erik_landerholm··on Securing a Rails App against Firesheep with HTTPS
I would recommend not doing https in rails. I use nginx to switch between http and https when needed.

in your nginx config you do this for https setup: # needed for HTTPS proxy_set_header X-FORWARDED-PROTO https;

then if you want, you can check in rails that certain controllers received https requests.

using nginx as proxy means your rails app only ever deals with plain text http.

the only issue, with all http -> https transitions is making sure that things you are storing in sessions are placed in your forms if you go from a http page to an https page on form submission. If not you will lose state if you are storing sessions in the cookies.

The part about relative urls is right. Using cdns etc makes things harder if they don't support your ssl cert.

At CarWoo! once you login we do everything behind https. For our user creation form you can be on an http page, but it submits to https.

We created partials that represent our sign up forms (we have many kinds of landing pages) that automatically take important things out of the session and put them in the form if needed. These things are not security risks, but are important for the correct functionality of the app.

Awesome! I'm glad you had a awesome experience. We are constantly striving to do better.
erik_landerholm··on I will miss the old Y Combinator
I was in YCS09 (CarWoo!). The 150k would not of changed anything we did when it came to being frugal.

We would of still lived in our office (not in an apartment that was our office, but in our office that was our apartment).

We would of still rented a total crap hole in not the greatest part of town. It might of helped WePay not have a neighbor who got macheted because we all wouldn't of had to live in the slums. It might of helped us not live next to other tenets that were growing weed and getting raided by the cops. The day we moved out the cops raided them. We had armed police officers in our hallway. These 'stories', while hilarious are not conducive to a good working environment.

I'm older then most entrepreneurs YC funds. Tommy is also older then most. A bit more money up front would of been very helpful and wouldn't of changed our drive or decision making one bit, except to make us not worry about raising money until later. And that would of been a good thing. Raising money stole a fifth to a quarter of our time during YC.

We always knew we would need more money. Right out of YC we raised another 200k. It was very stressful because if that didn't work out we were up the proverbial creek. Having that 150k up front would of helped ease a lot of sleepless nights...listening to our neighbors scream and yell as they tried to hang a sodium light, but I digress.

erik_landerholm··on Why $150k for YC companies is a huge deal
Not the same thing at all. Most funds just follow the stock market's performance. They are at the mercy of the market fluctuations. What this investment is saying is that Yuri believes strongly that YC has the ability to pick winners more often then not. And they do it often enough that it's not even worth his time to do anymore diligence.

He is saying that if he spent a bunch of time on each company the odds of him doing better then YC has already done is not worth the extra effort. He is betting he can get a good return by just trusting PG and company's judgment. Pretty awesome endorsement, imo.

erik_landerholm··on Why $150k for YC companies is a huge deal
This is what everyone should take away from this. What he is really saying is the diligence and track record of YC is good enough that he doesn't need to do any more diligence himself.

If that isn't the highest level endorsement possible I don't know what is.

erik_landerholm··on Hacker Shows It Doesn’t Take $8 Million to Clone Qwiki
The same thing could of been said about twitter when it first came out. Recreating the feature set would of been very easy, but ultimately the feature set was not what made them successful.
erik_landerholm··on What Drives a Startup Founder?
The ever present threat of having to work at a big company...again.
erik_landerholm··on Facebook is what happens to the Web when you hit it with the stupid stick
More and more I find that for people I see in real life facebook has become fairly redundant. And facebook has just clarified the reason that I don't see most of my other 'friends' in real life; I'm not really friends with them anymore.
erik_landerholm··on Facebook and the Hoodie
I thought this post was about Bill Belichick on facebook. He's been "The Hoodie" since Zuck was in middle school.

Also, both are very, maybe the most successful in their respective professions. Maybe we all should begin wearing more hoodies.

This is not news or anything anyone should care about.

having a regression test of some kind is always good. You don't have to test everything, but at least have something you can run each time you change it to make sure the basics work.
erik_landerholm··on Why Quora Will Never Be as Big as Twitter
yeah, it's cool right now. but, to get big they are going to have to let the 'unwashed masses' in. Expect more questions like, "why is paris hilton such a sloot?" and less about interesting topics with interesting answers.

Once that happens, and it will have to happen for them to have the number of users that twitter or facebook has it will descend into yahoo answer hell. I don't see how they avoid that and get mass user adoption.

"A Christmas Story" is pretty great christmas movie. One of the greatest scenes is when Ralphie decodes the secret orphan annie message. I changed it a bit so that someone wouldn't just guess it.

it seemed fitting as it is the only encoded message in any holiday movie I could think of! :)

Those 5 characters represent the first "T". Another "T" won't necessarily result in the same code. Actually, the odds of ever seeing that code again for a "T" is low.

It never encodes things the same each time your run it, but they can all be decoded the same way. There are no strange initial conditions you need to know about like time or some other kind of token.

erik_landerholm··on Portland wants to transform its software culture into an industry
You are right to be skeptical.

The reason why i say it is doomed is (i'm not sure it's this plan so i could be jumping the gun) because one of the plans that is being implemented we were interviewed by one of 'LPs' and the info about how the 'funding' works was very sketchy.

It pretty much boiled down to pick 4-6 companies and give them loans that can be called back at roughly anytime and are personally guaranteed.

When we (my partner and I) looking for money in portland and working on our start-up at the same time even giving BrainTree a few thousand bucks as guarantee was out of the question. The idea that any young, early start-up wants loans with personal guarantees makes no sense. If anything just get 5-6 credit cards and max them out to finance it. It's easier.

erik_landerholm··on Portland wants to transform its software culture into an industry
As someone that tried very hard to raise even a little money in Portland before getting into Ycombinator and ultimately raising 6 million this idea is DOOMED.

We did the Portland Angel Fund (or whatever it's called) American Idol off for start-ups...total joke. The whole industry is dominated by 'service providers' that look to charge start-ups for everything while writing no checks.

They actually asked us to come back and speak at one of their conventions and wanted to charge us almost $400.

There is no follow on capital. There is no entrepreneur culture. I love Portland and Oregon (grew up there, went to OSU), but this is a waste of time and money.

erik_landerholm··on CarWoo (YC S09) promises car buyers hassle-free quotes, raises $4.2M
We have given people their money back for losing their down payment in a poker game.

Charging buyers means we are 100% committed to the consumer and not beholden to dealers unlike every site on the internet.
