esbwhat··on Beta Late Than Never (Steam Linux Beta)

esbwhat··on Open source author pulls code after GPL abuse
redistribution in a non-compatible license is also a GPL violation. Source present or not. You can't release a forked GPL product under e.g. the BSD license
esbwhat··on The innovations of Internet Explorer
Google does have a conflict of interest. The best case scenario is a better internet, but only for google products for them.

People love google, but it's a for-profit company, not a foundation. Chrome would not be the first abandoned project, either. Anything can happen. Competition is good.

esbwhat··on The innovations of Internet Explorer
This is the reason why I'm scared of google pushing chrome so hard
esbwhat··on Why Fukushima Was Preventable
Fair enough -- I should have informed myself better before commenting/making judgements.
esbwhat··on Why Fukushima Was Preventable
I don't think it's really relevant. The point is not that there is a way to have safe nuclear energy, the point is that the worst case scenario is catastrophic, and that I don't trust any company or government to do what's necessary, especially if they're strapped for cash.
esbwhat··on MPEG claims its new standard H.265 halves video bandwidth with no quality loss
So 15 more years, basically. Man, that's depressing. What's fast becoming the standard for HTML5 video has 15 more years of not being truly free. I wonder what mozilla will do about that.
esbwhat··on MPEG claims its new standard H.265 halves video bandwidth with no quality loss
on that note, does anyone know what patents for h.264 are still valid, and for how much longer? I've been looking for that info for quite a while now, without success.
esbwhat··on Craigslist now asks for exclusive license when posting
Why don't they just add a damn map mode already? I get it, they don't want to change "the secret formula", so make craigslistmapper.com as an extension of craigslist. Everyone who doesn't want to deal with mapping can stay at craigslist.
esbwhat··on Sparrow made downloadable to conform to LGPL
not under the gpl, you can't
esbwhat··on Gabe Newell Wants to Support Linux, Because Windows 8 is a 'Catastrophe'
This is not how that works -- if you buy a game for windows on steam, the mac version is free. I've tried this personally, and I expect the same will be true for linux as well. In other words, pay once, get the game for all OS', updating automatically, and all connected to the same account so you can chat to windows and mac players through the steam client
esbwhat··on Gittip stats
is there a way to sign up for an account, or is that planned? I don't like signing into things with google/whatever
esbwhat··on Gittip stats
so basically sort of a reverse kickstarter for open source. That's brilliant. I love it.

I would sponsor someone fixing moving selections in gimp. I cannot figure out how to do it. There has to be a more intuitive method.

esbwhat··on New Chrome feature frees Web apps from the browser
Completely bypassing any standards bodies, as usual, I assume. No thanks.

I'll stick to the browser made by a foundation, not a for-profit company trying to gain control over the web. I remember IE6.

esbwhat··on Sprite Cow: Generate CSS for sprite sheets
this seems to temporarily take out my firefox for a minute or so. Not immediately, just after using it a bit.
esbwhat··on The Whiskey Rebellion
It's definitely not the worst, but I don't think they should have asked him at all, and (more importantly) let him redirect the old site for more than a year.
esbwhat··on The Whiskey Rebellion
not as nice as they were in the case of ilovejackdaniels.com:

esbwhat··on Sparrow for Windows was just a few weeks away
Agreed! Maybe it can take a life on it's own. No use shedding tears over what's done, but open sourcing it would at least mean there is a net gain for the world from it all.
esbwhat··on Apple will reject any app containing a mic icon
It needs to have a clear silhouette though.
esbwhat··on The reality of the Ouya console doesn’t match the hype
"We break things. Julie Uhrman has been in games for a long time, at Vivendi Universal, IGN, GameFly, and other places. Yves Behar is the award-winning designer of Jambox, One Laptop per Child, and many others. There are plenty of other people involved, but some of them would get fired if we tell you who they are."

Sounds like they have hardware experience

esbwhat··on Why does parseInt(1/0, 19) return 18?
this wouldn't actually solve the problem for base 36, though.
esbwhat··on About the future of Thunderbird
I think people reporting it just overstated the news that feature development will be stopped in saying it's dead. Mozilla's plan seems consistent.
esbwhat··on Clang reaches funding target
800k for linux? that seems a bit excessive considering the engine already supports it
esbwhat··on Why Mark Zuckerberg is A Terrible Role Model
or if you zoom the page (as I do with almost all sites I visit. I'm not sure if I have bad eyes or just sit away further from the monitor than most people)
esbwhat··on Adobe Flash API ported to Dart
I've never used it, but jangaroo seems promising

http://www.jangaroo.net/home/

Example:

esbwhat··on Adobe Flash API ported to Dart
The example game keeps crashing for me after playing a bit in Firefox.

if you want to code html5 flash, I hear another alternative is jangaroo

esbwhat··on Google Service Drops Support for Opera
The c't had a good opening "story" about this a couple months back. I, for one, will keep using firefox even if chrome is tempting, because I haven't forgotten what happened the last time someone got a monopoly on the browser market: The stiflement of web evolution for a decade.

And make no mistake, IE6 was revolutionary at it's time too.

Google is abusing it's monopoly on search and other things to convert people to chrome. Good, in many ways (if you visit google with an old IE, it displays a chrome ad). But now that I think about it, I'd rather have to bear IE for a year or two than give google the power over what becomes part of the web and what doesn't. Anyone remember flash?

esbwhat··on The Next Microsoft
I'm no designer, but aren't logos supposed to be recognizable? This is a geometric shape, why not just use a square for the logo, or a triangle?

Would people really associate this shape (which isn't particularly unique and probably not even trademark-able) with microsoft when they see it? I have my doubts

Also unrelatedly, the missing i-dot is really throwing me off (probably just because I am used to it)

esbwhat··on Louis C.K. sees ticket scalping drop over 96% by selling tickets himself
Perhaps the refund isn't digital? I.e. you get refunded at the entrance if you have a scalped ticket
