erfgh··on Network of Scottish X accounts go dark amid Iran blackout
Russia didn't lose its veto when the USSR collapsed and neither would the UK lose it in such a case. If the UK was in danger of losing its veto it would never allow Scottish independence.
erfgh··on Vietnam bans unskippable ads
So what? People hate lots of companies but still they give them their money.
erfgh··on Show HN: Use Claude Code to Query 600 GB Indexes over Hacker News, ArXiv, etc.
I have to challenge the paper authors' understanding of the Turing test. For an AI system to pass the Turing test its output needs to be indistinguishable from a human's. In other words, the rate of picking the AI system as human should be equal to the rate of picking the human. If in an experiment the AI system is picked at a rate higher than 50% it does not pass the Turing test (as the authors seem to believe) because another human can use this knowledge to conclude that the system being picked is not really human.

Also, I would go one step further and claim that to pass the Turing test an AI system should be indistinguishable from a human when judged by people trained in making such a distinction. I doubt that they used such people in the experiment.

I doubt that any AI system available today, or in the foreseeable future, can pass the test as I qualify it above.

erfgh··on Prepare for That Stupid World
What about wikipedia?
erfgh··on Australia begins enforcing world-first teen social media ban
Supposedly no but they will soon be able to.
erfgh··on Incomplete list of mistakes in the design of CSS
There were better solutions to those problems than the CSS debacle.
erfgh··on Incomplete list of mistakes in the design of CSS
The killer argument at the time (and even now most likely) is that screen readers could not distinguish whether the table was used for layout or for data and therefore sight-impaired users would have trouble.

The argument doesn't make sense because it is not too hard for a screenreader to understand whether a table is used for layout and even if it was hard the problem would more easily be solved by just adding an attribute to the table to indicate that it is used for layout.

erfgh··on The Joy of Playing Grandia, on Sega Saturn
JRPGs are like movies that you can interact with. If you don't enjoy the cutscenes then it will be a drag.

I did play FFVII when it came out and I was extremely impressed and couldn't get enough of it. But I could never get into other JRPGs later.

erfgh··on Brain has five 'eras' with adult mode not starting until early 30s
Parenthood being the most intense happiness possible is not my subjective experience. It is probably the most obvious fact in the world, literally if it wasn't true human societies would be radically different.
erfgh··on Brain has five 'eras' with adult mode not starting until early 30s
Not really; midlife crisis is a misnomer because it can start at 50-60 years old.
erfgh··on Brain has five 'eras' with adult mode not starting until early 30s
Maybe they are unhappy but on the flip side, most people with children will tell you that if you haven't been a parent you don't know what happiness is. The happiness of being a parent is just unimaginable, cannot compare with anything else.
erfgh··on Brain has five 'eras' with adult mode not starting until early 30s
So midlife crisis has not hit yet.
erfgh··on Brain has five 'eras' with adult mode not starting until early 30s
He said that can feel either lesser or above so there's nothing arrogant about that.
erfgh··on Two recently found works of J.S. Bach presented in Leipzig [video]
Pop music also existed back then you know.
erfgh··on LLM Inevitabilism
It's 3 years away.
erfgh··on Fuck Run Club, Join Sit Club
I have a bad ankle/foot that is causing me trouble when I run so I switched to cycling. I never had knee problems when running but I now get knee pain from cycling...
erfgh··on The US stops sharing air quality data from embassies worldwide
> For example, in the US the plumber pays for health care. In Europe he mostly does not.

More like in the US he pays for private health insurance (and/or he is covered by Medicare/Medicaid). In Europe he pays for public health system, something like 5% of his earnings, and he may choose to buy private health insurance on top of that (as many do) because the public health system is in shambles.

erfgh··on Egg prices are soaring. Are backyard chickens the answer?
Insects do not have the same level of sentience as birds and mammals.

However, do keep in mind that a large proportion of agricultural output is used to feed animals.

erfgh··on Egg prices are soaring. Are backyard chickens the answer?
That's factually incorrect. You don't have to kill a plant to get the fruit and/or the seeds it produces.
erfgh··on Egg prices are soaring. Are backyard chickens the answer?
Ease cannot be used to ethically justify an action. But even so, you ignore that, according to research, people who eat meat have worse health than people who don't.
erfgh··on Why birds do not fall while sleeping
Well I can crash my bicycle going downhill and neglecting to use the brakes, this doesn't mean it wasn't intelligently designed.

Design is all about tradeoffs.

erfgh··on Legalizing sports gambling was a mistake
How do you know that they make a consistent profit? You take their word for it? Gamblers are notorious liars and are also known to keep very poor record of their bets.
erfgh··on Legalizing sports gambling was a mistake
> There is also the fantasy of being able to win money but the reality that if you actually win money in a consistent fashion, you will be either kicked-off or your action will be severely crippled.

This does not apply to all bookmakers. Also, betting exchanges exist where the players bet against each other therefore there is no incentive for the operator to ban winning players.

erfgh··on Legalizing sports gambling was a mistake
The figures you state are misleading. Money bet is not money lost. For example, roulette payout is 97.3% and sports betting payout can be as high as 99% or even 100% (done to attract players so that they open an account).
erfgh··on Legalizing Sports Gambling Was a Mistake
I don't believe games of chance are misrepresented as games of skill. But anyway, this article is about sports gambling which most certainly is a game of skill.
erfgh··on 200 people charged in $2.7B health care fraud crackdown
The difference is that private insurers have an actual incentive against this happening but when the scheme is state-funded you have to rely on the people's sense of duty which we know is not particularly strong in many cases.
erfgh··on How Nestlé gets children hooked on sugar in lower-income countries
Without any exaggeration the article claims that Nestle is the most evil entity possible because some of its products contain added sugar.
erfgh··on How Nestlé gets children hooked on sugar in lower-income countries
You can't find a brand because people don't buy it because it tastes awful.
erfgh··on How Nestlé gets children hooked on sugar in lower-income countries
I know I will burn karma for this but what the heck: If you don't like it, don't buy it. That their sugar-added products are not sold in Switzerland or Germany is simply because people there would not buy them enough to make profit. There is nothing unethical about adding sugar to a food.
erfgh··on Artificially sweetened drinks linked to irregular heartbeat
Such sweeteners are everywhere, for example in many sports drinks and sports supplements.
