erfgh··on Sledding athletes are taking their lives
How do you know all that? There is no scientific consensus that exercising over 10 ours per week sacrifices your overall health.
erfgh··on Sledding athletes are taking their lives
How about we let people decide on their won what they want to do with their lives?
erfgh··on The accidentally resilient design of Athens apartments
Athens is an extremely ugly city. It's so ugly that, if you grow up there or live there long enough, the ugliness slowly seeps inside of you and empties your inside, too.

Everything looks as if beauty has no role to play in our lives. The ugliness is not confined to the buildings, people dress in ugly clothes and are poorly groomed and rude.

Working for a Greek employer is hell. People hate working and all the time they talk about how much they hate working. Everyone is eager to start their own business in order to avoid having a Greek boss. This has resulted in a fragmented economy with a huge number of self-employed people that invest nothing.

Litter is everywhere, stray dogs are everywhere, dog shit on the pavement is a certainty.

erfgh··on The largest unknown Bitcoin wallet moved nearly $1B for $0.48 in fees
Insurance on BTC... I wonder how much would that cost... It would dwarf any transfer fees for sure.
erfgh··on The largest unknown Bitcoin wallet moved nearly $1B for $0.48 in fees
You do have to trust yourself to have 100% flawless security because one slip and you lose that $1B to a Chinese hacker with no hope of ever getting it back.
erfgh··on Wirecard – The “German Enron”, and a personal history
You're inferring way too much from a couple of failed investments.
erfgh··on Time to Upgrade Your Monitor
Typing speed is probably not the bottleneck but I found that since I started touch typing I get a lot less headaches because I don't have to look up and down all the time.
erfgh··on For black CEOs in Silicon Valley, humiliation is a part of doing business
> You wouldn't believe how lonely it is. In my team of 150 people, we were two black people.

Why do you find this lonely? Do you not like the company of people unless they are black?

It's not a coverup, they just don't care that much.
erfgh··on Show HN: Virus Cafe – Make a friend in 2 minutes
> I gave my daughter (6) my iPad for ten minutes this morning

There's your problem. Just don't do that. But if you can't avoid it, disconnect the internet before you do it.

erfgh··on Bangalore has 12M residents and only 385 Covid-19 cases
It's because they don't test as much and they are not eager to mark deaths as covid-19.
erfgh··on Why is AI so useless for business?
Because AI is not really AI as was meant in the 60's. The capabilities of computers, algorithms and human researchers were vastly overestimated back then.

But nowadays we find that the AI buzzword sells really well so we decided to lower and lower the bar until almost any algorithm qualifies as AI (also, any machine qualifies as a robot).

erfgh··on Covid-19 Vaccine Candidates
How does mutating eradicate the non-mutated individuals?
erfgh··on Covid-19 Vaccine Candidates
Given the ages and health conditions of the dead, what is the chance that a vaccine will do any good to them? Remember that the flu vaccine is of very dubious effectiveness on those aged 65+.

Of course, vaccinating the whole population might render those groups less likely to be infected (because of herd immunity) but still, it will involve vaccinating populations which have little risk from the disease with a vaccine that has been fast-tracked through the approval process.

This situation is a disaster.

erfgh··on Ennui: How to Overcome Chronic Boredom
Have a child. Problem solved for many years.
erfgh··on The first human trial in Europe of a coronavirus vaccine has begun in Oxford
No, the reason for the lockdowns was to increase the chance that people will find care in the hospitals.

I shudder at the thought of a government locking people up because a treatment might, at some point in the future, be found.

It is of course besides the point but I find it extremely optimistic to expect that a treatment can be found that will significantly reduce deaths when deaths mostly occur in patients of very advanced age or with significant underlying conditions.

erfgh··on The first human trial in Europe of a coronavirus vaccine has begun in Oxford
I'm sure that the Vox article said "from what we know so far", but even if it didn't say that, isn't it obvious? We can only talk from current knowledge.
erfgh··on Coronavirus clue? Most cases aboard U.S. aircraft carrier are symptom-free
How do you know? Those deaths were not necessarily caused by the virus, in fact some of those dead never had a positive covid test.
