erichurkman··on Numi – Calculator app for Mac
It's one of the view apps always running on my Mac.

I wish it supported multiple windows, though.

erichurkman··on Ask HN: Cheapest/easiest way to host a static site?
Let's be real here.

He clearly needs kubernetes.

erichurkman··on Show HN: PyWebIO – Write interactive web app in script way
You built it so you can refactor it when React `${v+1}` comes out, or when Webpack `${v+.1}` breaks your build.

I may or may not have dropped an /s somewhere on the floor.

erichurkman··on U.S. senators reintroduce bill to make daylight saving time permanent
This happened in 2005 when the federal government changed the start & end dates of DST. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Energy_Policy_Act_of_2005#Chan...
erichurkman··on Beyond Meat signs global supply deals with McDonald’s, KFC and Pizza Hut
The cattle ranches and potato farms don't have their names or logos on the burgers or fries. McDonalds can swap them out at any time.

Soda, on the other hand, is Coke's product and brand completely.

erichurkman··on 3500 packages uploaded to PyPI, pointing to a malicious URL
This looks like someone trying to replicate Alex Birsan's attack on Apple, Microsoft, and others but through package confusion instead of version squatting. Reasonable speculation:

1. Host thousands of typo packages that phone home every time they are installed. Store IPs.

2. Find which companies own those IPs, filter out residential

3. Report vulnerabilities

erichurkman··on Fish Shell 3.2
The performance fix for macOS [0] is very welcomed. I'll be glad to get rid of the ugly hacks in my fish config files. Looks like an amazing release all around.

erichurkman··on WebKit Quirks
> if (host == "trailers.apple.com")

> return true;

Even Apple themselves are not immune.

erichurkman··on Changes to LastPass Free
Same boat here. 1Password is now the slowest piece of software I use on a daily basis. 15-30 seconds to get a password out of 1Password mini, laggy and unresponsive keyboard navigation, TouchID prompts that stack under other modals or windows so they don't work, random beachballs, ... the list goes on.

At least sync still works flawlessly?

erichurkman··on Pattern matching accepted for Python
Mozilla for a time had a kitchen sink (https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=122411) at about:kitchensink.

It looked like this: https://www-archive.mozilla.org/docs/web-developer/samples/k...

erichurkman··on Pattern matching accepted for Python
And it allowed some non-intuitive parser limitations to be lifted, like full expressions in decorators (@buttons[0].click) and parentheses in context expressions (https://bugs.python.org/issue12782).
erichurkman··on 20% of requests for Wikimedia Commons are for one image of a flower
The effects and scale of sales (ads) are very combinatoric, though.
erichurkman··on Donut.c Without a Math Library
Another fun circular-math-in-code is from early IOCCC. It approximates pi by calculating the area and diameter of the circle in the code. https://www.cise.ufl.edu/~manuel/obfuscate/pi.c

erichurkman··on FTC Settlement with Fertility-Tracking App for Facebook/Google SDK Data Sharing
If you sell cribs, you likely only have 1 - 2 chances per couple's entire lives to sell a crib. Saturation and timing of ads are paramount.
erichurkman··on Reddit is buying TikTok rival Dubsmash
For a platform that drives revenue through continued engagement, clicks, views, and activity... could functioning search be considered an anti-feature?

If I can't find what I want, I'll start a new post, or reply to a comment… leading to people getting notifications, leading to clicks, more replies, …

erichurkman··on Reddit is buying TikTok rival Dubsmash
> However, teddit is limited to browsing. Can't reply / comment on it

Maybe a feature, not a limitation.

erichurkman··on Heavy is the Head that wears the AirPods Max
A big part of Apple's brand is that things generally work. I don't need to do a ton of research on the exact pros and cons of other products, I don't have to make sure that a particular brand's model wasn't silently replaced with a cheaper version with the same SKU, that service options do exist (though expensive), and that there's a robust secondary market of Apple devices.

erichurkman··on Show HN: Ugliest.app – Ugly but good app platform
This needs a 'Best viewed in Chrome 86 on iMac Pro' banner.
erichurkman··on SEO mistakes I've made and how I fixed them
Conjecture: Hugo and friends generate static file sites can touch on high signal for search engines: fast load times, meaningful cross-linking, responsive templates, minimal (if any) cross-domain loads, and new in 2020: minimal 'cumulative layout shift' and 'largest contentful paint'.

Not to say that you couldn't construct some monstrosity of a site with Hugo, but you're more likely to do that with a mess of half-maintained Wordpress plugins.

erichurkman··on iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro
When I traded my last phone in, I brought in the charger and was told to keep it -- that they throw power adapters away. No one wants to buy a refurb phone and have the cord suddenly fray a month later.
erichurkman··on Hacking Grindr Accounts with Copy and Paste
Back when I reported a Grindr security flaw (2016), I couldn't find them on any of the bounty sites, security@grindr.com bounced, and support failed to route it correctly.

Reaching out to their CTO, who I found on LinkedIn, and firstname.lastname@grindr.com got a reply in 8 minutes.

Sad to see they still haven't upped their security game.

erichurkman··on Ask HN: What is an acceptable latency for a web load balancer?
Check the endpoint with one of the SSL tools out there, like SSL Labs: https://www.ssllabs.com/ssltest/analyze.html?d=news.ycombina...

Some of the settings there link to tips for more investigation. Look at the session resumption settings in particular.

erichurkman··on Google Services Experiencing Disruptions
Side note: Google'e status page, linked, breaks the back button. How the 'F can a simple status dashboard break something so simple?

(In Google's own browser, too.)

erichurkman··on Ruth Bader Ginsburg has died
Trump's campaign has been blasting SCOTUS picks to their email list for weeks. From the latest one:

  > Did you hear the news? President Trump has released his shortlist for candidates for the Supreme Court. Here is a sneak preview of a few of the names on the list:
  > Senator Tom Cotton
  > Senator Josh Hawley
  > Senator Ted Cruz
  > And more…
erichurkman··on Ruth Bader Ginsburg has died
The cynic in me says they will leave the seat open through the election, with full intent of filling it in the lame duck sessions, to keep it as a drive for GOP votes. "Don't let the Democrats fill the seat!"

erichurkman··on A 35-year-old bug in Patch found in efforts to restore 29-year-old BSD
And for some projects, you might not have the disk space for a full 'clean' tree, so you copy just the 2 or 3 files you're editing into `file.old`. And when you're constructing the patch, you hand craft the order in which files are shown to make sure the code lines up to the narrative that accompanies the patch.

erichurkman··on Ask HN: What feature did you find after years of using macOS?
⌘-Shift-5 to disable that floating screen shot thing... I love you. That thing is _so slow_ and distracting I always worry my screen shot didn't actually save until that slow window popped up on some random screen.
