eqvinox··on Postgres with QUIC
Personal red flag/antishibboleth: calling it "QUIC (UDP)" is like saying you drive a "car (wheel)".

(Also, overwhelming smell of slop.)

eqvinox··on NASA asked several former SR-71A staffers to help secret restart
About two thirds through the article, I'm getting an utter sense of dread:

I seriously hope they didn't dump all available information into an LLM and are now hoping/assuming they can use that to reengineer & rebuild the necessary physical tools to get it flying again.

eqvinox··on The state of SIMD in Rust in 2026
> some optional extensions that are situationally impactful, including the Crypto extension and some of the newer accumulation / dot product instructions.

Or LSE, adding a whole different set of atomic ops... which are way faster on some CPUs...

eqvinox··on EV Sales Are Booming in Europe with Gasoline at $10 a Gallon
> The Germans hate electric cars for some weird reason.

German car executives hate electric cars for some weird reason.

Actual Germans don't care and buy them like everybody else, depending on fit, availability and price.

eqvinox··on Golang: Crypto/fips140: do not bloat crypto code unnecessarily
From having had my own prior interactions with you, I am entirely unsurprised that you're getting some cold shoulder due to other people's experiences with you.

As far as I can tell you're great at cryptography code. You've gotten better at the social parts of collaborative software engineering, but there's still room to grow.

> manual transmission

I thought this was a German (D/A/CH) fetish, is it all of Europe?

eqvinox··on EV Sales Are Booming in Europe with Gasoline at $10 a Gallon
Yeah, the US is harder on EVs. In Europe, finding a place 160km from the next gas station is going to be essentially impossible. Maybe in the part of Russia that is technically Europe, or far north Finland/Norway/Scotland, but even that's doubtful. (Those places do have recommendations for survival gear if you get stuck in winter. But look at EVs in Norway...)

> the American auto industry

Have you seen the state of the German auto industry? You can point and laugh.

And they have been warned about this, in 2019, by vice chancellor Robert Habeck (Greens). Too bad nobody cared to listen.

eqvinox··on Ask HN: Who's still keeping a DOS machine up because the business depends on it?
> about 100 are from pre-WW1

You're underselling it. The ex oldest operating signal box in Hörlkofen was finally removed from service less than a year ago, 2025-12-12.

It entered service in 1899.

eqvinox··on VSCode's SSH Agent Is Bananas (2025)
I don't even hit 256 on my desktop with a shitton of things open and 75 firefox sandbox processes, much less on a remote server. What in heaven's name are you doing to cross 256?

(Also this isn't a default limit.)

eqvinox··on Type Punning in C and C++
> C code which might be compiled by a C++ compiler.

I really hope you're talking mostly about header files; for actual code this is such a horrible idea (and in a lot of cases just won't work without massive efforts.) Even for header files, arguably one ought to really know what they're doing.

eqvinox··on Type Punning in C and C++
The example included below "Why C and C++ Differ" is UB in both C and C++ (and says nothing about "why" C & C++ differ). The article isn't overall wrong but that bit is just...

(Feels a bit like LLM junk, but honestly not sure.)

Amazing. But it won't work for long, they'll patch the BT beacons with some "privacy" mode :(

Eh. Just wait until Oracle goes bankrupt due to their AI misinvestments & see where ZFS rights end up.

eqvinox··on Raspberry Pi 5 EEPROM update now blocks manual RAM upgrades

It's already a signed binary, with rollback protection. (According to Reddit comments; I stopped using Raspis a long time ago)

eqvinox··on Overdue library magazine returned after 132 years
Fun story, but libraries occasionally get rid of things without removing all their labels. It's very possible it was discarded by the library rather than lent & overdue.
eqvinox··on Comparison of Malloc() Algorithms
The tables look mostly correct, and that's what I'll be bookmarking this for… I don't think I've seen any elsewhere that are this extensive (in both axis, total allocators covered & details per allocator).
eqvinox··on Comparison of Malloc() Algorithms
It seems to be intentional & if somebody wants to make a statement about TLS with their personal website that's their choice to make and execute.
eqvinox··on A 32-year-old bug walks into a Telnet server
I stopped reading on that line. The entire text is coming off as insulting, entitled and smug.
eqvinox··on SystemIO conflicts are not firmware bugs
> the internet will tell you that PC firmware developers are incompetent³

> ³ I’m not going to present an opinion on that here, merely say that this provides no supporting evidence for that assertion

If anything, isn't this evidence the vendor should've paid someone to write an ACPI driver for Linux? :-)

eqvinox··on Countries 15x10 Pixel Flags
Failure on the Swiss flag:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Switzerland

The Swiss flag is square, instead of the rectangular shape typical for national flags.

Even if it were to be the civil & state ensign, the cross must remain "quadratic" with the horizontal and vertical arms the same width. They clearly aren't, and it looks horrible.

eqvinox··on The NX bit is not just about security
Honestly feels like a misdesign in ARM. Where does it ever make sense for Device memory to not be data prefetchable, but allow instruction prefetch? It should IMHO disable all prefetch…
eqvinox··on The NX bit is not just about security
Are you unaware that you can write code to RW memory, remap it to RX and then run it? That's how all JIT works these days.

(Or did you confuse cache flushing with TLB flushing? The remap does the latter, not the former.)

eqvinox··on Please don't rearrange our shoes when we turn up, paramedics in Japan urge
Everyone except the driver has ample time to swap boots during the drive to the location. (In cases where not, I'd also default to robust safety boots.)

Depending on the boots, you might not want to wear them while "idle"¹ in any case, though that's mostly a non-concern with modern safety shoes.

¹ mandatory note: most emergency responders have tons of work while "idle", I just mean "not actively responding"

eqvinox··on Please don't rearrange our shoes when we turn up, paramedics in Japan urge
Does the American South actually have that kind of group cohesion?
eqvinox··on Please don't rearrange our shoes when we turn up, paramedics in Japan urge
Sorry, I phrased that poorly. The muscular support is its own thing (and I agree with you) but your soles don't deal well with hot summer asphalt surfaces, glass shards or even small pebbles surfaces.
eqvinox··on Please don't rearrange our shoes when we turn up, paramedics in Japan urge
Probably the same in most Western countries. It's self reinforcing though; if you were expecting to take them off you'd never pick those shoes by default, rather leave them in the back of the car (which presumably/hopefully is what they do in Japan, in case they *do* need them? idk…)
eqvinox··on Please don't rearrange our shoes when we turn up, paramedics in Japan urge
> That's the whole function of shoes though.

Nah, the main function of shoes is (to support your feet and) prevent injury. Cleanliness is second on the list.
