erickhill··on Why the Black MacBook Cost More
I was really searching for the "Why," since the title implied the article held an explicit answer beyond, "Because."

Thanks for the detailed information. I appreciate it.

I actually have no idea what you just said (and you can believe it). But I'll Google "local decryption proxy" and see if that's something feasible I could try with, say, my Powerbook Pismo running macOS 9.2 with no modern browsers. I'm no engineer, so please don't assume everyone here is.
erickhill··on Plain Text Sports
Sadly, it's https. So a lot of older computers that still live and breathe off of sites like this (see: 68k.news) can't access it due to the bizarre (or Google pressured) security certificate ... for a sports scores site.
erickhill··on My New Old Macintosh SE/30 Computer
100% - I totally get it. Lists like these are always going to have What Ifs thrown in every direction. And the Q700 wasn't exactly popular by the mainstream (honestly, it was too expensive for that kind of awareness). And the list they created is fine even though the ordering could be batted around by plenty.

I was just opining about an anecdotal personal fave. :)

erickhill··on My New Old Macintosh SE/30 Computer
In that post he links to "the 6th most 'notable' Mac ever" over on Six Colors where they created a Top 20 of all-time list.

How that list failed to include the "Jurassic Park" computer, the gorgeous Quadra 700, truly made me sad. It's a machine where, if you need to take it apart, you can remove every single component - even the PSU and motherboard - with only ever needing to remove a single screw. (You can even remove the PSU's fan w/o needing any tools.) The rest is so beautifully designed that you can pop release all of it: floppy drive, hard drive PSU, speaker, motherboard, etc.

The 1 single screw holds the drive caddy to the case. That's it. And it's a design strategy that I'm willing to bet at least 50% of Quadra 700 owners back in the day didn't even realize was sitting on their desks.

By the way, the mini-desktop machine could be stood vertically or laid on its side - it was up to the user. Simply breathtakingly incredible design.

Sounds like the beginning of several zombie movies from the 80s. Only a few minutes after driving past, a canister would roll off the truck bed. Kids would later find it.

And so it goes.

erickhill··on DuckDuckGo Traffic
Interesting graph.

In my company's anecdotal experience DDG referrals have been historically flat. They went up a little bit around 1 year ago, then settled back down to their consistent (and relatively small) production. They rank 12th in our list of referrals, or 0.24% of total.

Bing is 2%.

Google is 47%.

(Good ol' Yahoo is 2x DDG)

erickhill··on Research finds immune system responds to mRNA treatment for cancer
Not trying to be cheeky: How many millions of citizens here in the U.S. will abstain from a potential cancer vaccine if based off this research? Would the same religious/tribal objections be held, for example, if the disease to be prevented was cancer vs a virus of unknown origin? Would it still be viewed by so many as a political/big-pharma conspiracy ("But where did the cancer come from?" etc.)?

Cynical me says it would.

There will be an NTSC version as well.
erickhill··on Sonic the Hedgehog for Commodore 64/128 + REU
Hey dzdt, will it matter which REU? In other words, would the 128K version be enough for this to be supported or would it need more RAM (e.g. 512kb, etc.)?
erickhill··on Some experts suggest Omicron variant may have evolved in an animal host
Re: #3, so if you go all the way back to the original strain: Potentially animal > human > animal > omicron in humans.

Like, a continuous mixing and mashing feedback loop.

If nothing else, the variants occurring in real time right before our very eyes should make the idea of evolution a lot easier for some in various communities to finally grasp.

erickhill··on Instagram Is Facebook Now
I'm not doubting the main thrust of the article. But it's a big pet peeve of mine when Tweets are used in the body of an article as supporting evidence and they have all of half a dozen likes/retweets. It's as if 3 or 4 people on Twitter mention something and that's collected as hard-cutting facts. /rant

erickhill··on John Carmack pushes out unlocked OS for defunct Oculus Go headset
This is precisely one of the key reasons I stick with Nintendo consoles for gaming. Sure, they sell plenty of connected games and online experiences, too, but I purchase all new games as physical "cartridges." This way in 20 years my son will be able to relive Breath of the Wild and a very large library of other Switch classics should he so desire.
erickhill··on The 100 MHz 6502
Wow - that is quite the unabashed Ultima clone right there!
erickhill··on The 100 MHz 6502
I discovered this a few years ago playing Ultima IV on my Amiga 3000, which is 16Mhz. It was impossible to play (and funny to look at) because the game was so sped up. All of the NPCs in the game, which normally just stand in place and move their arms about, were moving so fast it was bananas. You could barely see their arms they were like hummingbirds.

The game was intended to be on a 7Mhz stock machine pre-1990. And it was perfectly timed to that speed.

erickhill··on A Macintosh History 85.10
That's exactly how we made my high-school newspaper. Then about 1987, when I was a junior, the first day of Journalism class we walked into the room and discovered our world had changed forever. There were now two Macintosh computers (one with a gigantic 20MB hard drive).

We'd stepped into the future.

erickhill··on MEGA65 – highly advanced C64 and C65 compatible 8-bit computer
And there are lots of options that already fall into that bucket. If you want a beautifully designed, professional product with a mechanical keyboard, then nope. The case moulds alone cost a fortune (and years) to produce. This project has been going on for at least 6 years, and it's only a couple of months away from putting these computers in (some) people's homes.

But don't worry. The C65 core is already being ported to MiSTer from what I've heard. So a small metal box with a USB keyboard experience isn't far away for many others to enjoy.

erickhill··on Rogue antibodies involved in almost one-fifth of Covid deaths
I'm the only person I know that had an adverse reaction to my 2nd dose (Moderna). About 2 weeks after the shot I had 2 weeks of 1-2 degree daily fevers and fatigue with no other symptoms. My docs made me take 2 separate covid tests across that time - both were negative. During the end of the fevers I developed tinnitus in one ear.

I'm under the strong impression right now that the tinnitus will never go away. Thankfully mine is not a tone but a constant humming, like a dishwasher or refrigerator.

But yeah, something weird can occasionally occur with a very small % of the population either from the disease or the protection.

That being said one of my colleagues at work - fully vaxxed - was infected by an un-vaxxed family member at a family reunion. He passed it onto another fully vaxxed work colleague. Both were sick for about two weeks and one lost his taste of smell. That was months ago. He says it has returned but only by about 50%.

erickhill··on The Print Shop Club: Create Apple II Print Shop Printouts in the Browser
Thank you so much for doing this. So many of my classrooms were covered in printouts from this legendary program. It's amazing how ubiquitous its printouts were especially in my elementary school days.

That really gave me a massive blast from the past.

I really appreciate the attention to detail to even making the CRT-looking text have some color distortion.

A+

erickhill··on The rise of E Ink Tablets and Note Takers: reMarkable 2 vs Onyx Boox Note Air
Might I recommend an Apple Newton? ;)

Small(ish), syncable (bit of a learning curve to do so, but it is possible), and even comes with a physical keyboard if you want to really type things out rather than just use a stylus.

In my experience its OCR software is on-par with the Remarkable, if not better.

Good times.

erickhill··on MacFlim: Full-motion video on B&W Macs
The catch being the storage solutions employed here would have been impossible to imagine back then. But, perhaps just a 3-5 second video (like some of the gifs on the site) could have made the rounds. Even then they probably wouldn't have fit on a disk! Storage was so tough back then.
