erhaetherth··on Histotripsy – a technique that harnesses soundwaves to attack cancer
Can you get the procedure without FDA approval?
erhaetherth··on PostgresJs: PostgreSQL client for Node.js and Deno
Oh, that happens to me quite a bit (I'm a top 500 SO user). I find some great question or answer and then try to upvote it and then get confused why it won't let me.
erhaetherth··on Radar Maps Platform
You had me until this pricing page: https://radar.com/pricing?type=consumer

I'm interested in the address autocompletion in particular, but you guys don't want to tell me how much it's actually going to cost apparently.

I also have no idea what a "monthly tracked user" is or how it's relevant.

LMK when you drop the "Contact Sales" aspect.

erhaetherth··on Costco now offering virtual medical care for $29
That much? Makes the $2600/yr that I pay sound good. I have a high deductible though ($3K). I don't know if putting $23K aside each year and not having any insurance would work for everyone... I think we should just give that money to the gov't and they should cover pretty much everything. With a pool that big I think the economics would work.
erhaetherth··on Circles do not exist
Using PDF as a standard (for anything) is insane. I mean it was nice before Adobe backpedaled and tried to milk it for everything and now the format is anything but portable.
erhaetherth··on Writing HTML by hand
Is there an HTML formatter that'll strip unnecessary closing tags?

I used to be team semi-colon in JS but I've switched teams now and have my formatter strip them. There's like 1 or 2 edge cases where that can bite you but practically speaking it's a non-issue. The real downside is that I sometimes get lazy when writing C++ and that very much dislikes poor punctuation.

erhaetherth··on Writing HTML by hand
pretty sure you're not supposed to use px in the height attribute. they are pixels.

the width will be set to match the aspect ratio but your browser will have to DL the image first. which probably doesn't matter unless you have content to the left/right of it, then it'll get bumped when the image loads. layout shift is a nasty thing.

erhaetherth··on XML is better than YAML – Hear me out
Ehh, I don't know. Sometimes I want to put code in my config, but there's value in not. It's more portable and easier to parse with various tools and different languages if you stick to some format.
erhaetherth··on Linear code is more readable
> You can then keep the box function as is.

The box function is broken too. You box the pizza and then return the pizza...but the box is logically a wrapper for the pizza. `box(pizza)` should return a boxed pizza. A box with contents=[pizza]. Maybe some sauce and pepperoncini in there too.

Plus all these functions are impure. Which isn't always bad but if you can prevent things like boxing it before baking it, you should.

And what even... this entire example is just horrendous. You box the pizza and then slice the pizza? Ready = box.Close()? Can the Close() operation fail? And then the pizza is not ready? Why not throw an error, now the caller has to check if the pizza that got returned to them is even ready...? And that fact is even more hidden on the right side. Same for Sliced and Boxed.

erhaetherth··on Linear code is more readable
There's an easier approach that will also aid you in telling you how to precisely chop up your function.

Simply don't chop up your function until you need a slice of it somewhere else. Then refactor out the bit you need. You'll find out exactly which bits need to be replaced with variables and exactly where the slice needs to happen.

erhaetherth··on Some notes on local-first development
I think most of us knew this was a mistake instantly. Internet was even shoddier 10 years ago.

erhaetherth··on I don’t want to grow my freelance design studio into an agency
You don't have to rise the ranks. I'm still debating if I should go for a 'senior' role. I've been programming for over 20 years. I was a "senior" in my last job but now I'm just a regular SWE. I get paid well enough and I get enough respect. Do I need more stress/responsibility? Probably not. Mostly I just don't want more pointless meetings.
erhaetherth··on Wavacity – a FOSS port of Audacity to the web
Well, I find Gimp unusable because I learned PS hotkeys 15 years ago and whenever I press them in Gimp it does random things. Photopea is nearly a 1:1 mapping of PS. Can't comment too much on feature parity, I don't do anything too crazy. Some cropping, expanding canvas size, maybe desaturate or adjust levels, use layers and masking. Magic selection. Maybe some content-aware fill. No artist/painting/fancy brushstroke stuff though.

