E-ink wouldn't line-up with anything without knowing there is only one observer and the coordinates of that observer. It would be better, cheaper, and simpler to have an inflatable replica of whatever it is.

It looks like an accordion of paper dolls because it's a Draken printed on the roof of a movable shelter.
errcorrectcode··on Mysterious aircraft spotted at Area 51 in satellite image
Only if your imaging satellite had X-ray vision. Have a look again. You wouldn't put a no-roof shelter over a plane, and you wouldn't be able to see what's inside. Use common sense.

That's what it looks like to me from the unnatural bends and shadows in the silhouette. The photograph is Big Foot-quality, so it really doesn't matter what it was.
errcorrectcode··on The Banning of “Maus.” It’s Dumber Than You Think
Bias is only complained about when people passive-aggressively bring their politics into a situation to warp the subject and distract.

There is no such thing as "unbiased" reporting, just as it is impossible to "eliminate racism" or "eliminate rape". Journalists aren't robots. Anyone who tells you they're "unbiased" is either a liar or a fool. Reasonable and accurate reporting, without word weaseling or playing favorites, is honest journalism.

I'm baffled there is such obvious hairsplitting on this on HN, of all places, against a notable educational book about the freakin Holocaust. One of my college roommates was assigned this text in a contemporary literature course as it was and is a contemporary historical fiction graphic novel.
errcorrectcode··on The Banning of “Maus.” It’s Dumber Than You Think
Exactly. Banning a book about the Holocaust and saying it's not banning reeks of the appearance of Holocaust denialism, white nationalism, and/or antisemitism.

To avoid difficult, real subjects is to lie to children and make them into ignorant, naive, uneducated adults.

errcorrectcode··on The Banning of “Maus.” It’s Dumber Than You Think
Holocaust denialism has no place here.
errcorrectcode··on The Banning of “Maus.” It’s Dumber Than You Think
Let's just pretend the Holocaust didn't happen. Moonbeams, rainbows, and sunshine all the time. Oh and definitely don't teach the Armenian Genocide, WW1, WW2, The Trail of Tears, or slavery because that would hurt someones feewlings.

Get real or be ignorant.

I watched a recent interview of Art Spiegelman just this week on Democracy Now!. IIRC, he flatly called the 10 voting board members "baffling" and "stupid" for banning it for a naked corpse of a cartoon mouse, hanged mice (like what happened), and saying "God damn" while being genocided!

https://www.democracynow.org/2022/2/2/art_spiegelman_maus_a_...

PS: Book bans are the best form of promotion ever. Thank you stupid people! I hope it makes Art richer to promote sanity and education.

errcorrectcode··on Silenced AirTags with disabled speakers are popping up for sale online
Anecdotal regional issue:

I had an AirTag on my AirPod Pro's case that was stolen. I immediately notified Austin's police (APD) as I could see where it was going. Unfortunately, due to understaffing of 100-200 police officers and detectives, most calls unrelated to imminent threats of injury or death aren't being handle for days or ever. So, it's open-season on packages and property because APD can't or won't do its job, even if you tell them where stolen property is located. As long as a crime is nonviolent or the threat of violence has passed (with the exception of rape), ATX has the security measures of a third-world country. I met a UT campus police officer who refuses to live in or bring his family to ATX because of the risks and de facto lawlessness.

OLAP isn't a technology and it didn't go away. That's an approach your and many other orgs have been using for decades to do data warehousing. NoSQLs definitely didn't go away.

The need for denormalized data and data warehousing will never go away.

errcorrectcode··on Genealogy of Relational Database Management Systems [pdf]
Prolog isn't a DBMS, it's a functional / logic programming language. It doesn't store tables or operate on relational algebra.

How would you CRUD data DDL, DQL, DML, DCL, TCL against tables (not facts or variables) without SQL? Magic?

And why are you cobbling queries together manually and not using an ORM or library? SMH.

errcorrectcode··on Genealogy of Relational Database Management Systems [pdf]
Some people think maintaining bank accounts on Mongo would be a good idea.

ACID, locking, referential integrity, SQL (language flavors and RE DBMSes) aren't appreciated, probably due to a lack of CS education.

R:BASE isn't listed, an important PC relational DBMS.

Postgres / Enterprise DB converges towards compatibility with Oracle DBMS.

errcorrectcode··on Show HN: Coffeehouse, one-on-one voicechat with random HN users
It's great that something was built. Amen.

Similar problems to chatroulette, i.e., cyberdisinhibitionism, backgrounds/communication impedance mismatches, although hopefully not as many flashers.

My luck, I'd get the homeless guy at the coffee shop breathing into the microphone saying "I never use my real name. And, I always wear extra tin foil in winter when the mind beams are stronger. The FBI has a file on me a mile high. They're out to get me. Do you hear those voices too?" (This is based on the personality of a real, harmless person who did live in 24 hour coffeeshops in SV.)

errcorrectcode··on Competitive Programming with AlphaCode
That will happen faster than you can conceive because you won't be aware of the progress until it is announced.

And, have you tried polling? I hear it keeps the CPU warm in winter. Interrupts are so ... this just in, Nike's stock jump 3% ... Where was I? Did I save my task context properly? Did I reenable interrupts?

Gross and not portable C99.

    #define B6 (1<<5)
    #define B17 (1<<16)

    unsigned swapbits(unsigned a) {
       return ((a & B6 == a & B17) ? a : (a ^ (B6 | B17)));
    }

Here's some BFP:

    unsigned swapbits(unsigned a) {
       unsigned flip = (a & B6 == a & B17);
       return (a ^ ((flip<<5) | (flip<<16)));
    }

int and double are C's implicit lingua francas for underspecified literals and implicit type conversions. Throwing int everywhere is redundant like "ATM machine."

And this is how we reach the technological singularity and how programmers become as equivalently out-of-demand as piano tuners: self-programming systems.

AI will eat any and all knowledge work because there's very little special a human can do that a machine won't be able to do eventually, and much faster and better. It won't be tomorrow, but the sands are inevitably shifting this way.

errcorrectcode··on Reduced-hours software development engineer position at Amazon
Yes. Communication and availability overlap is important to get certain kinds of things unblocked. Plus, career-wise, it's bad to be a vampire no one ever meets or sees regardless of electronic responsiveness within their working hours.

Although, I think butt-in-seat mentality was always broken if an employee could broadcast or interact from anywhere. There are certain kinds of pair programming, whiteboarding, co-design, collab, and conversations that lead to higher signal in-person vs. remote.

errcorrectcode··on Reduced-hours software development engineer position at Amazon
LOLs. I just read an Reddit item that "morale terrible at one FAANG and everyone's leaving". It wasn't Meta or Google, so that sorta narrows it down. Coincidentally, I met someone leaving AWS.

You can have the best business model and product in the world, but if you abuse your employees, they will leave (or unionize) and it will all come tumbling down.

Ah, blast from the past. HE brought us T-1's, T-3's, and IPv6 transit way back.

Equinix owns PAIX on 529 Bryant St. as SV8.

It's interesting how racks still aren't so much volume-, mass-, or network bandwidth-/transit-constrained, but power-constrained.

Well not just energy capacity [J/kg = m^2/s^2 = 1/3600 W hr/kg], but power capacity [W/kg = J/(kg s) = m^2/s^3] too.
