esyir··on Ask HN: Have you experienced “hiring fraud?”
A-grade melodrama here. It's a flight once a year that requires you to pack your bag and get on a plane. Not some gargantuan event that "upends your life"
esyir··on Once again so many people are led to think Wikipedia is broke and must be saved
For a charitable/non-profit organization, providing them with funding way above their needs is counterproductive. As seen with Wikipedia, in the presence of excess money, costs proceed to grow uncoupled to the progression of their core mission.

As charity funding is effectively a closed system, excessive contribution to Wikipedia is to the detriment of other charities, with minimal net benefit.

esyir··on Observations from our Joe Rogan Experience experience
The fact that he turned out an extremely solid wartime politician came as a massive surprise to me. At the very least, whoever is in charge of his image is doing a phenomenal job.
esyir··on The AI Art Apocalypse
I'll add in that sculpture too might see challenge, thought it's materials might see resistance for some time. 3d Printing is already at a state where the output is of extremely high detail, and still on it's ascent (resin printing specifically). While not a like-for-like comparison, it's seen heavy use in favor of traditional sculpting in multiple industries, such as miniature production, where it completely replaces or heavily reduces the use of the traditional skillset.
esyir··on Meta is raising the price of the Quest 2 to 400 USD
I'm interested to see what the lens advancements are going to look like. A good chunk of the weight/bulk comes from the current lens setup, so if the new ones reduce bulk and weight, that would make life a lot better.
esyir··on Meta is raising the price of the Quest 2 to 400 USD
I'd say claiming that the concept of working in VR is discriminatory is at at the very least extreme hyperbole.
esyir··on Meta is raising the price of the Quest 2 to 400 USD
There's a few tricks that VR games can do to handle motion sickness with free movement. Some have already mentioned the edge of screen effects, but another would be tying movement to the "running" arm movements. That, for some odd reason, significantly reduces motion sickness.
esyir··on Negative incentives in academic research
From what I remember, it's not uncommon for proposals and actual work to be disjoint. Back when I was in academia, you'd hear of PIs writing a proposal, getting a grant and then deploying that on a completely different project.
esyir··on The GPU shortage is over
Not sure about the root cause, but there have been numerous reports of mining gpus ram issues, particularly on the radeon VII line. There, after mining, they're often unable to hold even stock memory clocks.
esyir··on Anti-Abortion Centers Find Pregnant Teens Online, Then Save Their Data
The trimesters have absolutely 0 actual meaning here, as this is fundamentally putting an arbitrary line on a continuous process. Yet this is probably the only way you're getting anything, as they're at least a useful Schelling point that can get some compromise.

I said analogous, not identical. Clearly they see it as bad, but not nearly as bad as murder. If it was literally mass murder to them, I'd expect more bombs and riots, and less "campaign against it for 50 years to repeal it".
esyir··on Anti-Abortion Centers Find Pregnant Teens Online, Then Save Their Data
Essentially, the pro-choice group scored a tactical victory, that turned out to be a strategically vulnerable position. And in turn, the can got kicked down to our era.

Except that (virtually) nobody on the right truly believes that it's full fledged baby murder. They believe it's bad, but clearly, from their response, it's not anywhere near as bad as that.

If your government/heathcare/someOtherOrg was grinding up babies post birth at scale, or any equivalent, I'd expect the response to be more riots and bombs, and less "Let's campaign for fifty odd years to get the capability to ban it in a number of states".

Edit: Response to "of course they do": I strongly disbelieve that, simply because of their response

There were ~600k abortions in 2021. If the right truly believed in their hearts that an abortion is directly equal to a murder, they'd basically be giving a pathetic response to what would be an absolutely "Final Solution" level crime. Estimates of the Jewish death toll were ~6 million and was responded to by full fledged, hot war. If their response to a holocaust every 10 years was "we'll slowly eke forward over 50Y, and manage to get bans in just half the country", that's a hell of a pathetic response.

From their perspective, it's more analogous to murder. Not exactly something you just live and let be.
esyir··on Schools Are Spending Billions on High-Tech Defense for Mass Shootings
We do that for the military. Society definitely has the magic OK to say that people can trade money for risk, even to life and limb. I'm also relatively certain that a very good chunk of the US military is A: Willing to risk their lives in such a situation, and B: Not going to make the absolutely batshit insane choice of stopping others who were trying to resolve said situation.

In more general terms, there's a whole bunch of jobs out there where the pay is higher because of risk to life and limb too.

esyir··on America Is Growing Apart
You mean like the current, openly promoted attempts to perform a similar "coup" on judicial decisions? There are very few cases where protest is illegal, and at a judge's residence to influence their decisions is definitely one of them.

esyir··on Supreme Court Overturns Roe vs. Wade
And people wonder why decisions can be made and polarization continues to increase.

"Who cares what they think indeed"

esyir··on Supreme Court Overturns Roe vs. Wade
For the record, Ginsburg thought that Roe vs Wade was a mistake, for this exact reason. Momentum was lost to get actually good legislation in, and the vulnerable Roe vs Wade was put in instead.
esyir··on Supreme Court Overturns Roe vs. Wade
So why do I not have the right to X, where X is some random thing I want that doesn't violate the other rights?

Simply going "Oh, there are more rights" isn't a good answer. I'm pro-choice myself, but Roe vs Wade was terrible legislation, and is a fantastic example of tactical victory, strategic defeat.

esyir··on Meta VR prototypes aim to make VR 'indistinguishable from reality'
I'd like to see these, because when I went looking, they were a hell lot more expensive than that.

DDR is in this awkward space where it's either cheap and garbage, or expensive as all hell. The DDRGAME stuff, from what I've heard is somewhat pricy AND garbage.

esyir··on We Don't Have Enough Free Speech on the Internet
In practice, the only people I've seen deploy this quote are not using it against the censorious and murderous, but against those they simply disagree with.
esyir··on Chesa Boudin Recalled by San Francisco Voters
Ah, I see. No true leftist.
esyir··on Intel's New Chimera: Alder Lake
Nobody said you needed an enterprise grade server. A simple desktop with proxmox or something installed would work just fine.
esyir··on Knitters got knotted in a purity spiral (2020)
Alternate hypothesis. Why do they need to campaign like that, they control the presidency.
esyir··on Twitter set to accept Musk's $43B offer – sources
Would said community be something akin to a rhetorical castle feature, perchance?
esyir··on Twitter set to accept Musk's $43B offer – sources
Tone policing good. I unironically believe this, especially if tone policing allows actual discussion, rather than shouting matches.
esyir··on Twitter set to accept Musk's $43B offer – sources
As far as I can tell, those didn't look like the USA applying martial law to large swathes of its populace.
esyir··on The bottom is dropping out of Netflix
Same mangaka.
esyir··on US sentences crypto expert to 5 years after North Korea blockchain presentation
Yes, but when people say war in isolation, the vast majority of the population take that that, rightfully so, to refer to the conventional bullets flying tanks rolling, literally death dealing war.

Axlees post above reads in amazingly bad faith. It's just a "oh, you're not using this nonstandard definition you fool" type sarcastic response to dismiss the point, contributing nothing in itself.
