eric234223··on I’m Bill Gates. AMA about Covid-19
Much more likely scenario is every vehicle runs on closed source software controlled by state government which can halt the movement of the citizen at will based on social credit or any some thing like that.
eric234223··on Mathematica v12.1
If a software is used to create data that is okay like editing text files in microsoft windows. But computational software such as Wolfram being closed source bothers me a lot. There is no way to verify the science you do is correct.
eric234223··on NPM Is Joining GitHub
No. Microsoft did not adopt to Github. The first thing microsoft did after acquiring github is forced to login to view commits. I felt like some huge corporation took over the park i daily visit and charged me. It felt terrible.
eric234223··on Microsoft Teams goes down just as Europe logs on to work remotely
Let the people managers keep complaining how remote work is not going to work .In the meanwhile i share my amazing tip.

If you are on ubuntu and want to remote desktop to windows machine try this opensource amazing freerdp tool

$ sudo apt install freerdp2-x11 $ xfreerdp '/u:domain\username' /p:PasswordSuperSecret /v:hostname.com /w:1920 /h:1080 -grab-keyboard /monitors:0 -themes -wallpaper +fonts +clipboard -decorations

eric234223··on Microsoft Teams goes down just as Europe logs on to work remotely
My manager(people manager) has the same opinion. But in reality he is afraid that people might question what's does he do anyway if every one works from home. Companies are going to find out people managers job are really not as important.
eric234223··on Hard work and specialising early is not always a recipe for success
The example problem is unclear. Could you please describe more on it. Which DSP algorithm falls under the Halting Problem and is there any database or general programming related problem that falls under "Halting Problem" ?
eric234223··on A Guide to Managing Remote Teams
Asking for email address is asking for a huge favor. Its not free. Just because a product took hard work to create does not get the right to call it free when asking for email address. Let that sink in.
eric234223··on Elon Musk says college is 'basically for fun and not for learning'
In India it is to fulfill the ego of professors nothing more. Unlike America professors are paid lower than the industry and those who can't get jobs in Industry become professors and treat students like slaves. I did not understood while in college but now i get it, it is a coping mechanism for incompetence. One good thing about Corono is that it forces online education like the recent MIT online classes, hope this will set a chain reaction and take the monopoly on education from traditional colleges.
eric234223··on Tips for the depressed
I have observed when i am alone for 3 or more days without talking to anyone i get depressed. Even if i have conversation with anonymous people on the internet over text chat, depression gets reduced a lot. Are there any scientific research on human contact over text and depression ?
eric234223··on Not being an asshole will make you more money
You can't change an asshole but you need to be more asshole to an asshole in order to inspire respect among peers and people around you. In my career before i get promoted i was already a go to guy among my peers because people knew i don't expect sympathy from an asshole and push their ideas if i see merit in it.
eric234223··on Ask HN: How to Take Good Notes?
What is CFI ?
eric234223··on The unspoken truth about managing geeks (2009)
The relation b/w Respect and competence is correct. I had started on wrong foot with competent people and when they tried to demonstrate their competence, I show off my skills as a competition, but surprisingly it turns out in to mutual self respect and we get along well. I have been on both sides as showing the competence and being challenged and it always amazes me how it always turns in to mutual respect.
eric234223··on Daily Life with the Offline Laptop
There is an awesome pdf manager and web page capture softwar https://getpolarized.io/ . It supports offline mode, but as of now there is a bug that needs to be worked around by logging out. It supports taking anki notes and syncing too.
eric234223··on How to Collaborate with People You Don’t Like (2018)
Thats torture. It does not have to be once we have UBI.
eric234223··on Ask HN: Do You Miss IRC?
This is what exactly i am looking for. To chat with passionate people who can not be approached easily. The entry bar is a bit high(setting up IRC to run it 24/7). Can you post the irc channels you are in.
eric234223··on Why do incompetent managers get promoted?
> Incompetent managers get promoted because the things they are competent at are not the things their employees want them to be competent at.

Employers don't have other option. What happens is the people who love coding don't want to be managers and the people who want don't want to code or suck at coding take up manager positions. The problem arises when these managers have to promote. They choose the lesser capable guy who is not a threat to their job. This is what i have seen in software industry.

eric234223··on Ask HN: Advice for a new and inexperienced tech lead?
TLDR: Be very skilled or be likable.

Be very good than most team members in your tech skills and demonstrate it when chance presents, that will make them respect your judgement. If your tech skills are not on par with some of the team members that's fine, but you need to handle them differently. Time and time again i have seen skilled members of the team will question authority if they don't get along with team leads. Remember the cost of replacing a manager or techlead is low compared to skilled people because they get paid lower usually. You may have to delegate work but you must be the most skilled guy in the team or you should have a very likable personality.

eric234223··on Hard negotiations: why a softer approach yields better outcomes
This may be good for long term business deals but not optimal for software engineers salary negotiations. Considering the pace of job change, its optimal to take the hard negotiations.
eric234223··on Show HN: A game I wrote in a day
Why do you need a gametick(setInterval) when all the update happens on key event ?
eric234223··on Donald Knuth: Algorithms, Complexity, Life, and the Art of Programming [video]
What do you dislike about his interview ? He asks good questions and listens. What more do you expect ?
eric234223··on No nuances, just buggy code (was: related to Spinlock implementation)
Is this your interpretation or you know it for sure. Sorry for being skeptical. I am having hard time believing Linus Torvalds would have an account on realworldtech.com. I have never heard of this site before. The only place i have seen Linus reply is in the kernel mailing lists. Also is this email id torvalds.delete@this.linux-foundation.org ? How do we even know the reply is from linus.
eric234223··on No nuances, just buggy code (was: related to Spinlock implementation)
Where is the link to the origin of this discussion ? From the realworldtech.com looks this is the first post https://www.realworldtech.com/forum/?threadid=189711&curpost... . But that post is already an reply to something else's post.
eric234223··on Ram Dass has died
Bhagavad Gita also advocates for varna system which is one of the shames of hinduism.
eric234223··on McMindfulness: How mindfulness became the new capitalist spirituality
For western people(and also most of indians) who want to judge for themselves based only on verifiable facts should read http://www.ambedkar.org/ambcd/02.Annihilation%20of%20Caste.h... to get the incentive model of hinduism and the varna system which is advocated by Vedism. Varna system is basically providing right to people based on birth. At the top of the hierarchy is the Brahmins(priests) . Most of the first generation hindus who you might encounter in America will be most likely to be Brahmins. This was because only Brahmins are allowed to get education according to varna system which was followed until Britishers came to india and setup schools for everyone. My great great grand fathers owned 600 acres of land but did not had any education. They were okay with it because the people at the bottom of the hierarchy are not allowed to own lands. The varna sytem is setup in such a way that by honoring it one gets more rights that the lower hierarchy but lesser than the higher hierarchy. At the top there was Brahmin(priests) who enjoyed all the rights and who had lot to lose with the fall of varna sytem. So that is the reason you can see all the Brahmins support Hinduism even if they dont believe in god.
eric234223··on Draw.io: Online Diagramming Website
"Whimsical" You can't even try without providing your email. Any app/website asking me to do the hard work of providing my email when i have to do the favor of trying it out, my response has been no thanks, i am not gonna try.
eric234223··on What You Can't Say (2004)
The Norm is changed by the trouble makers and impulsive people who don't think about the long term consequences. Being selfish I don't want to be one of them but i am very glad they exist.
