erubin··on New data show that joining the 1% remains unsettlingly hereditary
does the survey check a few classes or a large sample?

Between folks still in graduate school, in their early careers, people who have left the workforce to have kids or pursue lower paying jobs because they have financial security, you might end up with a smaller group than you expect putting in all the hours to make top 1% income.

erubin··on United Airlines Domestic Flights Grounded for 2 Hours by Computer Outage
I have no reason to believe that there's any malice involved here.

I also think that incidents like this might become more common as the state of cyber warfare progresses. As engineers, we should take care to build secure software, especially when that software underlies important systems. We should impress upon non-technical management the importance of doing so, even if it may take a little more time or money in the short term.

erubin··on EU: Robot Workers Are 'Electronic Persons'
the people displaced by the robots do, and more than ever.
erubin··on Ask HN: Is it possible to make $200K/year base salary?
I'm not sure why you don't consider stock in a public company that you can immediately sell every monthly vesting period liquid.
erubin··on Americans Are Putting Billions More Than Usual in Their 401(k)s
It's true that many tech workers are eventually affected by the contribution limit, but my understanding is that it's essentially always smart to contribute to tax-advantaged accounts while possible.
erubin··on Princeton University Math Major Course Guide
I wish I had done math. I got scared by 203.

erubin··on Learning to Read X86 Assembly Language
the lower levels of optimizations are supposed to be more straightforward translations of the high-level language code. you can imagine this might be useful if you are debugging assembly.
erubin··on Algorithms and Data Structures: Trie (Prefix tree)
When algorithms matter, you do get a lot of performance out of a better algorithm. But I actually recently wrote an admittedly not production ready trie extension in C and it was about five lines of SWIG to use it from python.
erubin··on Employee #1: Amazon
A lot of money to be sure, but he'd have an order of magnitude or two more if he were the last cofounder instead of the first employee.
erubin··on Show HN: Neural network trained to generate GitHub repository names
The blog post is really excellent.
erubin··on Ask HN: Examples of reliable software you enjoy using
Logic is music production software.
erubin··on How I welcomed an immigrant family with a Linux laptop
One charity that I contribute to is GiveDirectly[1]. They are one of GiveWell's[2] highest rated charities and are quite transparent about the impact they have. GiveDirectly is also currently experimenting with basic income and have matching donations for that project.

erubin··on Twilio opens trading at $23.99 per share
I used Twilio to make a simple SMS wrapper around an app. It took maybe 30 minutes and I had never used it before. Very cool product.
erubin··on Web Service Efficiency at Instagram with Python
Anyone can bake a cake. It's a lot harder to bake a billion cakes.
erubin··on Efficient way to search a stream for a string
Is there a reason why nobody suggested the Rabin-Karp algorithm (modular hashing)? It is also no-backup and conveniently allows searching for multiple strings in the stream.
erubin··on My Google Interview and Lessons Learned
I believe it is not legal to use actual IQ tests in the U.S.
erubin··on How to Worry Less About Being a Bad Programmer
I definitely agree with this. It's very cool to see something you've built actually work more-or-less correctly. In science all I get are maybes.
erubin··on A Reboot of the Legendary Physics Site ArXiv Could Shape Open Science
posted behind a paywall on wired...
erubin··on Python Generator comprehensions
is the difference between a generator and the rest that generators are lazy?
erubin··on When code is suspiciously fast: adventures in dead code elimination
this is a case of the programmer calling his function inside an assert macro, which disappears in the preprocessing step when you compile with -D NDEBUG
erubin··on Preparing for the Future of Artificial Intelligence
The folks here commenting about entrenched power structures should remember that Ed Felten (who put his name on the release) is not a career bureaucrat at all.
erubin··on Proselint
Can I use this with latex?
erubin··on A New Breed of Trader on Wall Street: Coders with a Ph.D
If there's one place where just about everyone I know has done job interviews, it's jane street. They cast a very wide net.
erubin··on First Draft of 300-Page Princeton Bitcoin Textbook [pdf]
Arvind is one of my favorite profs. I look forward to reading it.
