esskay··on Two-tier encryption in the UK
They dont really need to pull out, instead on every single piece of marketing material where they talk about anything remotely close to things affected by this they mention that unfortunately they cant give it to UK users due to the governments desire to erode privacy protection, and really hammer home how bad it is.
esskay··on SAML: A fractal of bad design
I hope its referred to as "this is the article idiots who know nothing about modern php reference in a futile attempt to make it appear they know what they are talking about" as every time someone mentions that article it seems to be when they want to show everyone how daft they are.
esskay··on Samsung is expected to more than double output of its HBM4 and HBM4E DRAM
so you fell for clickbait.

its ram for the types of systems ai needs in datacenters so...no?
esskay··on Neovim have a ~$800k Bitcoin donation sitting untouched since 2023
oh i dont think its 'dead' in the way people often describe. More...done. Like, the period of obscene growth is over and its now seemingly settled into a fairly dull investment with mediocre returns.
esskay··on Neovim have a ~$800k Bitcoin donation sitting untouched since 2023
I know you're joking but keeping bitcoin now really does feel like a poor investment given it's showing no signs of ever being revived.
esskay··on Show HN: I made a flight simulator, except you're just a passenger
*how much work Claude put in. The UI is a dead giveaway.
esskay··on Steam Frame starts at $1059
Valves own testing + reviewers. Nobody anywhere has got anything close to the speed you're suggesting.
esskay··on Steam Frame starts at $1059
Yeah the controller didnt have the lottery system, thats why they implemented it for the steam machine and frame having learnt their lesson.
esskay··on Steam Frame starts at $1059
I imagine thats why they've gone so far with the dual stream setup that can use the 6ghz dongle + your wifi for ultra low latency to a dedicated machine.
esskay··on Steam Frame starts at $1059
Thats a lot harder to do now they use a lottery system which if I'm not mistaken also takes account history into account along with physical address.

> hard sell against a new or used Q3

That depends. Having had a Quest 2 and dealt...nay, put up with with Meta and their god awful ecosystem you couldn't pay me to touch another one of their headsets. I'll take an open linux based one over a Q3 any day. That alone makes the price difference worth it to me. Throw in the foveated streaming and the vastly superior quality and latency of streaming and it makes for a fairly decent offering.

esskay··on Steam Frame starts at $1059
Valve thought of that. Its got a 1 hour battery life and you have to wait 3-5 hours for it to charge back up!
esskay··on Steam Frame starts at $1059
Also only possible if you've got a power outlet (Surprisingly even today many long haul flights do not) as its only got just over an hour of battery life.
esskay··on Anthropic boss Dario Amodei calls for AI development to slow down
arent all AI company CEO's?
esskay··on Aardman (Wallace and Gromit) Is Selling Its Original Movie Puppets
There has since been another company that has been able to produce the same clay so its now less of an issue.
esskay··on iPhone Duo
Gotta hold something back for next years magical update!
esskay··on Shopify acquires Tailwind
This was after they laid everyone off, so it was just Adam and Steve left. An they surpassed $2M a year in sponsorships a couple of months after that. They were not struggling for cash at all.
esskay··on Shopify acquires Tailwind
I'm not sure they'd even be classed as competitors to be honest. They floundered massively with the ui kit, most sections of it were very dated and untouched for several years whilst they piddled about with a failed new ui kit that never took off, for which they blamed ai.

The reality was that a big chunk of their initial audience came from Laravel, and as other players emerged and made what was Tailwind UI irrelevant it all seemed to compound into them panicking and making some rather silly business decisions. At one point they had a sizeable team and shipped nothing for a good 8 months, and when they did it was a couple of beautiful but completely impractical landing pages. They just didn't convert it to a sustainable business.

Oh and to add to it, they alienated their paying customers by dropping support for basic js based components in favour of making the entire ui library reliant on heavy js libraries, killing off any interest from most of the Laravel customers who'd been their initial target audience.

esskay··on Muse – Meta’s personal AI agent
I cant help feeling you'd have to be a special kind of stupid at this point to start feeding even more of your life into Meta. This is clearly aimed at the over 50's - their primary market on facebook.
esskay··on Tell HN: OpenAI brings back 5 hour limit for plus and business standard users
Sorry but this is a pretty delusional take. No, you cant run the same level or even close to that level of model on a mac, not even on a 512gb studio. You can run good models sure, but not models anywhere close to the capabilities of these ones yet, despite what idiots on Twitter keep spouting.
esskay··on Keep Our Servers Running
That would be pretty crappy of you given he was attacking an innocent 3rd party. Morals be damned i guess.
esskay··on Asahi Linux on M3
Of course they will. Why would you pay for icloud storage you cant use?
esskay··on Asahi Linux on M3
They also make an arm and a leg on services, which is why its not in their interest to make it so you cant use them.
esskay··on It's time for Mark Zuckerberg to resign from Meta
I always find it surprising when I hear of someone younger using facebook. I associate it with retired/elderly folks who love posting cryptic messages about their health or how their day has gone wanting attention.
esskay··on M-DISC – DVD/Blu-ray compatible discs that may last up to 1000 years
I can assure you it is readily available online and always will be. And now that we've had confirmation you basically own nothing then it'll be more prominent than ever.
esskay··on Keep Our Servers Running
I'm quite surprised they havent also adopted a high paying sponsorship model. If they had something and large hosting providers were pressured into sponsoring them by customers they'd have no funding issues.

Also why arent they on opencollective? Surely thats a no brainer!

esskay··on Keep Our Servers Running
It doesnt really deserve anything given they used the site to attack people. See the comment above yours.
esskay··on Nitter has more working instances than before the takedowns
A good example would be Supertram - the Sheffield tram service. It's only ever provided service disruption notices on twitter. The stations have digital signs which they installed years ago and have always been completely flawed in that they cant actually update them remotely, nor can they say if a tram is running late. They just play a fixed playlist on a loop.
esskay··on M-DISC – DVD/Blu-ray compatible discs that may last up to 1000 years
I cant imagine many people are backing up movies/tv shows, certainly not ones readily available should a recovery be needed. I can understand more obscure shows but backing up something like The Odyssey would be a colossal waste of storage and money.

(But yes - regardless of what it is, encrypt it)
