esher··on So you want to build your own data center
I can relate.

We provide a small PaaS-like hosting service, kinda similar to Railway (but more niche). We have recently re-elaborated our choice for AWS (since $$$) as infra provider, but will now stick to it [1].

We started with colocation 20 years ago. For a tiny provider it was quite a hustle (but also an experience). We just had too many single point of failures and we found ourselves dealing with physical servers way too often. We also struggled to fade out and replace hardware.

Without reading all the comments thoroughly: For me, being on infra that runs on green energy is important. I think it's also a trend with customers, there even service for this [2]. I don't see it mentioned here.

esher··on 1 in 5 online job postings are either fake or never filled, study finds
Not sure if that is mentioned with the comments already. I am currently trying to hire a remote developer (real posting) and I have to battle with 'fake applications' with super generic CVs and intros, individually created by AI for specific jobs [2,3,4]. I assume that there are humans behind it in most cases.

esher··on How to NOT get a job interview at our small startup
Thanks for sharing. You are right. A good developer will pick up skills even other languages quickly. Yet we will favor someone who knows the ecosystem.

I had an application today that was made by JobScan. I understand a service that helps you to match your CV to the proposed position. I dunno. I smelled it was too generic. Then I examined the PDF and I found the creator JobScan.

My personal experience is that I spoke to a lot of great candidates from Nigeria. Our last hire is from NG too.

esher··on How to NOT get a job interview at our small startup
Thanks. Certainly. Sometimes I like to blog when the pain is fresh. It helps. Potentially also has a lot of typos. Yes. Let's embrace typos as long as we have them.

Corporate experience per se is not bad. Somebody with that experience might help is us to thrive. Yet, somebody who is close to us and our target audience is also valuable. I tend to prefer the later. You can consider us unprofessional tinkerers.

The side channel applications are just too hard to keep track of. I manually need to copy things over.

Why yes, many people is PHP as dated itself. That's OK :)

Wrote this small rant realizing that the majority of job applications is fully or partially AI forged. What are we heading to?

Looks like the banner is opt-out rather than opt-in. Do you need 150+ legitimate interest partners and what for?
esher··on Hetzner Object Storage
$ 5.99 / € 4.99 a month, includes 1 TB of storage and 1 TB of egress traffic.
esher··on You need 4 colors
In defense of the project I have to say that I like the color naming of 'primary', 'secondary', 'tertiary', plus some 'accent' color.
esher··on Kubernetes on Hetzner: cutting my infra bill by 75%
This does not apply to Hetzner US data centers, as far as I know. That's just for Germany and Finland.
esher··on Kubernetes on Hetzner: cutting my infra bill by 75%
Thanks for sharing. I care about it. I run a small hosting company. Sure, there are many low hanging fruits for fighting CO2 emissions that should be tackled first. I am also hopeful that energy from directly available renewables will be the most economic choice for building data centers anyhow, so that this is not a matter of believes any more.

But on the other side, to bring down CO2 levels, fast change everywhere is required. As far as I see data center energy consumption continues to grow, specifically with AI.

If I am not mistaken, data centers produce more CO2 than aviation.

And sure, most 'green hosting' is probably 'green washing', yet I would still support and link initiatives such as: https://www.thegreenwebfoundation.org/

esher··on Kubernetes on Hetzner: cutting my infra bill by 75%
As far as I see, no one is mentioning sustainability AKA environmental impact or 'green hosting' here. Don't you care about that?

I believe that Hetzner data centers in Europe (Germany, Finland) are powered by green energy, but not the locations in US.

esher··on ChatGPT provides false information about people, and OpenAI can't correct it
Popcorn time: NOYB (Max Schrems) filed a complaint against OpenAI with the Austrian DPA: ChatGPT is not GDPR compliant.
esher··on PHP in 2024
Posts related to PHP usually become discussion if the language sucks or not here on HN. I am co-founder of a PHP PaaS and I can confirm that almost all clients are using frameworks or even CMS systems on top of PHP to build stuff. Why not?

I am interested how PHP and frontend tooling will work out in the future. Nobody is compiling JS/CSS with PHP (as far as I see). That is usually done with Node.js. Livewire (and Inertia.js) are bridges. Sometimes PHP becomes a backend to provide an API for an SPA frontend.

esher··on The tyranny of inconsistent keyboard shortcuts
Author here. I was pointed to existing software solutions. There are for sure browser extensions. For macOS there is a (free) App [customShortcuts by Houdah](https://www.houdah.com/customShortcuts/), which also is compatible with [KeyClu](https://github.com/Anze/KeyCluCask).

What do you use? What am I missing.

esher··on Security Through Obscurity
In other words — design your system assuming that your opponents know it in detail. (A former official at NSA's National Computer Security Center told me that the standard assumption there was that serial number 1 of any new device was delivered to the Kremlin.)

esher··on Acquia, my Drupal startup
Thanks HN for bringing this up again. I never fully understood what Acquia does and might never will. But it seems to go well, which is hopefully good for Dries. I respect when the open source project and the business behind it are clearly separated.
