‘Keeping up with the Cardassians’
erybodyknows··on What's SAP, and why's it worth $163B? (2020)
Likely because of B2B vs B2C. Individual users can easily switch when a better solution appears on the market. Business use cases tend to involve a little more friction in those decisions.
erybodyknows··on Purring is a love language no human can speak
Parent likely meant a vocal trill, similar to “rolling your r’s”.

Virtue can be practiced and even observed without being signalled.
erybodyknows··on BMW Makes Heated Seats an $18/Month Subscription Service – Again
Would something like this be locally jailbreak-able? Do newer vehicles require a phone-home verification of some sort to function?
erybodyknows··on Lessons from Dungeons and Dragons about storytelling (2013)
If fact, I would argue that the juxtaposition of the main characters being essentially polar opposite’s is what gives the show most of its effective (dark) comedic moments.
erybodyknows··on Lessons from Dungeons and Dragons about storytelling (2013)
It explores both. Some characters are cynical. Others, like (one of) the main characters Huey, is a hopeless romantic who believes in the basic goodness of people and doing the right thing. He also listens to a lot of Billy Joel.
erybodyknows··on Flowers for Algernon (1965) [pdf]
I just read this story for the first time and gathered similar insights on character, intelligence, and personal excellence.

What stood out to me most was that he consistently tried to excel with what he was given. To do better for himself, and to help those around him.

Another point that stood out to me is that from his most gifted vantage point, he correctly identifies the all too human fallibility of his Scientific Observers. Jealousy, greed, and feelings of inferiority.

erybodyknows··on LMN 3, an open source DAW in a box [video]
Agreed. It is more akin to a “live performance DAW” like Ableton Live, without the PC middleman.
erybodyknows··on AI Wrote and Performed a Jerry Seinfeld Routine [video]
I still imagine Seinfeld doing this bit with an increasing intensity and widened eyes as it progresses to infinity.
erybodyknows··on Heightened dream recall ability linked to increased creativity, connectivity
I’ve always theorized that dreams, or at least the interpretation of them, are primarily emotional states that our minds attempt to backfill with logic or narrative structure upon awakening. Even when attempting to remember the details they seem to slip away and transmutate. However the general “sense” or feeling remains.
erybodyknows··on When Your Smart ID Card Reader Comes With Malware
I would love to read more about this. Has she published her findings?
erybodyknows··on I decided to move away from big tech for my children and myself
Addiction has very little to do with knowledge (or lack thereof), and everything to do with feelings/emotions and their management.
erybodyknows··on Instagram Is Facebook Now
Serious consideration: they are embracing this reality as their primary long-term strategy, anticipating their becoming the defacto “metaverse” virtual world that older people wish to be plugged into. I can clearly see a future in which users can sign over all current and future retirement funds and financial assets, and in exchange be plugged full-time into a “facebook disneyland” to live out the rest of their years in digitally augmented bliss as an avatar alongside friends and family.
erybodyknows··on Assume everyone is stupid, lazy and possibly insane, including you
I really appreciate this world view. As far as mental models go, it pre-supposes with a curious intent.
erybodyknows··on Launch HN: Turion Space (YC S21) – Space debris removal and satellite servicing
Interesting problem space and solution. Question, is there any value in the raw materials contained in the debris? Would it be feasible to aggregate/collect a certain, let’s say, “value threshold” of debris that makes it economically reasonable to return a bulk payload back to earth? Even if the answer is currently “no”, it seems like harvesting essentially free materials and suspending them en masse in a controlled orbit makes a lot of sense. Eventually groups will want to fabricate in space, and you could have the raw materials ready to provide.
