Operations at Aleph, where we are building the one source of truth for financial data. In the past, startup guy and, in the distant past, software engineer

espinchi··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (June 2025)
Aleph | Senior Software Engineers (frontend, backend, fullstack) | Fully Remote (ET to PT hours) | Full-time | https://www.getaleph.com

Aleph is an AI-native platform for Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A). We operate in an established software category with a multi-billion market but no clear winner. Our growth has come from product velocity and customer outcomes, not marketing spend, and the results speak for themselves.

We’re backed by top VCs (Bain Capital Ventures, Khosla Ventures, YC, Picus Capital), and work with customers like Eight Sleep, Webflow, Turo, Notion, Zapier and others.

Our tech stack: TypeScript, React, Python, Mongo, GCP

Aleph | REMOTE PT - ET Hours | AI Software Engineers (frontend, backend and fullstack), Account Executive, BDR, Finance Solutions Engineer | https://www.getaleph.com

Aleph is redefining the world of Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A). We operate in a well-defined software category with a multi-billion TAM, yet a lack of a clear winner. We’re here to change that, and our early results speak for themselves.

We’re backed by top VCs (Bain Capital Ventures, Khosla Ventures, YC, Picus Capital), and work with customers like Eight Sleep, Webflow, Turo, Notion, Zapier and others.

What we’ve built so far is the most seamless way to centralize all of a company's financial data – think expenses from Quickbooks or Netsuite, pipeline forecasts from Salesforce – and bring it into the tools finance teams are already using. But the vision goes way beyond that. We’re building the source of truth for a business’ data, and ultimately the platform businesses use to make better decisions.

We’re way ahead of schedule due to our unique approach, with pretty much no churn, and rapid growth despite barely any marketing spend to date.

espinchi··on We are beginning to roll out new voice and image capabilities in ChatGPT
They do explain why in the post. (Still, you may not agree, of course.)

> We are deploying image and voice capabilities gradually > > OpenAI’s goal is to build AGI that is safe and beneficial. We believe in making our tools available gradually, which allows us to make improvements and refine risk mitigations over time while also preparing everyone for more powerful systems in the future. This strategy becomes even more important with advanced models involving voice and vision.

espinchi··on Launch HN: Baseplate (YC W23) – Back end-as-a-service for LLM apps
Makes sense. Also, we wouldn't mind storing that context data in Baseplate, but only selectively and temporarily. As a cache, essentially
espinchi··on Launch HN: Baseplate (YC W23) – Back end-as-a-service for LLM apps
Looks good, congrats on the launch!

If I understand correctly, I'd need to store all the data that may be needed for user queries in Baseplate. That's a blocker for us. Instead, we are developing prompts that first understand what data is relevant to a particular query, then go fetch that data, and then respond to the query (with an additional call to OpenAI). We then discard the context data.

Is this type of mechanism something you are seeing out there and you may support later?

espinchi··on German banks are hoarding so many euros they need more vaults
That's not a thing in (most countries of) Europe any more. I was shocked when I came to the US and saw that checks are still in use
espinchi··on Ask HN: How do you process payments?
At our price range (most invoices are $10k-$50k and in the US), we generate and send invoices from Xero, our accounting software. Customers can pay via check, wire, ACH or Credit Card, and they typically do checks or ACH. For additional context: we automate customer service for ecommerce companies in the 50-500 employee range. Payment methods vary depending on the company size, localization, sector, payment size, etc.
espinchi··on Are we alone? Tiny spacecraft will head to Alpha Centauri to find out
Here's a bunch of startup ideas: http://breakthroughinitiatives.org/challenges/3

I'm mostly kidding. These are hard, hard problems, much better suited to research organizations. Exciting stuff!

espinchi··on Startup incorporation checklist
For bookkeeping I use Xero and love it. Then Expensify for expenses.

For payroll, Gusto (formerly ZenPayroll) is wonderful. I can't emphasize enough how much of a headache this takes away from me.

espinchi··on Masquerade Acquired by Facebook
It's more of an acquihire than an acquisition, I guess.

Hats off for building such an amazing app.

espinchi··on Ask HN: Do you use an old or 'unfashionable' programming language?
Java and XML.

I'm an Android developer.

espinchi··on Genetically modified mosquitoes used to fight dengue, zika in Brazil
I'm sure there's a movie or two that start with a similar headline...
espinchi··on Show HN: Hooks – Stay Up to Date on Anything Through Push Notifications
For a few months. Also, it's one of the few apps I reinstalled when I switched phones. That says something :)
espinchi··on Show HN: Hooks – Stay Up to Date on Anything Through Push Notifications
When I first used it, I got overexcited and configured way too many alerts. But I've been trimming it down heavily, and now a fair percentage of the pushes I get are relevant to me.
espinchi··on Show HN: Hooks – Stay Up to Date on Anything Through Push Notifications
Well it's about push notifications to your phone, so it has to be an app.
espinchi··on Why does programming suck?
> What would programming be to you in an ideal world?

Very interesting thoughts about this. I wouldn't think programming sucks, until you think about how it could be in an ideal world.

I'd love to see a follow-up article about what the OP thinks about that question.

espinchi··on How the 'Quiet Eye' Technique Makes Athletes More Coordinated
They admit most of this is obvious, All of this might seem obvious—after all, “keep your eye on the ball” isn’t exactly a new idea, but then goes on to add that it’s only recently that scientists have had the technology to fully grasp the value of intense visual focus.

Also, apparently it's a difficult skill to master.

I'll try applying this to soccer shots in my game tonight :). (Demostration of effectiveness for penalty kicks: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UnXqmisYKpc)

espinchi··on Militant Atheism (video, 2002)
One of the bits I loved is the discussion on how the word atheist doesn't make much sense (which I've always argued). Non-theist sounds like a good alternative.
espinchi··on Notify by Facebook is a Hooks clone?
Well, depending on how optimistic you wake up, this is either a disaster or pretty good news for Hooks :)

espinchi··on Mobile App Developers Are Suffering
We are suffering, but we won't give up so easily.

I am in the top 1-2% of Android developers [1], and while I've found it relatively easy to reach decent traction with a few apps (say 1000 downloads a day, or say $1000 a month), it is very challenging to keep an app in the very top (25k downloads a day, or making more than $15k a month) for very long.

You can put a good fight during your first month, since you can make it very high in the "Top New" rankings, but after that you are against the big guys.

As the article says, paid promotion is a prohibitive channel. At the usual free to paid conversion rates, making ads pay off is extremely difficult.

These two points the article makes are flat out wrong:

> The search function is unusable unless you know the name of the app you’re looking for

Absolutely no. SEO (we call it ASO in the app store) is important, and keyword search is a definitely a source of organic installs.

> This means that unless you actively manage your reviews, expect to have a 2–3 star average.

No way, a high quality app can have a 4.5+, and many decent ones have at least 4.0+.

espinchi··on New Top Level Domain: .cern
Here's the official announcement: http://cds.cern.ch/journal/CERNBulletin/2015/43/Announcement...
espinchi··on ZenPayroll is now Gusto
Well, not necessarily. Starting off with a more accurate keyword (payroll) and then broadening it up as you extend your service (benefits) makes sense to me, and I'm far from having an MBA.

Also, the prefix "zen" is being a little bit abused these days.

espinchi··on ZenPayroll is now Gusto
It was solved with a lot of tedious, manual work. I've been using ZenPayroll for the last few months, and I was surprised at how well done it is, how easy it is to use.
