ethanhawksley··on I don't like passkeys
heya! sorry about that, I don't usually have an iPhone on me to test updates to my site so I must've broken something in its reader mode. I'll be borrowing one tomorrow and try figure out what's causing this :)

ethanhawksley··on .name Termination
I think it's pretty reasonable. The percentage of email accounts Google & Microsoft terminate seems far far lower than the chance I misconfigure my email or lose my domain
ethanhawksley··on How to get a free .arpa domain
whoops good catch, I had thought it was a synonym for the record ttl's expiring

I'll go fix it now

ethanhawksley··on How to get a free .arpa domain
That would be my assumption, although I wouldn't bet on it being as stable as a traditional domain registration
ethanhawksley··on Show HN: I'm a 15 Year Old Wannabe Engineer, This Is a Cycloidal Gearbox I Built
You can just join their Slack workspace (it's a bit like Discord) on their website: https://slack.hackclub.com/ Then in the #announcements channel you'll see all the different projects they're running, just pick and choose the ones that interest you. I went to one of their meetups "Horizons Europa" last week and had a great time!
ethanhawksley··on Half a Second – a book about the XZ backdoor
for future reference, I've since renamed the book to "The Second Maintainer"
ethanhawksley··on Half a Second – a book about the XZ backdoor
I might even need to change the name of the book
ethanhawksley··on Half a Second – a book about the XZ backdoor
I've also been working on a free book about the XZ backdoor called 500 milliseconds. However, unlike this author it is entirely human written. A first draft is ready and I'm aiming to publish in a couple weeks
ethanhawksley··on Orion Browser by Kagi
They can give me as good a guarantee as any search engine can that they pinkie promise they aren't selling your data. What keeps me with kagi is the quality. It is night and day using it and using other search engines. Even if they sold my searches, I'd still use them in a heartbeat.

ethanhawksley··on Choosing a Public DNS Resolver
I believe cloudflare only blocked archive.is on their "Families" filtered dns. I've been using their normal 1.1.1.1 and haven't encountered any blocks.
ethanhawksley··on Google Has Added Agentic Browsing to PageSpeed Insights
Just benchmarking my site and saw it as a new category.
ethanhawksley··on Statement on US government directive to suspend access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5
As far as I can tell, this seems like it's impacting all of their Glasswing partners too, so no mythos for them either
ethanhawksley··on Claude Opus 4.8
> Agentic financial analysis Finance Agent v2 > Opus 4.8 53.9%

> Gemini 3.5 Flash scores 57.9% on Finance Agent v2, a significant improvement over Gemini 3.1 Pro.

Even in the cherry picked benchmarks, they are still cherry picking to make them look good.

ethanhawksley··on Google changes its search box
I can't say enough good things about kagi, genuinely the best search engine I've tried
ethanhawksley··on Gaining control of every projector and camera on campus
very nice article!

The current archive link is outdated, https://web.archive.org/web/20260515155930/https://ascii.tex... is more up to date with the May 10 post
ethanhawksley··on We need Post-Quantum Cryptography more than ever
good shout, I went back over and broke down the HNDL attack into more detail and now properly explain the types of data at risk from Q-day. let me know if it reads clearer now!
