esutton··on Sparrow acquired by Google
What makes this worse is they've been offering a discounted price this past week for their apps. Seems wrong to take money from new users days before your about to stop development.
esutton··on Google hopes to escape Galaxy Nexus sales ban with software patch | The Verge
pushing out a (possibly) non optional update that dumbs down a phone that a user owns. there's something wrong with that.
esutton··on Nexus 7, Made for Google Play
Galaxy Nexus HSPA+ unlocked is now 350 through the play store
esutton··on ‘Tis the season for Chromebooks
the drop was from 350 to 300.
esutton··on Google Just Snuck Most of Chrome OS Onto the iPad
Wow the video really portrays chrome os 2.0
esutton··on ‘Tis the season for Chromebooks
Just want to throw it out there I'be been using a chromebook for the past three months and love it.
esutton··on Amazon Kindle Fire review
just throwing this out there, the silk browser takes advantage of caching content. when you have only a dozen reviewers using it is not really indicative of how it will preform with a million users using it
esutton··on Dropbox for Teams
there should be a variable option where you can trade users for storage. i.e. i want 10 users sharing 500gb, or 20 users sharing 250 gb. Dropbox for teams never attracted me not because of the storage size, rather it was the high price to add users.
esutton··on Google offers better Chromebook pricing to lure businesses and schools
all i have to say is I love my chromebook and the majority of people that diss it haven't used one for more than a few days.
esutton··on Why isn't all Internet traffic encrypted?
it is mentioned briefly on the page, but the major victim of encryption is caching. That is one of the main reasons encrypted traffic is slower.
esutton··on [dead]
someone should get a comment from AA HQ whether it is indeed corporate policy to block twitter during an emergency landing. Other possibilities may be that this is a GOGO policy, or there was just an issue connecting to twitter.
esutton··on Hulu Owners Cancel Plans to Sell Company
Hulu is a well designed and great product. That said, hulu's value is its content not its backend and community. The only reason to buy hulu would be if it came with streaming rights that were more valuable than the purchasing price.
esutton··on BUSTED: Groupon Caught Inflating Regular Prices To Make Deals Look Better
did whoever down voted me actually read the article?
esutton··on BUSTED: Groupon Caught Inflating Regular Prices To Make Deals Look Better
title is misleading, it doesn't say that GROUPON raised the price, it just said prices of offers on groupon occasionally did not reflect the cost quoted by the establishment. The fault most likely lies with the business owner.
esutton··on IOS 5's "Cleaning" Behavior
So really what would make everyone is a type of Selective_Sync, i.e. there are three file types. those that are ephemeral and can be deleted. those that are ephemeral but should only deleted if given permission And those that need to be backed up.
esutton··on Box.net giving away 50 gigs to iOS users
It looks like the blog is getting hammered right now. But 3 notes: 1)the limit of 100 mb per file is a weak way of limiting the promotion. 2)a lot of people are gonna be pissed of that you don't get it unless you install and create your account after midnight. 3)finally this is a shot across the bow of dropbox. 50gb for life for free is a big deal even with the file size crippling.
esutton··on Hacked - Magazine - The Atlantic
its an interesting article. Might be a little redundant for people that read hacker news. That said if it gets non techies to seriously consider password diversification and a backup strategy, kudos.
esutton··on Free Texting Apps Are Threat to Wireless Carriers
i disagree, free texting apps do not hurt carrier profits for 2 reasons. a) Users don't want another phone number, and even if they agreed, getting your friends to text you using that number instead of you carrier number is a large burden. b)texts are priced so that even if you are able to use apps to cut down your texting, you don't save any money. for example: a text costs 20 cents. verizon has a plan for 5 dollars a month for 250 texts. if after using apps you are able to get your incidental texts down to 25, you break even. Anymore and you loose money. ATT is worse by forcing you into unlimited plans. Which is why carriers are not afraid of iMessage. As long as users have a few incidental texts they'll still buy plans to prevent bill shock.

update:they mention point 2 at the end of the article but don't view it as damning as i do.

esutton··on I Think Your App Should Be Free
interesting read, though it wont change anyones mind on piracy one way or the other
esutton··on Giving up the Chromebook
as a chromebook user, i find this article disappointing. what it really summed up to was flash is not working well -> chrome os is doomed, instead of maybe chromebooks need a hardware boost. By that theory iphones/ipads are worse because flash doesn't work at all. I will also say that i have found flash to be working better on the device as the upgrades have progressed.

The biggest flaw with chrome os has been google not educating users on new features as they come out. for instance the average user has no idea that they can open apps in panels.

esutton··on Stripe: instant payment processing for developers
google checkout works in the uk
esutton··on Google Drive: Is the Dropbox Party Over?
to be fair the original pricing for app engine was for a google product that was in early beta. Google Docs has been out of beta for a long time, and their storage prices have decreased since they were first released. In addition they have removed file type limitations, and increased max file size to 10gb. It is be beyond unlikely that they would regress and increase prices.
esutton··on "How much does a website cost?" – a survey of web designers
i for one am tired of the hourly model. set a price whatever it may be. If you go low, you'll charge more the next time. if you go high, people will go to someone else.
esutton··on Advise Me HN: Parallel Computing n00b
dont forget parallel is much larger than cuda, gpu's just happen to be largely parallelizable chips. If your really basic, play around with java and get a feeling for threads and synchronous, maybe write a map/reduce program or 2 and run it on aws.
esutton··on Google Drive: Is the Dropbox Party Over?
you can use selective sync
esutton··on Google Drive: Is the Dropbox Party Over?
google docs already does this with cloud connect
esutton··on Google Drive: Is the Dropbox Party Over?
in addition as time progresses the cost of storage has gone down and can be expected to continue to do so.
esutton··on Tell HN: YCNYC Feedback
had a great time, only comment though is, while I figured it out, it might have made sense to tell people what the color codes on the name tags meant.
esutton··on Google Drive: Is the Dropbox Party Over?
you are right, my bad i missed that. Even so, my original comment is still relevant when you look at how google eventually realized their own product wouldn't catch up to a startup's, and bought them out.
esutton··on Google Drive: Is the Dropbox Party Over?
in the dropbox forums company representatives constantly comment that lower price plans are not feasible. That said, I've always been disappointed by companies that make you buy buckets of units (like postpaid cellphone plans) that they know you will never use rather than offering a per unit price. If the cost to provide 1gb of storage per month is higher than 10/50, than charge the higher price, don't hide it by shifting the cost of power users onto regular users.
