erikbye··on Childhood Computing
My childhood was PCBoard, POV-Ray, then later Lightwave, 3ds Max, Bryce. WADs, Hammer Editor, GTkRadiant, both of the scenes. Sierra and Lucasarts games... Turbo Pascal!
erikbye··on GitHub is having issues now
Made my own github alternative ways back. Kind of like cgit on steroids. I only use github for free backup now.
erikbye··on I cancelled Claude: Token issues, declining quality, and poor support
I'm building a C++ game engine from scratch with CC. Renderer is Vulkan, no wrappers. Around 30k LoC now, quite a ways to go yet, but CC has been doing fine overall. Of course "he" runs in circles sometimes, but I always manage to nudge him back on track.
erikbye··on Show HN: Hacker Smacker – Spot great (and terrible) HN commenters at a glance
Comments from your "preferred commenter" are like songs from your favorite band, sometimes they disappoint you.
erikbye··on I’m joining OpenAI
Right. Shopify apps, too, is a gold mine.

It's funny to me how still so many don't realize you don't get hired for the best positions for being a 10x programmer who excels at hackerrank, you get hired for your proven ability to deliver useful products. Creativity, drive, vision, whatever. Code is a means to an end. If you're the type of programmer who thinks of yourself as just a programmer, and take pride in your secure code, ability to optimize functions and algorithms, you're exactly the kind of programmer AI will replace.

Quality of code has never had anything to do with which products are successful. I bet both youtube and facebook's codebase is a tangled mess.

erikbye··on Netflix Animation Studios Joins the Blender Development Fund as Corporate Patron
Compared to Microsoft Office suite, Libre suite is definitely not slow.
erikbye··on I dumped Windows 11 for Linux, and you should too
Davinci Resolve for video editing. It's what I'd use on Windows, as well.

Lightroom vs Gimp does not make sense, should be Gimp vs Photoshop if anything.

For photos you can use digikam + darktable/rawtherapee.

erikbye··on I dumped Windows 11 for Linux, and you should too
Which two specific functions?
erikbye··on I dumped Windows 11 for Linux, and you should too
Compared to which software? Ableton? Reaper? Did you use RT kernel? JACK or ALSA? Pipewire?

DE will also affect performance.

erikbye··on Claude Code CLI was broken
I read or heard somewhere at least 80% of CC is written by CC and Aider (before CC was mature enough)
erikbye··on Show HN: Gemini Pro 3 imagines the HN front page 10 years from now
C posts still make the front page here and there
erikbye··on Cloudflare was down
Cloudflare uptime has worsened a lot lately, AI coding has increased exponentially, hmm
erikbye··on Cloudflare was down
This is getting embarrassing.
erikbye··on Claude outage
* Sublimating...
erikbye··on Claude outage
Point me your repo, I want to see if AI can improve it.
erikbye··on Claude outage
It's a reminder to not rely on a single service.

Logic not strong in this thread.

erikbye··on Claude outage
Doubtful all services are ever down simultaneously, either way:

What do devs do when Github or Gitlab is down?

AWS? GCP? Azure?

Or whatever Atlassian product they're using.

Plus, most devs do a bit more than just produce lines of code.

erikbye··on How I, a non-developer, read the tutorial you, a developer, wrote for me
The title here is beginner developer, but the article states non-developer.

Nevertheless, dev docs are usually written for reasonably experienced developers, but new to specific framework/library.

These docs would be too long-winded if they were to account for non-devs/complete beginners.

Please, don't cater to that audience in your docs.

erikbye··on Introducing a terms of use and updated privacy notice for Firefox
Switched to Vivaldi long time ago. For reasons like this, ToS, Mozilla changing their mission, etc.

Vivaldi respects your privacy, supports Chrome extensions, and all the customizations you'd ever need.

erikbye··on Half-Life
Hah, that reminds me how I started leakfree.org, where Black Mesa got started. That was a long time ago.
erikbye··on What is Toybox?
The explanation is in the first sentence. How much clearer could he be?
erikbye··on The Guide to Git I Never Had
What's the other version control you use?
erikbye··on Most of Europe is glowing pink under the aurora
Here's a few crappy phone pics from near Oslo on a night (evening, around 19 I think) it was very visible with the naked eye. 0.5 seconds exposure.

erikbye··on Most of Europe is glowing pink under the aurora
Come to the arctic circle during polar night, then you will see impressive.
erikbye··on Most of Europe is glowing pink under the aurora
Our eyes definitely do not see "pretty much without the color". Born and raised in Norway I've watched more aurora borealis than I care to count. On many occassions you could see all kinds of colors and dancing lights with the naked eye, very strong and vivid, too. Important to be in a dark environment without light pollution. At the arctic circle during polar night you will see northern lights that almost match the most stunning photos you have seen.
erikbye··on The Guide to Git I Never Had
I don't get the "git has horrible user interface" crowd. Never had a problem understanding git or its commands. It's probably the least complicated tool in my box, and the one that has given me least trouble.

What exactly is so bad about the ux?

Are the ones having trouble people that's never used another CVS? Is it CLI aversion?

erikbye··on Pyinfra: Automate Infrastructure Using Python
Is performance better than Ansible? I have used Ansible extensively and find it excruciatingly slow.
erikbye··on What contributing to Open-source is, and what it isn't
It's more that I don't agree with what he considers the four or so proper ways to contribute. I also know of longstanding and highly valued contributors who started out in ways the author disapproves of.
erikbye··on What contributing to Open-source is, and what it isn't
Another red flag is "I use Arch Linux, btw"
