erhaetherth··on Why I always hit the crosswalk button (2015)
"Scramble" is a funny term for that. I guess it kind of looks like the pedestrians are "scrambling" to an outsider but hopefully most of them know where they're going and aren't scrambling.

I think that author likes to make up words, like "Stroad".

erhaetherth··on Why I always hit the crosswalk button (2015)
I don't mind if cars drive through on the walk phase as long as they slow to a crawl and make sure no one is walking first. Sometimes the road is very much clear because the person has already crossed, there's no need to hold up the cars.

And I say this as a pedestrian, I walk to work. And I am afraid of getting hit every day but for a different reason. The crosswalks are in the stupidest friggin spots, around a bend in the road, and cars are apparently allowed to park right up against the crosswalk so if even want a hope in hell of being seen you have to walk part way onto the road, and peak your head around the van that's blocking the view for both you and oncoming cars, and then hope they can see you around the bend in the road.

The Country select box should allow you to type characters when it's focused. The native <select> will do this out of the box.
erhaetherth··on light-dark()
It sets the foreground/text color because it's used with the `color` property (https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/CSS/color). You can use it to set the background color too in which case you'd do `background-color: light-dark(white, black);`

The good news with smart bulbs is that they're easy to unsmart. Just unscrew them and put your dumb bulb back in.

I replaced almost all my bulbs with smart bulbs, and then got annoyed having to ask Google to turn on the lights all the time. My solution? Even more technology of course. I found these little buttons that fit neatly over my existing switches so it not only keeps the switch in the correct position but makes it just as easy to turn off/on as before. But now they're dimmable and remotely controllable which is a plus in my books. Also my apartment is dumb and barely has a single built-in light so it's just lamps everywhere; without smart bulbs I'd probably have to flick a million switches or lamp-ropes.

erhaetherth··on My $500M Mars rover mistake
> no issues raised in PRs by senior engineers

Wat? Like serious issues, or minor things that can be improved? Because it's very rare in my place of work that there are no comments on a 'PR'. Something can always be improved.

erhaetherth··on My $500M Mars rover mistake
You'll be extra careful but I don't know about extra safe. I had a few close calls while driving and it made me a less confident driver which I don't think did anyone any favors.
erhaetherth··on Sqids – Generate short unique IDs from numbers
Might not be, but I like to start with a big number instead of 0 or 1 to fill all the bits. For example, if your prime is 100019, then your first number in binary is 00011000011010110011 but if your max number is something like 2^53 (00100000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000) then you have a lot of unfilled bits. The way I have mine set up, the output ID is always exactly 9 chars. 99% of the time it's naturally 9 chars because just by probability most of the numbers will be large, but some of them come out 8 chars and then I just pad up to 9 so it's nice and consistent.
erhaetherth··on datetime.utcnow() is now deprecated
> Sure, it all seems to work for now... and then a customer signs up from Tuvalu, and performs a billable action at 11:59PM on the last day of the month, and your whole billing system falls over because they now have a split invoice generated for next month while it's still this month.

Then you issue a refund and fix the problem, not lock everyone out of the system.

erhaetherth··on Why I tend not to use content negotiation
1st party APIs that are exposed to the client need to be secure anyway or users will discover and start using it.

I found a library on GitHub that does exactly this to our app. They reverse-engineered nearly everything. I'm sure we could break the lib if we encrypt a few tokens but no one seems to care. I don't mind either, since we clearly aren't giving users a proper API.

erhaetherth··on LLMs cannot find reasoning errors, but can correct them
Which I take full advantage of when the output is like 90% correct but the "fix" requires a bit of refactoring, I just tell it what I want and presto. Faster than doing it by hand.
erhaetherth··on LLMs cannot find reasoning errors, but can correct them
I don't like this. It forces me to read 2 prompts instead of 1 so that I can help train their LLM. ChatGPT and Bard already have regenerate buttons if I don't like their response, it doesn't need to be that in my face.
erhaetherth··on OpenAI's board has fired Sam Altman
I'll sell my soul for about $600K/yr. Can't say I'm at the top of the AI game but I did graduate with a "concentration in AI" if that counts for anything.
erhaetherth··on OpenAI's board has fired Sam Altman
Did we ever think LLMs were a path to AGI...? AGI is friggin hard, I don't know why folks keep getting fooled whenever a bot writes a coherent sentence.
erhaetherth··on Privacy is priceless, but Signal is expensive
Sure. But honestly, what are you hoping for, and does any app provide it? Honest question.

I'd prefer a JSON dump but something's better than nothing.

Oh I know I couldn't prevent it. But if you wanted to scrape me, you'd have to pay the monthly subscription because everything is behind a pay wall/login. And then you'd only have access to data you entered because it's just that kind of app :-)

erhaetherth··on Google lays off employees working on its voice assistant
run "set timer" and "what's the weather" and "turn on the lights" through some regexes as a first pass and save the LLM for the complicated stuff. actually, with some caching they can probably cut costs pretty heavily there too.

erhaetherth··on Yarn 4.0
Don't let that dissuade you too much. Yes, the community likes shiny, but you're not forced to upgrade if you don't like shiny. Just pin your versions and be happy.
erhaetherth··on Yarn 4.0
> The end result is essentially the same, yes - all directly requested dependencies, and all of their transitive dependencies, are extracted and installed on disk into `./node_modules`.

Well, no. Not if you use Yarn's zero-install or PnP or whatever they call it. It doesn't create node_modules and thus it's not very compatible, and that's the problem everyone is complaining about.

And the lockfiles aren't cross-compatible either.

erhaetherth··on Yarn 4.0
> If someone wants to write a package manager in Rust for speed

How about Zig?

Seriously, try Bun. It's stupid fast. Even if you don't use all its other features, just try "bun install".

erhaetherth··on Yarn 4.0
No, c'mon, that's taking it too far. React, for example, has been doing a wonderful job. They deprecate during one major version, and then maybe they'll remove in the next major version after that. Usually stuff just keeps working. Maybe you have to add an `UNSTABLE_` prefix or something here and there to maintain backwards-compat, but all the breakages have been very minimal and they give you like a year for you to clean up your usages of any deprecated functions so that that your next upgrade is seamless.
erhaetherth··on Cooler screens
Big tech is BS in exactly the way parent poster described but "doing a good job" doesn't usually get you PIP'd AFAICT. Just means you stay the same level for not rushing out half-baked features and very, very slowly people will realize you don't suck but it still won't help you get promo.
erhaetherth··on Base64 Encoding, Explained
Funny. I'm trying to write a base50 encoder now. No good reason, just 'cuz. Can't quite figure out what to do with the half a bit. Gotta carry it forward somehow until I have a full char again but haven't come up with a good scheme.

Probably doesn't need to be perfectly human-like. If you want human-like, play against humans :-) Just keep it as fair as possible with the AIs.

I didn't know they were still doing SC1 AIs, I always wanted to make one but never quite figured out how to get started.
