erex78··on 70 First Co-Founder Dates
Agree with your sentiment here - not every non-technical founder is out to get you with MBA jargon. My co-founder is non-technical, but he's a subject matter expert (he's a physician).

I know several non-technical founders of multi-hundred-million / billion dollar startups. Common thread is that these people are really knowledgeable about a particular industry or subject (ie. sewer inspection, restaurant bulk food ordering, mortgage underwriting). The combo of someone who intimately understands the pain points of an industry partnered with a technical founder is a good one.

erex78··on Ask HN: Advice about aging parents
Having been in a many Assisted Living buildings, I would echo this sentiment. Some homes are run by incredibly caring and thoughtful staff and could be the right home for a loved one. It's not for everybody, but as healthcare needs rise, it's definitely an option to be considered.

PS: check us out at augusthealth.com and reach out if this is a space you want to work in.

August Health | (Senior) Backend Engineer | Distributed team (USA-based) | Full-time

A demographic "perfect storm" is brewing over the next 25 years: (1) the 80+ population will double to more than 30 million people, (2) the family caregiver ratio will almost cut in half (and is further hurt as more children move away from their parents), and (3) as life expectancy rises, people are living for years with complex health issues and disability.

And annual long term care costs are about $400 billion today. Our goal is to make a significant difference in care quality for elders and put a dent in healthcare costs in the country.

I’m a co-founder at August Health. We’re looking for engineers who: 1. Want to work on something that’s good for the world and 2. Care about engineering.

Right now we’re looking to hire an engineer to focus more on our backend APIs and infrastructure. We're using scala for those that like to search for keywords, but we don’t need you to have any experience with it, just ability to learn. You should have a few years experience under your belt. Email me: erez AT augusthealth.com

Prior to this, we cofounded and sold a big-data mapping company, Mapsense, to Apple. Our team of 9 has a strong technical background and also includes a physician with years of experience with geriatric patients. We are well capitalized with financing from tier-1 VCs.

We’re a fully distributed team, deliberate about building our culture, offer competitive comp/benefits, and like to think we’re a fun place to work!

erex78··on The U.S. Census Bureau is undertaking a privacy overhaul. It’s not going well
The US Census Bureau is releasing data using differential privacy for the first time this year - previous approaches to data obfuscation were prove-ably flawed. The State of Alabama is suing the bureau, challenging the use of differential privacy in the 2020 Census.

Uh oh. My post was flagged clearly by someone who didn’t read it or understand it was satire…

——

My favorite part:

NO MORE TALKING ABOUT “MISTAKES”

I DONT MAKE MISTAKES SO I CERTAINLY DO NOT LIKE BEING REMINDED ABOUT THEM. REALLY THERES NO SUCH THING AS A MISTAKE, JUST CREATING OPPORTUNITIES TO LEARN. AND ONCE LEARNED THERES NO POINT IN GOING BACK OVER IT AND THINKING ABOUT WHETHER THE “CORRECT” (WHAT DOES THAT WORD EVEN MEAN?) DECISION WAS MADE AT THE TIME, OR MAKING A CHANGE IN LIGHT OF NEW INFORMATION. LIVE IN THE NOW. AFTER ALL, THE PAST IS JUST A STORY WE TELL OURSELVES! LETS TELL BETTER STORIES.

erex78··on Cooking for Founders
Love the sentiment behind the post - cooking is great life skill to get good at, but I think the "Essential Gear" is definitely far from "essential" (and maybe this will help the new cook from being too scared of the list).

Here's my version of the "minimum viable set": 1. big, sharp knife 2. cutting board 3. wooden spoon 4. pan.

IMO, the particularly dispensable: "instant read digital cooking thermometer", "micro-plane zester", "fish turner spatula", "large heat-safe glass measuring cup", "honing rod".

Again, still love the intention. Nice post!

ABOUT THE ROLE:

We're looking for an experienced front-end developer to join us, especially someone with several years of experience building and shipping complex applications. We're looking for a founding front-end developer to join us, especially someone with several years of experience building and shipping complex applications. Our team has a pretty technical background and we like to balance building thoughtfully with getting things shipped.

We are also on the lookout for somebody who can turn high fidelity mockups into (non-functional) html+css components that other developers can run with. This person should be excited getting into the weeds of tiny design details and the know-how to use well-formed css to make them real.

erex78··on Map Labeling Algorithms with Application in Graph Drawing and Cartography (2008) [pdf]
Here's another take for actually placing labels on the map (and not out at the boundary): https://patents.google.com/patent/US10102669B2/. (Disclosure, I'm one of the authors of this approach.)

The patent is kind of hard to read, but the basic idea is to choose a number of labels in a region (ie. a map-tile) by the relative density of labels in that region to surrounding ones and then sample them according to some ranking. This preserves relative density so that more populated areas visually have more labels. This works for data too, not just map labels.

erex78··on Ask HN: Sell my startup for $14M because I can't raise $2M?
There is a lot of advice on the thread saying: take the money. Given your personal situation etc. this may very well be the right choice.

But you need to realize that just because you've been approached for acquisition and even if somebody tells you straight up "we want to acquire you", it sounds like you are far away from actually getting acquired. The road from casual interest to money in the bank is long and bumpy.

Unless you actually have a term-sheet in your inbox, you aren't in the position to make this decision right now.

The right tactical approach is for you to push hard on both fronts - push as hard as possible on fundraising as if you have no other option. And if you do want to consider an acquisition, start approach these companies and ask for term sheet.

If both go well, then you have a decision to make.. (and more leverage..)

erex78··on Ask HN: Ever been hired through a “who's hiring” post?
I've hired somebody directly from a who's hiring post.

The developer was remote - we did a couple of phone screens and sent a contract over within a week or two. I still work with him and he's one of the best engineers I know.

erex78··on Show HN: Use Meetup.com Data to Find Your Ideal City
You could have a toggle where you divide by the overall population of each city. So basically let the user switch between percentage and absolute.

Another ranking to consider is the h-index metric for academic papers (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H-index), where you use the number of members of each meetup group in place of citations. So a city with a score h has h meetups each of which has at least h members.
