eric__cartman··on Not-so-great features coming soon to Windows 11
It's such a shame because Windows is a good operating system for a lot of desktop use cases that happens to be smeared with shit all over the user interface. Honestly I'm expecting them to introduce mini advertisements in the task bar any time soon. It's not like those pixels are being used for anything when there aren't many windows open right?
eric__cartman··on What happens to a smartphone when it gets stolen?
God I wish I lived in a country where that were the norm. And not have some crack head steal something to sell it for peanuts later.
eric__cartman··on New Chrome features to save battery and make browsing smoother
If you're developing a widely used web browser you have to take into account the people booting from a hard drive made in 2009.
eric__cartman··on Low nutritional quality in vegetarian meat substitutes
I can't wait for a future were we could (hopefully) artificially grow meat in a lab so the meat available that didn't come from a dead animal is closer to the real thing. In an affordable and sustainable fashion at least. Maybe I'm being too optimistic and hopeful on this one.
eric__cartman··on 'Pregnant' smuggler caught after 200 CPUs are found in her prosthetic belly
What a shame. Inserting a floppy disk or tape into a drive is way cooler than downloading the file from dropbox.
eric__cartman··on Windows 11 still not winning the OS popularity contest
They know most users don't have a choice and will upgrade when their current OS goes EOL or they buy a new computer. If it were for me I would have kept the Windows 7 shell and upgraded the operating system under the hood. Why change someone's workflow with a worse version of what you previously had. Like the awful search in Windows 10 that looks stuff up in Bing before searching the hard drive. Who thought that was a good idea? IT WORKED JUST FINE IN WINDOWS 7.
eric__cartman··on How to estimate an SSD’s working life
I have multiple consumer grade drives made in 2008-2010 that have been used a lot and have more than 7 years of recorded time of the head flying over the platters and they still work fine. Some with zero reallocated sectors and others with 1-10 in the last decade. But the number hasn't changed for 3+ years in any drive so it doesn't bother me.

Before you say it, of course I keep backups of everything. That's why I still use decade old hardware without much worry.

eric__cartman··on Windows 11 still not winning the OS popularity contest
Who would have thought that an operating system with crazy minimum system requirements and no meaningful improvements for the average user wouldn't be a popular choice.
eric__cartman··on The War on General Purpose Computing (2015) [video]
I would love to see that come true in the future but sadly nowadays the best way to have a fully free system is to use older hardware and stock up in spare parts to keep it running until an alternative pops up. Or one of those workstations with an IBM POWER CPU, but the price point is out of reach for most consumers.
eric__cartman··on Midori Browser Is Reborn
What would this give me that something like ungoogled chromium with uBlock Origin can't?
eric__cartman··on Huawei phones automatically deleting videos of the protests?
I don't agree with Richard Stallman's political or social views but he was right all along when it came to being wary of software not having the user's best interests in mind.
eric__cartman··on A bug fix in the 8086 microprocessor, revealed in the die's silicon
That's a good advertisement for 486s because they were baller enough to pull that off.
eric__cartman··on Iranian man who lived in Paris’ Charles de Gaulle airport for 18 years dies
I agree. It's not like 95% of the work to make a movie like that comes from thinking about a good story to base it on. Once you have a story like that, most of the effort is yet to come until you can see a fully produced movie on cinema screens. And 250k should be a life changing amount of money to someone in that situation if they really wanted to get out of it.
eric__cartman··on Roald Dahl's writing shed (1982) [video]
Are Roald Dahl's adult novels as good as his children's books? I absolutely loved to read his stories as a child and probably would enjoy a similar experience as an adult. Heck I should probably pick Fantastic Mister Fox or Danny the Champion of the World and read them again.
eric__cartman··on Is NetSurf Dead?
NetSurf doesn't support any of the new web standards so I would consider the current version pretty much feature complete for what it supports. I don't think the devs ever intended to continue development and turn it into a feature complete browser suitable for daily use nowadays.
eric__cartman··on Nvidia’s hot adapter for the GeForce RTX 4090 with a built-in breaking point
How often do consumers plug power connectors into a GPU for that to be a problem? Spending a few minutes routing multiple power cables for an expansion card that once installed sits in place for years doesn't seem like a big deal to me.
eric__cartman··on “Old/weird laptops” sought to help test Linux kernel backlight drivers
I knew that piece of crap I've been storing in a closet for the past 7 years would come useful someday.
eric__cartman··on Arduino IDE 2.0
You can't emulate a real FPGA with a microcontroller
eric__cartman··on Ask HN: Is Inflation Affecting You?
I live in Argentina so it's been affecting me for my whole life as far as I know :(
eric__cartman··on Namecheap CEO offers $10k bounty for changing someone else's domain via helpdesk
kek I thought this was a troll account until I saw your post history. I like your straight forward approach to username creation.
eric__cartman··on New Intel chips won't play Blu-ray disks due to SGX deprecation
I'd rather send the bone headed executive that decided that drm should be a thing on a movie I bought a copy of.
eric__cartman··on Ruffle: WebAssembly Flash Player Emulator
My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic was done in Flash. And that show went on for nine seasons.

Also afaik the first season of Bob's Burgers was done in Flash.

eric__cartman··on Search Hacker News
I misread this as Spanish Hacker News and got really confused and curious. I should probably goto sleep now.
eric__cartman··on TikTok updated privacy policy to collect faceprints and voiceprints (2021)
It should be unacceptable regardless of country of origin.
eric__cartman··on A 2-yr-old showed signs of puberty after exposure to his dad's testosterone gel
the mere thought of that makes my skin crawl
eric__cartman··on End-of-life smartphone? Penguins at PostmarketOS aim to revive it
I have a OnePlus 5 (a device from 2017) that's suffering the same fate. The hardware itself is fine. It has 6 gigabytes of RAM and a SoC that's fast enough that I don't notice any slowdowns in day to day usage. Yet the officially supported software by the manufacturer has been abandoned two years ago. I'm currently running LineageOS, and the phone is working as good as ever. Running a modern version of Android with monthly security patches.

It's a shame that expensive devices nowadays are made to be disposable. After getting a battery replacement, this phone is ready to go for a few more years at least. SoCs have gotten so good that even a half a decade old chip will perform well for the vast majority of users that don't play big games on their phones. It's not like you need a supercomputer to browse social media, websites and use maps for navigation.

eric__cartman··on 1974 Sinclair Scientific Calculator Repair and Restoration
I find it endearing how instead of having constants such as pi and Euler's number built into memory and accessible from some key combination, the calculator just prints it on the case for you to manually type in. This is a fantastic example of early developments in affordable computing devices.

Also, RPN ftw!

eric__cartman··on Show HN: Radiopaper – Troll-resistant public conversations
Reminds me of the "safe space" from South Park.
eric__cartman··on Turning back the clock: Human skin cells de-aged by 30 years in trial
I don't think it'll be brain related. After all there's no use in have a healthy body at an old age if the patient is suffering from degenerative illnesses that affect the brain.
