eric-hu··on Tour de France: How professional cycling teams eat and cook on the road
My understanding of steroids is that they increase muscle mass all over the body. And that it's a long term health issue for the heart, because having a heart with excess muscle is actually bad long term. A few lifting YouTubers I follow have made videos on the subject. It seems like there's "less unsafe" steroid use, but there will be a life expectancy sacrifice with any level of use.

I don't know what the story is like for EPO and other red-cell increasing drugs. Would be curious to hear yours and a few others' understanding of the cost/benefit.

Having lived in Bangkok, I can say there weren’t great alternatives to Grab. Traditional taxis were as bad if not worse in my experience.
eric-hu··on Chinese yuan becomes Russia's main foreign currency, replacing dollar and euro
Is that materially different? That’s just a Chinese phonetic representation of Vladivostok.

> I want to lock, restart and shut down my computer with my keyboard. There are some shortcuts but honestly I can never remember the key combinations.

If you don’t already know this combo, cmd-? (AKA cmd-shift-/) will drop down the “help” menu in most applications that run in macOS. From there, I use the arrow keys to move to other menus. It’s just one nearly universal hotkey and it works for almost all menu items.

eric-hu··on I sold TinyPilot, my first successful business
Congratulations on your sale Michael. I've been following your blog over the years and have learned a lot. Really happy for you that you could find a buyer and wrap things up with TinyPilot. Looking forward to seeing what you work on in the future!
eric-hu··on US Justice Department to seek breakup of Live Nation-Ticketmaster
> Sources familiar with the matter said that while the two companies had been in constant touch with antitrust agencies in the UK, EU, and United States to work out a path to close the deal, the UK regulators have in recent weeks indicated that it would require remedies for Adobe to divest Figma design, a core asset of the acquisition.

https://www.reuters.com/technology/adobe-figma-terminate-20-...

> On December 18, 2023, Figma and Adobe both announced they were mutually agreeing to abandon their merger,[17][18] with Adobe citing that there was "no clear path to receive necessary regulatory approvals from the European Commission and the UK Competition and Markets Authority."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Figma#Attempted_acquisition_by...

Only if you count UK/EU regulators.

eric-hu··on China blocks use of Intel and AMD chips in government computers: Report
Pardon my ignorance, but does “actual root” imply some kind of connection between a Linux root user and the motherboard chipset?
eric-hu··on Inflation in December was even lower than first reported, the government says
Just a nit, but disinflation is when inflation slows, but is still higher than before. Deflation is when prices go down.
eric-hu··on Amazon and iRobot call off their planned acquisition
For the employees at Figma, their shot at cashing out evaporated when the Adobe deal was called off. I know people who were ready to leave Github in the past, but their manager told them to wait a bit, there’s a big acquisition coming and their equity would be worth sizeably more.

So here’s one of those scenarios: you’re working at Figma. Perhaps you’re burned out or just want to try out something different. This acquisition deal with Adobe has been signed and you’re grinding through the days waiting for your chance to cash in on the years of work with Figma that have nearly paid off. Then this happens.

This affects startups similarly. The non IPO exit path got that much less attractive.

One datapoint supporting “not economically”:

There was a plant in Missouri to convert turkey offal into crude oil using leftovers from a Butterball plant. It’s been shuttered and the parent company filed for chapter 11.

eric-hu··on There has never been a better time to game on Linux
Do you run this? I’m curious what your experience (and others) are with it.

I have a Pop!OS box and it was a little work to set up. I was mostly pleased with the result, though. Steam experimental Proton had a wide range of my games library compared to regular Proton. I did run into major bugs running some of those games, but it was good for scratching a nostalgia itch.

Sounds like a gaming and privacy focused modification of windows based on my read of the FAQ

I’ve vaguely heard the term before, but I don’t know what regions of the world actually use that term.

eric-hu··on How Often Should We Sharpen Our Tools?
I’ve done a fair amount of car work. The analogy makes sense for me when I think about workspace habits. There was a time where I’d grab a wrench and then leave it wherever when I was done turning that one bolt. It might have been on the ground next to my right hand, on my belly, or on the bumper.

That changed after I spent far too many frustrating moments looking for a 12 mm wrench and losing my train of thought to backtrack my steps.

I hit a stride when I learned to organize my tools and keep them organized between tasks. It’s still obvious to me now because I have friends who don’t work this way, and I feel overwhelmed when I go into their garage or kitchen and all work surfaces are covered in tools, knives, unopened boxes, etc. I need to actively expand mental energy to ignore those things.

As a human, I’m not even sure what the correct answer should be.

The pedantically correct response is to point out that you’re asking which of two identical things is different. As some commenters here point out, error correcting assumptions are a feature of intelligence. Geeks are sometimes mocked for taking words too literally.

eric-hu··on After OpenAI's blowup, it seems pretty clear that 'AI safety' isn't a real thing
Doesn't the second kind apply to AI in military drones? Companies like OpenAI talking about AI safety is a nice way of numbing us to AI used in actual killing machines.

eric-hu··on Reflecting on 18 Years at Google
As a web developer I also have to tell you that my industry has gotten more cavalier about using resources. Unless your benchmark is browsing sites that you know have not changed in 15 years, the heaviness you feel could be from development teams using shiny new frameworks.

eric-hu··on Before OpenAI, Sam Altman was fired from Y Combinator by his mentor
Vladimir Putin had 77% of the vote in Russia’s 2017. If Putin can’t fake a 95% approval rating, surely the OpenAI numbers must be real.

eric-hu··on Sam Bankman-Fried Convicted
Sentencing happens some time later.

My guess is that he’ll get something closer to Bernie Madoff’s sentence than Elizabeth Holmes. She at least was pregnant at the time of sentencing and her defense was seemingly successful in painting her business partner as the puppeteer.

eric-hu··on Why Japan has blue traffic lights instead of green
Oh that’s interesting. Yeah 青 is used in Chinese as another word for green. I don’t know that it has any connotations of blue, but I did grow up in the US, so perhaps there’s nuance to that character I’m unaware of, or the character slightly changed meaning when made a kanji.
eric-hu··on Why Japan has blue traffic lights instead of green
Do you know more about the history of this color use? It’s surprising to me that midori uses the kanji for green in Chinese if it’s such a recent idea in Japan.
eric-hu··on Microsoft completes $69B deal to buy Activision Blizzard
As a StarCraft 2 fan, I’m actually quite happy with the current game balance. The last two rounds of balance patches from the community were far better for the playability and fun of the game. It was alarming when Blizzard cut funding for GSL and it looked like the Korean scene was practically done, but Afreeca and the community pulled together and kept that prize pool interesting enough for the Korean pros.
eric-hu··on Ask HN: Why did Python win?
Homebrew, the macOS dependency manager, and Cocoapods, the Swift and objective C package manager, are both written in Ruby.
eric-hu··on How to drill your own water well
Yeah that seems reasonable enough to me. I’ve seen parks and green spaces in Southern California that have warning signs about not drinking irrigation water.

My earlier comment was motivated by a concern that tapping a non-potable water source for one’s own family might bear health risks without more analysis of the state of that water. For all you know, even if you only use that water for plants, maybe you’re growing food with water high in arsenic and it’s accumulating in the food.