Yeah... I kept it on Yarn 3/berry but set the node-linker back to node_modules and moved on with my life.
erhaetherth··on RFC 3339 vs. ISO 8601
The changing of zones isn't a problem, that's why we're using lat/lon, but if the nearby countries can't agree on what time it is...that's an issue.

Where can I get this data? Does the US provide CSVs or JSON or something?

erhaetherth··on Open-Source Washing
What counts as 'distribution'? If the public can connect to my server, do I have to share my server code?
erhaetherth··on Open-Source Washing
Isn't that similar to Llama's 700 million users clause?
erhaetherth··on Dev / Stage / Prod is the wrong pattern for data pipelines
Sounds like a complicated way of saying every developer should have their own DB instead of a shared dev instance.
erhaetherth··on I only lost 10 minutes of data, thanks to ZFS
Stop, you're scarring me! I have mirrored drives in a zpool. If a pair dies I lose 18 TB. My most important stuff is cloud-replicated but still...
erhaetherth··on Beyond SQL: A relational database for modern applications
MySQL has a "use index" hint. https://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/8.0/en/index-hints.html

I may have used it at most once. But I'm not mr big data over here.

erhaetherth··on Life Has Several Exits
> And statistically, the chance that you would be someone who is remembered 100 years from now is kind of slim

FWIW I've been building a family tree recently and I've made it back to 1890. Don't know a lot about those folks but I do have pics. And they're the only tie I have to some family in Germany who I met just recently.

Bit of a tangent though. I don't think I'll optimize for rememberability.

erhaetherth··on Zoom is making its staff return to the office
I worked for a small software company in Canada. We were hourly. Had a specific start time and end time and they shoed you out the door at 5pm to lock up. If you ever had to stay late, you filled out an overtime sheet. No clock in/out but if you were late frequently you'd get a talking to.

It was annoying. I'd often be 'in the zone' at 5 and they felt the need to interrupt productive work. Not sure why. Eventually they gave me a key.

erhaetherth··on The $1M shot that changed sports contests

erhaetherth··on What I would do if I ran Tarsnap (2014)
Several people have written that software. Duplicati, Borg, Arq for example.

> But then I’d have to monitor it, troubleshoot outages, maintain things, etc, etc.

None of these solutions free you from having to monitor your backups, including Tarsnap. Tarnsap requires setup on your server. You have to make sure it's running and backing up the correct files. And you really should verify you can restore a backup.

I'm really not sure what Tarsnap adds over these aside from saving you from having to sign up for B2 to S3 and punching in an API key.

erhaetherth··on What I would do if I ran Tarsnap (2014)
That's a funny definition of "reliable". I'd factor availability into reliability. If I Uber to work and every time an Uber picks me up it gets me to my destination with 100% success but once a week no Ubers are available, is that a reliable mode of transportation? Would my boss not shout at me to find a more reliable way to get to work?
erhaetherth··on The Resilience of Costco (2018)
According to that site, Costco has 741 stores. And 3 of them are within 10 minutes of me. Noice.
erhaetherth··on Goodbye, Twilio
FWIW I never thought Twilio was good as a developer. At least not coming hot off of Stripe. Which is glorious. The dev mode is fantabulous, and so are the docs. Twilio... I.. it's just atrocious in so many ways. Firstly, it needs a proper dev API key and then all the SMS's should just be collected into a dashboard on their site instead of going to phones. And their Connect option is very half baked. Customers should be able to re-use their existing Twilio numbers, not re-buy under a connected app, and they should be able to manage their numbers on twilio.com, not force me to rebuild the entire Twilio UI.

I don't mind paying for the research, engineering and maybe design but I won't pay for "brand". Same as I don't buy luxury bags or iPhones or clothes.
