erellsworth··on Why Scientists Are Calling for the Moon to Be Better Protected from Development
Serious question: What is the difference between telling people what they can and can't do on the moon vs telling people what they can and can't do on vacant land here on earth? If I go out to some remote area in the United States and start building houses, I'll almost certainly get into legal trouble, especially if I don't have any permits and definitely if I don't own the land.

Who gets to own the moon? Is it just whoever has the resources to travel there and build stuff? Imagine if Space X decides to carve a portrait of Elon Musk into the face of the moon at a scale large enough it can be seen from the naked eye on earth. Would that be OK just because he had the money to do it?

erellsworth··on Are We Living in the Roaring 20s?
Birth rates in the US have been below replacement levels for some time now. This means we will need more immigrants to sustain the never ending growth capitalism demands.
erellsworth··on Launch HN: Soundry AI (YC W24) – Music sample generator for music creators
You have to create an account before you can even see what the pricing is. Sorry, but no. I'm not letting you harvest my email address just to see how much your service costs.
erellsworth··on Launch HN: Soundry AI (YC W24) – Music sample generator for music creators
Ah, so you have to let them harvest your email address just to see what the price is. Lame. Thanks for the info.
erellsworth··on Launch HN: Soundry AI (YC W24) – Music sample generator for music creators
Where did you even find the price? I couldn't find pricing info anywhere on the site.
erellsworth··on Dune: Part Two Is the Best Sci-Fi Film of the Decade
For me, there's a lot more going on in this film in the subtext. It's a story about people struggling to find meaning and beauty in an absurd and often cruel world where everything is kinda going to shit.

I also love a good martial arts movie, and Michelle Yeoh is awesome. The fight scenes are fantastic and hilarious. And finally, the film manages a big-budget feel while it cost somewhere between 14 and 25 million to make, which is nothing compared to the average blockbuster. Avengers Endgame, for example, cost over 300 million. I have a lot of appreciation for that sort of thing.

erellsworth··on Dune: Part Two Is the Best Sci-Fi Film of the Decade
I'd put Everything Everywhere All at Once on that list, depending how you define sci-fi. One of the best films of the decade, in my opinion.
erellsworth··on Billionaire-Fueled Lobbying Group Behind the State Bills to Ban UBI Experiments
Only way a 3 (or more) party system works in the US is if we change the way we vote to a ranked-choice type of system with runoff elections. With first past the post, winner take all elections, multiple parties just makes it possible for politicians to win with smaller and smaller pluralities.
erellsworth··on Meta will start collecting "anonymized" data about Quest headset usage
I'm shocked by this. Shocked I tell you.
erellsworth··on Ask HN: Nitter officially declared "over" today – alternatives?
It's funny how an answer can be totally unhelpful while still being correct.
erellsworth··on Billions stolen in wage theft from US workers
The government is run entirely by capitalists, so good luck with that.
erellsworth··on Why software engineers like woodworking (2021)
A lot of woodworkers build their projects in something like Sketchup before they even make the first cut, so you can basically see what the end product will look like without wasting any material.

I think woodworking is similar to programming because they both involve similar problem solving skills. You have to figure out how to build a thing to serve a use case using the tools and resources you have available.

erellsworth··on Show HN: A simple ChatGPT prompt builder
That's great but I'll just ask ChatGPT to write my prompts.
erellsworth··on Florida House of Representatives approves bill to ban social media for kids < 16
I think the difference would be in enforcement and what that would imply. How do you verify someone's age online without exposing that person to unwarranted tracking? Do we want to just say social media anonymity is dead?
erellsworth··on FTC bans TurboTax from advertising 'free' services, calls deceptive advertising
Picked an appropriate username tho
erellsworth··on Cable firms to FTC: We shouldn't have to let users cancel service with a click
I had to cancel Cox Internet a few years ago because I was moving to a different state. When I called to cancel they asked why and I declined to say. Why should I provide them with another data point for their executives to see in a report? It's enough that I want to cancel the service. They don't need to know anything else.

Yet they just kept asking, refusing to take "no answer" as my answer. I had to get almost belligerent before they finally agreed to cancel the service. Was it petty on my part? Yes. Were they entitled to a reason? Fuck no.

Internet service should be a public utility at this point, or at least ISPs should be much more heavily regulated.

erellsworth··on I'm sorry but I cannot fulfill this request it goes against OpenAI use policy
Oh man, it only comes in brown?
erellsworth··on The Internet Is Full of AI Dogshit
I'm old enough to remember when the Internet was full of organic dog shit.
erellsworth··on Why Aren't We Sieve-Ing?
Personally, I haven't been using SIEVE because I didn't know what it was. However, after reading this article I still don't know what it is.
erellsworth··on Ask HN: What 1980s/90s-era shareware did you purchase?
Castle of the Winds
erellsworth··on How do we stop Meta in 2024? We fix the information loop
> Twitter faltered but recovered and competitors don't have an opening any more.F

Hate to break it to you but Twitter hasn't recovered. It's still a financial dumpster fire and the dumpster is rolling down a steep hill toward bankruptcy.

erellsworth··on Disney, Warner, Comcast, and Paramount are contemplating cuts, possible mergers
You absolutely can wring something out by making too much of it. There's a reason "superhero fatigue" is a thing.
erellsworth··on Disney, Warner, Comcast, and Paramount are contemplating cuts, possible mergers
WTF does religion have to do with this? I have no idea what you're trying to say.
erellsworth··on Disney, Warner, Comcast, and Paramount are contemplating cuts, possible mergers
> Wringing the life is a pretty mean way to put it. They tried to use the IP to make money.

Mean or not, I'd say it's also accurate. They tried to use the IP to make money... by wringing the life out of it. There are so many Marvel/Star Wars movies/tv shows now you need a freaking spreadsheet to keep track.

erellsworth··on The Psychology of Poverty: Where Do We Stand? [pdf]
This reminds me of the Monty Python Four Yorkshiremen sketch, with 4 rich dudes bragging about who had the poorest childhood[1].

One could just as easily compare your poverty with that of people in the poorest places in the world.

Oh, your kids get to go to school? Our kids spend their days digging through rubbish heaps. Oh your kid was taken away by CPS? Our kid died from inhaling toxic fumes from melting down the old computer parts they found digging through the rubbish heaps. Oh, you have a debit card fee? We're don't even have ATMs, or banks.

Poverty is a spectrum. Just because X is poorer than Y doesn't mean Y isn't also poor.

erellsworth··on Zuckerberg hunkers down in Hawaii to wait out apocalypse
Hawaii seems like a poor choice of places to try to escape the ravages of climate change.
erellsworth··on Baldur's Gate 3 Wins Game of the Year at the Game Awards
Except it's not a tabletop game, it's a video game. For me, turn-based combat makes a video game less immersive.
erellsworth··on Baldur's Gate 3 Wins Game of the Year at the Game Awards
According to the game's executive producer, it's a AAA game.

erellsworth··on Transparent wood could soon find uses in smartphone screens, insulated windows
That's easy. 6 inches. We have stuff that thick in stock.
erellsworth··on A genetically modified bacterium that outcompetes bacteria causing tooth decay
I worked for a place that recruited people to test stuff like toothpaste, mouthwash, and other personal care products way back in mid 00s. We worked with a lot of big-name companies, and one of them was trying to get approval for a very similar product. The criteria were very similar to what's described here, where the person had to be perfectly healthy and also wear dentures. I think it took us about a year to recruit like 3 people before they just gave up and dropped the whole thing.
