eric-hu··on In SSRI withdrawal, brain zaps go from overlooked symptom to center stage (2023)
> Right, but splitting isn't sufficient for many people. The person I know was on 50mg. They tried to carefully shave off 1/8th initially, then 1/4 etc. It was error prone cutting them exactly and even a 1/8th change in dose at a time with a two week adjustment period caused them to have terrible effects.

This was the case for me! It took me months to titrate down to 0 from Sertraline. Withdrawal side effects were terrible, and I’m pretty turned off to SSRIs in general now. My past doctors talked them up as “safe”, and treated the ramp down process as a tiny inconsequential mention.

I had tried to stop after stabilizing on a half dose, 1/4 dose, etc., and the side effects were too unpleasant so I had to start back up. I could only stop after I titrated down to 1/8th, every other day.

Interesting term. On a geopolitical scale, how is the US/NATO’s position any different? There are export controls around advanced semiconductors and encryption algorithms.

Is it okay to do this between countries but not within societies? (Genuine question. I really don’t know where I stand on this, for either side.)

eric-hu··on Dockworkers at ports from Maine to Texas go on strike
You might be looking at the 100 hours thinking that’s grueling work. Meanwhile workers could be looking at that thinking it’s their AWS auto scaling for their family income.

I have a friend doing electrical line work. He’s gone back and forth between IC work and management. ICs trend to get paid better, because of strong overtime compensation rules and there’s a queue of overtime work. Those overtime weeks sound rough though. 12+ hour work days working with heavy machinery and 10 Kv power lines.

eric-hu··on Timeshare owner? The Mexican drug cartels want you
When you say "to supposedly help", do you mean they actually help, or this industry is also scammers?

Asking because someone in my extended family owns a timeshare and got scammed with an exit offer. It sounded similar to the timeshare pitch itself.

eric-hu··on Amazon tells employees to return to office five days a week
I’m currently job searching and I tend to just see (remote) or (hybrid). It usually requires me digging into the description to see if a company has an office I can go to.

Some that are hybrid optional list themselves as (remote), but do so fully remote companies.

I was hoping to find data on Pieter's current projects using Sqlite and their loads. (For all I know, RemoteOK still does, but I can't find more recent posts about it).

eric-hu··on Why GitHub won
I only learned the term grayware from this thread. I wasn't sure precisely what did and didn't qualify as malware, so I checked Wikipedia and found it there.

As for the Windows fear, I understand that. That was me 10+ years ago, and I _am_ less knowledgable at helping people with Windows these days. I can still figure some things out by searching, and "I couldn't figure it out after 5-10 minutes" has turned out to be an acceptable answer too sometimes :)

eric-hu··on Why GitHub won
You got a chuckle out of me with such a specific reference that I know I got auto-installed too. I don't know, personally, but I do recall reading accounts of malware from them from around that era.

I suppose I would call what I saw "Grayware" [1], which is debatably not malware (but debatably is, too). It was enough of a smell for me to stop using their site, though. I'd actually just forego software I was seeking out from them instead.

eric-hu··on Speeding up Electron apps by using V8 snapshots in the main process
Indeed I was. I mentioned vim because I’m used to that level of performance and VS Code is on par. I have experienced sluggishness with Slack, so I meant Slack likely has performance issues due its application code rather than its Electron dependency.

After using VS Code for a while coming from vim, I’m inclined to say it’s bad application programming.
eric-hu··on Intel Honesty
Why focus on revenue instead of income? Regardless of what Intel’s revenue is, they’re losing money. AMD is earning.
eric-hu··on Intel Honesty
That sounds like a policy I can get behind. Can you share a name of such a policy or a link to one?
eric-hu··on Intel Honesty
> Another way to look at it: Intel market cap is 83B, AMD's market cap is 228B. Do you think Intel is expected to make 1/3 of the money AMD is going to make in coming decades? I see no reason to be as optimistic.

Nit: market cap is not earnings. That's stock price * shares outstanding.

This year's earnings looks like this:

Intel, 3 months ended: Jun 29, 2024

> Net income (loss) (1,654)

https://www.intc.com/news-events/press-releases/detail/1704/...

AMD, 3 months ended: June 29, 2024

> Net income (loss) $ 265

https://ir.amd.com/news-events/press-releases/detail/1209/am...

So Intel lost 1654M and AMD earned 265M. This only makes your point stronger.

> Desirable urban areas of California are expensive because we don't have enough housing.

I hear this a lot about California and other places. But I also know lots of people look to buy a 2nd, 3rd, etc property for rental income. For those homeowners, buying more property is rational because it's an investment they already understand. They can reap economy of scale benefits, even at a low multiple like 2-3 properties: water heaters, dishwashers etc become easier to maintain. The incentives are strong for homeowners to buy rental property. And they're in a stronger position to buy than renters.

My gut tells me that 7-8 of every 10 new houses built are bought with the intention to rent it out. It seems like "build more homes" will result in current property owners owning more property to rent out, and most renters will still be renters.

eric-hu··on Making your own hot sauce
That sounds amazing, thank you for sharing.

I wonder if your experience with maple syrup is different from the author’s because of differences in pork belly size. My recent food experiences lead me to believe that sugar doesn’t penetrate solid foods deeply even when left over days or weeks. If that’s true, your unwashed bacon and the author’s could vary from the author’s by surface area. Or it could be a subjective matter of taste.
