’s already known, but I guess this will provide useful data against webcrawlers and scrapers.
ethor··on Newest version of Google Chrome blocks me from downloading Eclipse installer
Thank you for providing that link. That would explain the error. I don't have any extensions changing the url, I am however in Europe (Sweden) which probably allocates me towards different mirrors.

I will make sure that the mirror url provided by eclipse is not affected by anything on my setup, and if that's the case report it to the Eclipse foundation.

ethor··on Newest version of Google Chrome blocks me from downloading Eclipse installer
Strange, I am using Windows 10 with Chrome version 86.0.4240.75 (Official build) (64-bit)

ethor··on Newest version of Google Chrome blocks me from downloading Eclipse installer
Using Google Chrome (version 86) trying to download the eclipse installer gives me the error message that the installer can't be downloaded securely.

Google chrome having a market share of 66 % blocking a secure website (seemingly arbitrarily) is at least problematic.

ethor··on The Vikings Were More Complicated Than You Might Think
From what I’ve read the word viking derivates from the word vik which basically means ’bay’ - viking is hence one that travels by the bay.
