ethelward··on Raku vs. Perl
Then use a clear, simple, precise language; I think Java for instance, with the improvements in the last versions, could fit the bill.

Personally, I'm happy that we live in a time where we have many different languages featuring meny different paradigms; I find it refreshing and stimulating.

ethelward··on Emacs: The most successful malleable system
> Saving the file does take about a minute or two, though.

Last time I strace-ed vim, it did a ftruncate to 0 on the original file before writing the whole content back; so no suprise it's rather slow if it dumps 10GB on disk :)

> What do you miss in multicursor that macros give you?

Not OP, but to take a recent example (although it was in Emacs, I'm pretty sure it would work in any advanced editor), I had a macro select the second half of the open file and pipe it through sort and uniq to replace it with each unique line and their number of occurences. That's not doable with multi-cursors; their use cases intersect but don't overlap with macros ones.

And Python. And Ruby. And C++. And Kotlin. And Swift.

ethelward··on How often does Rust change?
You have examples for that?
ethelward··on FreeBSD has removed GCC from its base system
IIRC, yes; it was the last version under GPLv2.

> Any plans on giving the annexed territories back?

Sure, if the Germans give it back to [the original Prussians](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Prussians), it would only be fair.

ethelward··on Jetstar pilots forgot to lower the landing gear
The fact that they performed the first powered flight is disputed (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ader_Éole).

However, it is certain that they carried out the first non-negligible, directed, flight.

ethelward··on How to rewrite it in Rust
Ruby and Node are, for the most part, not playing in the same field than Rust. I have absolutely no problem seeing them living along each others for decades.

ethelward··on Historians Find Another Spy in the U.S. Atomic Bomb Project
The US want ‶free″ markets, but with bonus if they are using dollars, have no problem taking bribes from US firms, respect US sanctions and give a few oh-so-subtle advantages to US firms there and there.

Note that I don't blame them, any world power would do the same.

ethelward··on Epstein's injuries look more like murder than suicide, noted pathologist says
Let's take it the other way around and assume it was a murder.

> would he not arrange so it would be sent out in case of his death?

Not being able to do that while in high-security confinment.

> And what stops the victims of naming names now?

Not wanting to die.

> what would have stopped Epstein of just not talking and just denying?

The only way to be sure he would not talk is to definitely prevent him from talking.

Now I'm not saying the murder hypothesis is the correct one, but it still holds water IMHO.

As a matter of fact, in its originally intended domain (i.e. scientific computing), it actually never stopped being a major player.

ethelward··on FreeDOS's Linux Roots
You can do more or less the same with e.g. objdump, but the root difference is that DOS COM binaries are very simple: basically a tiny header then the whole program in a big chunk.

More modern formats (be it PE, ELF, Mach-o, ...) are far more complex, with many different segments, running in a more complex CPU mode, generally dynamically linked, and all the other bell and whistles. So even if you had an identical debug.exe for Linux, it would still be much harder to make sense of.

No, in absolute numbers.
ethelward··on Buying into the Emacs Platform (2018)
That's more of an architecture problem rather than an intrinsic characteristic of Java though. I'm not a fan of the language, but I think the latest versions added some nifty features that make working with the language not as bad as it used to be.

> I didn’t know that the package managers require you to use Linux’s LLVM. That’s a shame.

They don't require you to use “Linux's LLVM” (which would not make any sense given that Linux and LLVM are two independent projects), they make you use the version of LLVM they are currently packaging.

> Do all the major package managers do this or is it just apt?

All the package managers will conceptually do that; however, how old is the considered LLVM will vary strongly depending on the packaging policy of your distribution.

Performances issues will be hard to estimate, as you can not compare safari to the others on the same phone, which means that you will not be able to correct for hardware and software stacks influences.
ethelward··on BioRender – Professional Science Figures
That's not specialized software for medicine, it's a clipart library (like we had on additional CDs for Paint Artist and the others) slapped on top of a basic vector editor.

It does not take anything from the quality of this product, but you can not really compare it to programs that have dozens of norms and verification processes to go through.

ethelward··on Germans Who Refused to Execute Civilians During World War II (1988) [pdf]
The Soviets did not honor the Geneva convention, as they had not even signed it at the time.

The Germans explicitely suspended its use in their armed forces for the Eastern Front – which is why millions of Soviet PoWs were left to die of starvation in what was basically large cattle pens while Jews or card-carrying Communists were to be shot on the spot after capture.
