epx··on The Lack of Compensation in Open Source Software Is Unsustainable
I have published a project to interact with house alarm systems manufactured by a local company [1]. It is a hobby project, I have it for my own use, don't expect it becomes a money printing machine.

Yet, since many users request features well outside my use cases, and I have only one sample of the many alarm models that use the same protocol, I thought I'd be successful in getting some help from the manufacturer, from lent hardware (at pessimist side) to some small monetary contribution (optimist side). I got no response at all...

People are also fast to point things that are "wrong" but don't want to submit a PR at all.

epx··on Almost no one pays a 6% real-estate commission except Americans
In Brazil it is 6%, some agents used to charge even 8% or 10% but the trend is towards 5% (since real estate became expensive here as well in the last 12 years).
epx··on Is AI the next crypto? Insights from HN comments
I had more luck with YOLOv8. But I still keep the motion-detected archive (generated by DVR-Scan) for some months, and the raw footage for a couple weeks as well.

+1. I have security cameras at home, and my "DVR" is a collection of shell scripts plus a Python script that uses YOLO to find the interesting parts of the footage. The thing works, helps a lot to review daily footage, was damn easy to put to work, and didn't cost me a cent (not even hardware; I run it in a Mini-PC w/o GPU). I knew nothing about ML before writing this script. So yeah, the value is there.

Have used for a similar purpose as well (make sure a code path breaks).

epx··on Using Goatse to Stop App Theft
Using goatse to punish hotlinkers is a classic.
epx··on Raspberry Pi 5
I want a dirt-cheap Zero (if possible one that does not need an SD card), not something that tries unsuccesfully displace a NUC :(
epx··on Why don’t Americans eat mutton?
Preparation is probably a big factor. Some meat houses ('churrascarias') serve grilled mutton here but I can't stand the taste, it immediately remembers me of a smelly rain-soaked lamb. But I ate mutton in a dinner in England, decided to eat it quietly out of politeness to the host, but it didn't taste bad at all.

+1. Software companies should accept that there is a ceiling to their revenue, and this ceiling won't need that many engineers to maintain the software. But many actors are benefied by believing in infinite growth. It is a collective illusion.
epx··on Ham radio enthusiasts vs. High-frequency traders: A battle for the airwaves
One day the market itself will reach this conclusion, that one auction-trade a day is all it's needed.
epx··on FreeBSD spends 7% of its boot time running a bubblesort on its SYSINITs
Had this problem in xBase (Clipper with NTX indexes): sorting by date but there were many null (empty) dates in that particular column. Added another date column (that was never null) to the index just to provide entropy.

epx··on Unpopular Opinion: Don’t Use a Raspberry Pi for That
This is a letdown of the current state of technology - guess most of us expected to be able to run a (regular distro) Linux on $2 chips that could even embed a "real time processor" to do the bitbanging. The opposite happen: a Raspy Zero price rivals the NUC.
epx··on Unpopular Opinion: Don’t Use a Raspberry Pi for That
You can always use an AVR or ESP32 as your remote GPIO.
epx··on Rust on Espressif chips – 2023 Roadmap
Same situation here - very excited particularly about no_std but it would be a big time investment on a framework/language I probably won't use professionaly. Still wanted to move away from Arduino/C++, found the sweet spot on MicroPython.
epx··on EsPiFF: An ESP32 in the Raspberry Pi form factor
It is quite expensive (US$ 50-ish). In 2023 we should have plenty of $2-5 chips capable of running a normal distro of Linux.
epx··on EsPiFF: An ESP32 in the Raspberry Pi form factor
Wish there was an ESP64 with just enough RAM to run a Debian distro, even slowly, so we could stop waiting for Zeros to get cheaper.
epx··on Tell HN: IPv6-only still pretty much unusable
He.net needs a fixed non-CGNAT IPv4 address, with protocol 41 open, and this is quite difficult to get.
epx··on Tell HN: IPv6-only still pretty much unusable
Same situation, I use IPv6 NAT and VPN, huge letdown but c'est la vie.

epx··on Rust on Espressif chips – 17-10-2022
These guys are talking business. Some weeks ago I vented in Twitter about problems building an example project for ESP32 (in Portuguese), someone from Espressif side was diligent enough to translate it and answer with hints (in the end, I had messed up during toolchain installation, thanks there is espup now).
epx··on What “diversity and inclusion” means at Microsoft
It is easy to feel like we have a target painted on our backs with this diversity thing. It is a sentimeng generated by our reptilian brain. (It does not help that some hotheads at LinkedIn say that every black hole in the universe is blame of the white man.)

But this is a feeling that must be let go. Privilege allows people to reach excellence and excellence is scarce, so no, privileged people that do their homework won't suffer because we are trying to do the right thing, allowed by our current stage of civilization that generates so much surplus.

Not picking up the capable people and letting them reach their level of excellence is a big problem in our society, and everybody would be better off if this was fixed.

+1 here.
